Abstract

Background: Tooth eruption, the movement of teeth toward the oral cavity clinically marked by the emergence of the cusp or incisal edge, is very important in determining the chronological age of a child. Unfortunately, tooth eruption in 6-12-year olds on the island of Madura has yet to be investigated. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze differences in permanent tooth eruption between boys and girls aged 6 to 12 years old on Madura. Methods: This study employed an observational analytic design in combination with a cross-sectional approach. The samples used in this study were selected by means of simple random sampling technique. Post-selection informed consent of the child subjects was obtained with their chronological age being assessed and determined prior to tooth eruption. The normality of the data was subsequently analyzed by application of a one sample non-parametric Kolmogorov Smirnov test. Thereafter, repeated Anova tests were conducted to determine differences in the permanent tooth eruption of the subjects. Results: Based on the normality test results, the significance value of the permanent maxillary teeth in the male subjects was 0.993, while that of their permanent mandibular teeth was 0.695. In contrast, the significance value of the permanent maxillary teeth in the female subjects was 0.970, while that of their permanent mandibular teeth was 0.918. According to the results of the repeated measure ANOVA test, differences existed in the eruption of the permanent maxillary and mandibular teeth between the males and females with a significance value (ρ) of 0.020. The mean value of permanent mandibular tooth eruption in the females was 56.59 ± SD 33.403, while that of their permanent maxillary tooth eruption was 50.77 ± SD 34.201. The mean value of the permanent mandibular tooth eruption in the males was 55.31 ± 33.024, while that of their permanent maxillary tooth eruption was 48.77 ± SD 34.201. Conclusion: On Madura, the permanent teeth of chronological 6-12-year old females, particularly their permanent mandibular canine teeth, erupt earlier than those of their male counterparts.

Abstract

Autistic children have poor oral hygiene levels higher than normal children. Dental and oral health problems that often occur in children with autism are the risk of dental caries which is higher than other dental and oral diseases. Frequent consumption of cariogenic foods and impaired coordination of the tongue muscles result in a tendency to eat food and difficulty swallowing, resulting in the formation of debris. The high value of debris causes calculus and if left further it will develop into worse tooth and gum damage. Objective: To describe appropriate learning methods for children with autism in improving their brushing skills. Methods: Search journals for 2016-2021 on Google Scholar, Pubmed, and Sciendirect databases. In the 8 journals used, 4 of them used quantitative research methods, 2 used prospective research methods, and 2 others used cross-sectional research methods. Results: The various methods obtained are the use of the PECS method; Yoga Therapy; iPads; Social Stories, TEACCH method, Puzzle Series; and Videos. Several kinds of learning methods are appropriate and can be recommended for children with autism, namely the video learning method which is considered better and can attract the attention of children with autism in improving their brushing skills.

Abstract

Down syndrome it is also called trisomy 21 because it has three chromosomes on chromosome 21, whereas normal people only have two. This occurs because chromosome 21 cannot separate during the cell division process, resulting in individuals with 47 chromosomes. The physical and psychological limitations experienced by children with down syndrome cause a lower ability to maintain oral and dental health and result in a higher risk of dental caries compared to normal children. Several recent studies explain that the role of parents and teachers is needed to improve oral health maintenance in order to reduce the risk of dental caries in children with down syndrome. This research aims to determine the relationship between the role of parents and teachers in keeping oral health and dental caries in children with down syndrome in the North and East Surabaya areas. This type of research is a cross sectional analytical research with 37 down syndrome children, parents and teachers as respondents. The data collection instruments used were questionnaire sheets and DMF-T examination sheets. The technical data analysis uses the Spearman rank test and multiple regression. The results of the research show that there is a significant relationship between the role of parents and teachers in maintaining oral health and dental caries in children with down syndrome. Conclusion: More active role of parents and teachers is needed in reducing the rate of dental caries in children with down syndrome.

Abstract

Children with Down syndrome cannot perform dental and oral hygiene independently due to cognitive and motoric limitations, even though this is important for optimal dental and oral health conditions. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between educational level and parental occupation with the level of dental and oral hygiene of people with Down syndrome in the Surabaya area. The research design was cross-sectional. The sample size was 100 respondents consisting of parents and children with Down syndrome who were selected by simple random sampling technique. Primary data collection was carried out by filling out a questionnaire to find out the level of education and occupation of parents; while a clinical examination of the oral cavity was carried out to measure the level of dental and oral hygiene using OHIS measurements. Analysis of the relationship test between variables was carried out with the Chi-square test. The results showed that the p-value was 0.306 for the correlation analysis between parents' education level and oral hygiene level, and 0.208 for the correlation analysis between parents' occupation and oral hygiene level. It was concluded that the level of dental and oral hygiene of children with Down syndrome in the Surabaya area was not related to the level of education and occupation of their parents. Keywords: dental and oral hygiene; down syndrome; parent; education; work; parent ABSTRAK Anak dengan down syndrome tidak bisa melakukan kebersihan gigi dan mulut secara mandiri karena adanya keterbatasan kognitif dan motorik, padahal ini penting untuk mendapatkan kondisi kesehatan gigi dan mulut yang optimal. Down syndrome often cannot maintain their own oral hygiene, which can lead to dental health problems such as periodontal disease. Therefore, social support from parents is needed to overcome difficulties in maintaining their dental health. The purpose of this study was to analyze the social support received by parents who have Down Syndrome children based on the characteristics of education level and occupation. Method: This study is an analytical study using a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted in SLB in the city of Surabaya involving 14 SLB with Down syndrome. The respondents involved in this study were 100 Down syndrome parents, using a simple random sampling technique. Respondent characteristics were obtained through primary demographic data, while social support was obtained through filling out a questionnaire. Chi-Square was used to analyze the relationship between social support and the characteristics of education and occupation of Down syndrome parents. Results: there is a significant relationship between education level and social support received by Down syndrome parents (p value 0.005 <0.05); there is a significant relationship between work and social support of parents with Down syndrome (p value 0.009 < 0.05) Conclusion: The level of education and work of parents with Down syndrome have an effect on the social support received by parents with Down syndrome in terms of their children's dental health. In the future, it is recommended to develop intervention programs that focus on improving their knowledge and skills in caring for the dental health of children with Down syndrome

Abstract

Oral health is an important aspect of maintaining overall health. Street children are a vulnerable group with limited access to health information and services, especially oral health. The problem identified by researchers is the inadequate knowledge of oral health among street children. The purpose of this study was to understand the difference in dental health knowledge before and after providing education using pop-up books to street children. The research method used was a pre-experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. The sample consisted of 36 street children at Sanggar Alang-Alang. Data were collected using questionnaires administered before and after the education session. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon test. The results of the study showed a significant difference in the average knowledge score before the intervention, which was 58.47 ± 9.770, and increased to 84.44 ± 6.947 after the pop-up book intervention (ρ=0.000). Conclusion: there was a difference in dental health knowledge before and after the intervention using pop-up books.
