Abstract

Technology plays a significant role in English Language Teaching during the pandemic. There are several platforms that both teachers and students need to adapt to. Google seems to have a major role in developing platforms for both teachers and students. However, among those platforms, this study focuses on the use of E-Module arranged using the Google Sites platform as supplementary material in General English classes. Google Sites was chosen as it is a web-based module that teachers can personalize to fulfill students’ needs. Since this study aims to evaluate the use of E-Module arranged using the Google Sites platform as supplementary material in General English classes at Tribhuwana Tunggadewi University, this study employed descriptive quantitative method using survey to gather the data. The population of the study was all students who enroll in General English during the academic year 2021/2022. From the population, 328 students participated in the survey. The survey questions covered learning efficiency, experience, and motivation from students’ points of view. The study findings indicated that more than half of respondents agreed that the module was very good to use without revision, which means the module was efficient, fun, and motivating. Yet, the average of 25% of each question demands minor improvement for the module as well as providing the printed version. Therefore, teachers and lecturers may use Google Sites as supplementary material. For further study, as the pandemic becomes endemic, researchers might conduct an evaluation of e-module both in online and offline classes. Keywords: E-nglish Module, Google Sites, Students’ Perspective

This study employed a descriptive quantitative method involving 27 RPL program students majoring in Pharmacy. Data obtained from the Academic Motivation Scale and students’ TOEIC scores were analyzed quantitatively using simple linear regression technique with the help of SPSS 22.0. This study found that even though the data were normal and linear, academic motivation had no effect on the students’ English proficiency test scores. This might happen because there are way more complex factors that influence academic achievement or academic performance in the results of English proficiency test.

Abstract

Abstract

Mastering speaking for dentistry students is essential both for academic and professional purposes. While technology is widely integrated into the English learning process, limited study exists on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), in this case SmallTalk2Me, in English as a Foreign Language classroom. Thus, this study aims to elaborate on the use of AI to enhance dentistry students' speaking skills and to investigate its benefits on students' mastery of speaking English. Using the descriptive qualitative method, this study seeks a deeper understanding of students' speaking skills reflected in their interaction with the AI. 78 dentistry students were asked to do the speaking level test on SmallTalk2Me. The findings indicated that the majority of the students were in the intermediate level (30 students), followed by an upper intermediate level (27 students). In terms of speaking elements, the students demonstrated advanced proficiency in fluency (37 students) and grammar use (32 students). However, there is a need for improvement in terms of students' pronunciation (29 students) and vocabulary mastery (28 students), indicated by their intermediate level performance. The detailed as well as instant feedback provided by the AI highlights the AI's role in assisting the students in improving their speaking proficiency level. Additionally, it helps teachers in developing suitable lesson plans aligned with the student's proficiency level. In summary, this study emphasizes the benefits of integrating AI into the English and learning process, particularly for enhancing speaking skills among dentistry students.

Abstract

For hospital administration, clear and accurate communication is essential, especially when ordering hospital supplies. Pronunciation errors committed by hospital administration students can cause misunderstandings that have far-reaching harmful effects. By examining students’ pronunciation errors, the qualitative study was presented in this study. Data were collected from video conversations in ordering medical supplies in hospital settings, analyzed for errors, and written in the phonetic transcription. According to the findings, respondents made errors in substitution (87%), omission (10%), and insertion (3%). Meanwhile, 47% of the errors were caused by discrepancies in the sound systems between L1 and L2, 37% by mother tongue interference, and 16% by inconsistent vowel usage. This study should be helpful to the hospital administration students to make them aware of the significance of proper pronunciation.

Abstract

This study investigates higher education students’ perceptions and experiences with the British Council EnglishScore (BCES) test as part of their graduation requirements. To achieve this objective, a descriptive quantitative approach was employed, incorporating case study analysis. Data were collected through an online questionnaire, interviews, and observations. The questionnaire data were analyzed quantitatively using SPSS for simple percentage analysis. The findings revealed that 84.6% of participants had no prior experience learning English outside the classroom, and 68.1% had not taken any English proficiency test. However, 47.3% of students strongly agreed with using BCES as a graduation requirement. Regarding BCES as an e-application for assessing English proficiency, 40.7% of participants felt comfortable using it, and 44% strongly agreed that the language used in the test reflects real-life usage. Additionally, 46.2% of participants felt ready to take the test, 39.6% felt challenged, and 45.1% felt focused. Furthermore, 39.6% strongly agreed that BCES motivated them to read more English material.Future studies could explore the impact of BCES on students' language proficiency and overall academic performance.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the extent to which students’ English proficiency levels improve over the course of the program as measured by the British Council EnglishScore (BCES), and to evaluate the effect size of the observed change in test scores. The study employed a pre-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design. English proficiency score was assessed through pre- and post-tests using the BCES platform. The pretest and posttest scores were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. A paired samples t-test was conducted to determine statistical significance, and Cohen's d was calculated to assess the effect size of the intervention. The findings demonstrate a statistically significant improvement in students’ EnglishScore performance following the intervention. However, the effect size indicates that the gain was modest. While students showed progress on average, the improvement was not dramatic, suggesting that the impact of the short-term intervention was limited. These results highlight the importance of sustained instructional design and the need for realistic expectations when implementing short-term English language programs. Future research should consider longer-term interventions, incorporate control groups for comparison, and include qualitative data to better understand learners' experiences and engagement with digital proficiency assessments.
