It is recommended to replace a toothbrush every 3 months so that bacteria does not accumulate, but the average Indonesian people replace it at least once every 10 months. Objective: To determine the use of chemical disinfectants and traditional disinfectants to reduce the number of microbes on toothbrushes. Methods: Literature review, articles obtained through the Google Scholar database (2016-2021) using PICOS as a determinant of inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria. Results: The effective chemical disinfectants were 2% NaOCl, listerine, chlorhexidine gluconate, and povidone iodine, while the effective traditional disinfectants were vinegar with 5-8% glacial acetic acid, 1% vinegar, 38% white vinegar mixed with salt solution. 3.5%, 50% white vinegar solution, 38% white vinegar solution, garlic, lime juice, rosella flower decoction, neem, guava leaves, green tea leaves, papaya leaves, baking soda, salt, and black tea leaves. Conclusion: Chemical disinfectants that have been shown to reduce the number of bacteria on toothbrushes are NaOCl 2% and traditional disinfectants that have been shown to reduce the total number of microbes on toothbrushes are vinegar with 5-8% glacial acetic acid, and 1% vinegar and 38 white vinegar solution. % mixed with a 3.5% salt solution has been shown to reduce the total number of bacteria on the toothbrush. Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major concern in clinical health education settings due to its airborne transmission risk. This study aimed to analyze the risk of TB transmission and evaluate the implementation of Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) by students during preventive dentistry procedures in the JKG Care Service Laboratory at Poltekkes Semarang. Using a descriptive-analytic method with a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 60 students through structured questionnaires and direct observation. The results showed that 73% of students demonstrated moderate IPC behavior, and 67% of the laboratory conditions were rated as moderately compliant with standards. Bivariate analysis revealed no significant relationship between student IPC behavior and laboratory conditions (p = 0.885), but there was a significant relationship between IPC behavior and the implementation of preventive dentistry procedures (p = 0.012). These findings indicate that student compliance with IPC is more influenced by procedural application than environmental factors. Strengthening IPC training and supervision during clinical practice is crucial to minimize TB transmission risk in dental health education settings. Abstract

Children with intellectual disabilities have a higher risk of dental and oral health problems, this is because they have mental deficiencies and limitations to carry out optimal cleaning of their own teeth. Teachers' knowledge about maintaining oral hygiene for mentally retarded students at SLB BC Optimal Surabaya is in the poor category. Meanwhile, the debris index value measured using the debris index for mentally disabled students is in the bad category, namely 2.17. The latest data update on students' dental health at SLB Pedagogia in 2022 is that mentally disabled students have difficulty in self-development, one of which is how to brush their teeth properly, the majority of students experience bad breath. Oral hygiene care skills for mentally disabled students can be done by involving teacher assistance with innovative methods, namely singing. The singing method can have a fun and memorable impact on mentally retarded students. Practicing oral hygiene care skills for mentally retarded students can be done with the assistance of parents and teachers with the stimulation of singing methods. The results of the community service activities that have been carried out have obtained the following results: oral hygiene care module for students with intellectual disabilities, increased knowledge and skills of teachers and parents regarding correct oral hygiene care, increased oral hygiene care skills for mentally disabled students in SLB Pedagogia in Surabaya City, reduced risk mentally retarded students' bad breath.

Abstract

Background: Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by trisomy of chromosome 21. Individuals with Down syndrome have immunological deficiencies that increase their susceptibility to oral infections, including dental caries. One important factor affecting the prevalence of dental caries in children with Down syndrome is parental understanding. Purpose: This study aims to examine the relationship between parental knowledge of oral health maintenance and the incidence of dental caries in children with Down syndrome visiting the Dental and Oral Hospital of Universitas Airlangga in 2025. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 30 parents of children with Down syndrome attending Dental and Oral Hospital of Universitas Airlangga. Data were collected using a questionnaire to assess parental knowledge and a DMF-T index to evaluate the children's dental caries status. The relationship between dental caries incidence and parental knowledge was examined using the Spearman rank correlation test. Results: Up to 21 parents or guardians (70%) exhibited a deficient degree of understanding, and 10 children (33.3%) exhibited significantly elevated DMF-T scores. The Spearman rank test indicated a significant correlation (p = 0.023), indicating that there was a relationship between parents’ knowledge of oral health care and dental caries in kids with Down syndrome visiting Dental and Oral Hospital of Universitas Airlangga. Conclusion: Dental cavities in children with Down syndrome are inversely correlated with parental or guardian knowledge; the higher the caries rate, the lower the knowledge.

Abstract

Background:  In pregnant women, gingivitis can result from hormonal fluctuations, local oral conditions, and behavioural factors. Bacteria and inflammatory mediators may enter the circulation and reach the uterus, which can increase the risk of low birth weight and preterm delivery. The decoction of green betel leaves exhibits antibacterial properties that may help prevent gingivitis. Purpose: This study addresses the high prevalence of gingivitis among pregnant women at Unit Pelayanan Terpadu (UPT) Pusat Kesehatan Masyarakat (Puskesmas) / Health Centre Kamal. It aims to evaluate the effects of gargling a 10% green betel leaf decoction on gingivitis in pregnant women at UPT Puskesmas Kamal, Bangkalan District. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design, involving 83 pregnant women as respondents. The gingival index, as proposed by Loe and Silness, was measured both before and after gargling to assess the impact of the intervention. Additionally, an observation sheet was utilised to evaluate participants’ adherence to the gargling regimen at home. Data were analysed using the Wilcoxon test. Results: The results indicated an improvement in the average initial gingival index from 2.1013, classified as severe, to 1.2787, classified as moderate. The Wilcoxon test yielded a significance value of p<0.05, demonstrating a statistically significant effect of gargling a 10% green betel leaf (Piper betle L.) decoction on gingivitis in pregnant women at UPT Puskesmas Kamal, Bangkalan District. Conclusion:  Betel leaf (Piper betle L.) can reduce the prevalence of gingivitis in pregnant women.
