Abstract

The main streets and the city entrances of Surabaya support its economic activity as well as become a potential to generate first impression or image of the city for its users. In line with the city governments program, the existence of the green line in the corridor of the main streets should be remarked to develop green space. Consequently,  visual objects on the green line, such as vegetation, need to meet the rules of the visual aesthetic arrangement based on the characteristics of the corridor  and visual capabilities of observers. Jalan Mastrip is  one of the main streets, which is crucial for the city economy and also becomes a city entrance of Surabaya. It has  potential to give a positive ‘first impression‘ for its users. However, the street condition is still beyond  expectation as a city entrance. Therefore, the aim of this study is to formulate the concept of arrangement of green line  in accordance with the characteristics of corridor space and visual capabilities of observers. Descriptive-qualitative method is used supported by the perception of observers / respondents. Then the observations and evaluation results were analyzed to get the arrangement concept of green line of Mastrip corridor, accordance with its characteristics as Surabaya entrance corridor with industry, trade and services concept.

Abstract

Abstract

Nowadays, the traditional market‘s existence is decreasing. Traditional markets are decreasing because of the old-school either design or system. Those, traditional market should adapt over time, beside that interaction becomes a foundation for daily activities and market activities. This interaction links with the social value, which link to equality understandings. Equality's definition relates to activities and interactions in the traditional market.. Indonesian traditional market, in Solo, be an example of diversity in social interaction. Diversity in social interaction links to the architectural approach. Inclusive design in architecture is a form that effectively approaches diversity in social interaction. A Bottom-up method in architecture programming is an appropriate approach that can be used to specify every step used in architecture that can be linked with social equality with interactions as the focus. This article analyzes inclusive design principles and precedents, then can be used as a reference to design somewhere that can be functioned inclusively.

Abstract

Down syndrome is a trisomy genetic disorder resulting in cognitive delays in the fetus. Cognitive impairment in Down syndrome affects short-term memory and motor impairment due to the characteristic hypotonia of the muscles. People with Down syndrome tend to be visual learners. Through visuals, they are easier to remember and repeat. Visual memory in Down syndrome is better than auditory memory in receiving information. Therefore, the visual environment aspect is presented as a facility in architectural element designs to improve cognition, memory, and motor skills in the wayfinding orientation stimulus. Aspects of the visual environment are offered to stimulate the sensory vision repeatedly. Sensory architecture has a role in activating the body in receiving information, exploring the world, providing taste, and forming social relationships. This paper aims to discuss the design of the visual environment in stimulating the sensory vision of people with Down syndrome to facilitate wayfinding orientation. Visual environment design through colours, patterns, materials, and light are presented as tools to activate visual understanding in responding to and remembering wayfinding orientations. Aspects of the visual environment are communication and encouraging physical activity for users.

Abstract

Limited land area and increasing population have made housing prices in big cities expensive, so the provision of subsidized housing has also expanded. The problem that often occurs in subsidized housing is the design of housing that does not take into account the needs of the occupants. Subsidized houses that are not in accordance with the wishes can affect the occupants' perception of comfort towards the available subsidized houses. This study aims to determine the perceptions of residents in Makassar City on the available subsidized housing depending on the desired needs. The research method used is quantitative using a questionnaire to determine the comfort perception of the architectural elements of subsidized houses by questioning several aspects that can be seen from the characteristics of the occupants and then analyzed using a Likert scale with cross tabulation (SPSS) which is associated with the characteristics of the occupants. The results of research are cross-tabulated occupant perceptions and associated with occupant characteristics indicating that the perceptions and occupant profiles in Makassar City on average feel comfortable with the space available for their activities. But there are also those who are uncomfortable so that they may need to add or expand space and change the function of space to support their daily needs.

Abstract

Misinterpreting the relationship between economic and environmental aspects of urban development can lead to excessive physical expansion at the expense of quality urban spaces, including green areas. In Surabaya, despite its active infrastructure development, there has been a reduction in green open spaces and the emergence of 'leftover' spaces requiring extensive redesign efforts. One notable example of lost space in Surabaya is Bundaran Waru, strategically positioned as a prominent entrance point and serving as a critical node for primary arterial road intersections. Bundaran Waru presents a unique opportunity to enhance Surabaya's positive image. This study aims to explore innovative ideas for harnessing the potential of Bundaran Waru's lost space, contributing to the city across multiple dimensions, including aesthetics, social dynamics, economics, and ecology, among others. The research begins with a literature review to identify suitable typologies for open spaces based on the primary function of arterial roads. The second phase involves direct observations to collect physical data, assess potential, and identify challenges. Subsequently, a descriptive qualitative analysis of the collected data is conducted to formulate design criteria rooted in the principles of public space design. The research findings underscore the strong potential of this space as a passive green open area capable of encapsulating the essence and identity of Surabaya.

Abstract

A precedent is a piece of design knowledge that acts as an input to the design process. On the other hand, the originality of architectural design is built from many interpretations that occur within the designers, including the performance in the precedent study. However, more information still needs to be provided about how students seek, read, and apply precedents during the naturally occurring design process. Architecture students have limitations in developing a design, considering they need more experience and knowledge than practitioners. This research is based on the learning-by-doing experienced by architecture students when designing a housing project. The research is conducted with the participant of second-year architecture students, which includes observation during the studio class and interview. The portfolio documents are also used to support the data itself. The result shows that architectural precedents are sought almost in every phase of the design process. The precedent that has already been seen or even analyzed becomes part of the designer’s tacit knowledge.

Abstract

In the digital era, architectural designs can be quickly visualized. However, the material abstraction from digital visualization tools may reduce immersion and make it hard to recognize design intention. This paper discusses how architectural students acknowledge the design representation despite various ways of visualization. Material is key to visualizing architecture by adding realism, depth, and texture. People create mental concepts of material beyond words. Thus, design representations can have positive or negative impacts depending on how effectively the idea is delivered to the audience. This study uses a quantitative method to investigate the extent to which the preference technique of students represents the design’s idea. The study's main objective is to identify the criteria for representation that effectively convey the designer's intentions while minimizing visual deception. The analyzed data is classified into three archetypes consisting of (1) the student’s previous knowledge about representation, (2) the intention of design representation, and (3) mass and material in representation. The result shows no strict correlation between previous knowledge and the preferred idea representation technique. Yet, the result indicates a correlation between previous knowledge and techniques used to represent material. The photorealism technique is preferable in representing the clarity of material in representation. Photorealism has advantages in showing the quality of shade in the material. On the other hand, respondents tend to choose to use sketches to show information about scale and mass. The research comprehensively explains this phenomenon in the context of positive theory, particularly in design communication and representation.

Abstract

Working from home (WFH) is becoming increasingly common. Technological developments and the COVID-19 pandemic have catalyzed the development of the concept of working from home. This has caused a shift in the meaning of housing from something separate from work to something that must accommodate work activities. A proper place to work in housing then becomes a necessity that cannot always be fulfilled. This research explores how housing accommodates work activities. The study is conducted on how participants negotiate space by using and changing the attributes of the dwelling to create an ideal work setting. Interviews and auto-photography were conducted with young professionals aged 20 to 25 who have experience working from home with varying frequency. The results show that work activities take place in a variety of residential settings. Participants chose their work setting based on the type of work activities performed as well as personal preferences. Some interconnected factors that influence the work setting in the residence are the type of work activity, privacy, attributes, and atmosphere. Participants also intervene in the dwelling by using existing spaces and attributes to form ideal working conditions that meet their needs.
