Abstract

Abstract

The position of Bengkulu Province, which is flanked by the subduction zone between the Euro-Asian and Indian-Australian plates to the west, and the Sumatra Fault zone to the east, makes Bengkulu City one of the areas prone to earthquake disasters. Muara Bangkahulu District is one of the sub-districts in Bengkulu City. Muara Bangkahulu sub-district is an area that functions as a government centre, trade and service centre, and one of the education centres in Bengkulu City. This study aims to determine the ground response in the Muara Bangkahulu sub-district area during an earthquake. The wave propagation method used in this study is a one-dimensional equivalent of linear and nonlinear modelling that propagates earthquake waves from bedrock to surface. The results of this study are Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA), amplification factor, earthquake acceleration time history, and acceleration spectra response. The results of this analysis will be compared between equivalent linear and nonlinear values. The results of this study can also help us realise and further consider the value of seismic design in the Muara Bangkahulu sub-district area, mainly if a stronger earthquake occurs in the future.

Abstract

Bengkulu is an area with the potential risk of the Mentawai Pagai Megathrust subduction earthquake; it is necessary to evaluate the bearing capacity and foundation settlement of the building. This study aims to analyse the influence of variations in dimensions and cross-sectional shapes on the bearing capacity and foundation settlement of the Scada building using the Poulos and Davis method, the Reese and Wright method, the Luciano Decourt method, and the finite element method. Based on the results of the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), the influence of variations in shape, namely square and circular, with dimensions of 300 mm, 400 mm, and 500 mm, as well as depths of 7m, 9m, 11m, and 13m, affects the bearing capacity and foundation settlement. The analysis was conducted by comparing the bearing capacity and settlement of pile foundations in the Scada building using various methods. The analysis results show that the bearing capacity, deflection magnitude, and smallest settlement are below the permitted settlement limit, i.e., less than 10% of the foundation dimensions. The comparison between static and numerical methods, or the Bearing Capacity Ratio (BCR) approaching 1, is more efficient and safer to use. In this analysis, the BCR value closest to 1 was obtained for a 500 mm foundation using the Reese and Wright method at a depth of 9 m, yielding a bearing capacity of 312.04 tonnes for a single pile and 207.69 tonnes for a pile group.

Abstract

Rigid pavement is a commonly used pavement in soft subgrade conditions because it can anticipate soil subsidence in the transverse and longitudinal directions of the roadway as a result of uneven load distribution due to inhomogeneous soil. Road pavement that is passed by excessive loads will cause the road to experience soil subsidence which will also affect the soil layer below so that research on the problem is needed. This research uses the finite element method which aims to determine the vertical settlement of soil (Uy), the maximum settlement of 3650 days, and the safety factor (Msf) that occurs in soft soil layers against rigid pavement on Srijaya Raya road, Palembang City. The soil characteristics on Srijaya Raya Road are dominated by clay soil with low to medium plasticity which is dominantly soft so that it can cause significant road damage if maintenance is not carried out. Based on the research, it was found that the maximum subsidence value of the distributed load was at STA 0 + 806 at point BH-02 located at the Air Waru Bridge towards Indralaya, which was -0.04847 m with a safety factor of 1.650 and the maximum subsidence for 3650 days was at STA 2 + 103 at point BH-04 located at the Air Kenanga Bridge towards Palembang of -0.539 m.Keywords: finite element method; rigid pavement; safety factor; settlement.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Predicting the ultimate bearing capacity (qult) of strip footings on slopes remains a major challenge in geotechnical engineering, as classical methods were developed for level ground and lose reliability for complex slope-foundation geometries. Although finite element analysis (FEA) provides better accuracy, its high computational cost limits large-scale parametric studies. This study proposes a hybrid FEA–machine learning (ML) framework to estimate qult of strip footings on slopes, overcoming the accuracy limitations of existing analytical solutions for different slope-foundation configurations. The dataset of 600 finite element simulations was developed under the Mohr-Coulomb plane strain constitutive framework. Six variables were examined: unit weight (γ), cohesion (c), friction angle (φ), applied load (P), foundation width (B), and embedment depth (Df). Seven predictive models were developed: multiple linear regression, polynomial regression, support vector regression, decision trees, random forests, k-nearest neighbors, and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost). Model performance was assessed using R², RMSE, MAPE, and the a20 index, with R² and RMSE as the primary ranking criteria, while Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) were applied to interpret feature contributions. XGBoost has the highest prediction accuracy on both the training and test datasets. It is followed by Support Vector Regression (SVR). The most influencing parameter in all seven models was the foundation depth (Df), followed by the friction angle (φ) and the foundation width (B), while the slope angle consistently decreased the predicted bearing capacity. The results confirm the accuracy, interpretability, and computational efficiency of the integrated FEA-ML approach as an alternative to traditional bearing capacity analysis.

The City of Bengkulu, the capital of Bengkulu Province, has also seen significant infrastructure development in recent years. This study aims to identify the characteristics of cohesive soil in the Tanjung Jaya area, Bengkulu City, and its application in designing shallow footing. The initial phase of the study includes sample collection, followed by tests of the soil's physical properties, such as moisture content, volume weight, specific gravity, grain size analysis, and Atterberg Limits. The results classify the soil in this location as elastic silt (MH). Mechanical properties testing was assessed through unconfined compressive strength and consolidation tests. Foundation modeling, based on the soil's physical and mechanical properties, was conducted using a finite element method-based application at one sample point, utilizing the lowest values of unconfined compressive strength (qu) and shear strength (Su) from the two test points at depths of 0.75 m and 1 m, as well as Foundation width variations, for a more conservative approach. The most minor safety factor obtained was 1.440, and the largest was 4.654, with the maximum vertical load reaching 109.30 kN/m² at a depth of 1 m and a foundation width of 2 m. Keywords: Cohesive soil, physical properties, mechanical properties, element method, shallow footing

Abstract

Ketahun is one of the areas in North Bengkulu Regency, Bengkulu Province, which is affected by seismic activity, with geological conditions dominated by sedimentary from Bintunan Formation, which influence soil characteristics for geotechnical planning. Previous research on three-dimensional (3D) geospatial modeling in Bengkulu region was generally limited to soil technical parameters, while  soil unit weight parameters were rarely used. This study aims to make 3D modeling of subsurface structure and soil unit weight distribution (γsat, γb, and γd) in Ketahun using geospatial approach. The research utilize data from field investigations at 15 Cone Penetration Test (CPT) points, which were then empirically correlated determine soil unit weight values. The 3D modeling was built using Leapfrog Geo application, through the Implicit Geological Modeling approach based on Radial Basis Function (RBF), while the distribution of bulk density parameters was estimated using Ordinary Kriging (OK). The validation results showed an R2 (0,95 - 0,96), RMSE (0,48 – 0,55), and MAE (0,34 – 0,46) proving that this 3D model is able to represent the spatial distribution of soil parameters measurably, with consistence parameter relationships, where γsat > γb > γd. The average values obtained for untuk  γsat is 19,77 kN/m3, γb is 19,67 kN/m3, and γd is 15,82 kN/m3. The results of this study are expected to provide insight into the subsurface and distribution of bulk density to further geotechnical analysis for support the planning of earthquake-resistant building structures.
