Abstract

Municipal solid waste (MSW) management must be sustainable in order to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and address health, environmental, and disposal challenges caused by the vast amounts of trash generated. MSW management going wrong puts locals in danger. In Pakistan, the production of municipal solid trash is rising daily. Urban settlers and other organizations gather a lot of waste in various forms, usually defiling and making our surroundings uninviting. Due to the indiscriminate dumping of various wastes, the soil quality in the metropolitan area has decreased as a result of solid and liquefied waste disposal. Significant environmental concerns regarding soil and water pollution arise from transferring contaminated garbage and mixed fluid outside of waste disposal borders. The impacts of municipal garbage disposal on soil and water quality at open waste dumping sites were the main focus of this review. Using a soil and water quality index, in many regions of the world especially in regions where waste management practices are insufficient, the contamination of soil and water owing to incorrect municipal solid waste disposal is a serious environmental hazard. Open dumping, unregulated landfilling, and illegal dumping are examples of improper waste disposal practices that can result in pollution that affects the quality of the soil and water. They must also seek to identify sustainable waste management solutions. The effect of these emitted gaseous emissions has, however, been thoroughly researched. To safeguard the environment and public health, quick action must be made to control trace element pollution.

Abstract

Abstract This article presents a codicological analysis and consistency in the use of rasm 'uthmānī rules in ancient Quranic manuscripts found in Pakis village, Sale District, Rembang Regency. This research is qualitative with a philological approach. The philological method is used to reveal aspects of the codicology of the Mushaf, while the coherence test is based on six rules formulated by al-Suyūṭi, namely, the ḥadhf al-Ḥurūf rules, the ziyādah al-Ḥurūf rules, the al-Hamz rules, the al-Badl rules, the al-Faṣl wa al-Waṣl rules, and Mā Fīhi Qirā`atāni fa Kutiba ‘alā Iḥdahumā. Based on data testing that has been carried out, it was discovered that the studied manuscript was copied in the 19th century. This is demonstrated by the paper supports with the PROPATRIA watermark and the HIV DELDEN countermark, as well as the chainline without a shadow. The condition of the mushaf is uncovered and corrupted in several parts, so that only surah al-Māidah to surah al-Ghāshiyah remain. This manuscript does not have any illumination, but there are several symbols showing the change of juz, rukū', end of verse and name of surah. Copying Mushafs does not consistently use the rules of rasm uthmānī in terms of adding letters, subtracting letters, hamzah, replacing letters, separating and connecting letters, and writing sentences that have multiple reading variants. This was caused by the absence of references to the writing of the Quran in Indonesia at that time. Keywords: Ancient manuscripts of the Quran, philology, rasm consistency.

Abstract

Providing adequate environmental health services is crucial in contexts of forced displacement, where over 70 million people—mostly in urban or informal settlements—often face prolonged displacement with limited access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH). The presence of these unmet needs of environmental health leads to a greater likelihood of falling sick, social unrest, and long-term inequality. Although the magnitude of the crisis is tremendous, there is a lack of in-depth understanding of the environmental health situation and responses in the context of long-term displacement. The proposed article will thus synthesize the currently available knowledge base on environmental health in prolonged displacement contexts, identify key conditions and issues, and provide suggestions for future action. This study employed a systematic scoping review methodology that adhered to the PRISMA guidelines. A search was conducted of 212 peer-reviewed studies, institutional reports (also known as gray literature, which refers to materials published outside of academic journals, such as NGO reports and working papers). The findings indicate that research on water, sanitation, and overcrowding has found substantial evidence, whereas other environmental health domains, including waste disposal, feminine hygiene, and air quality, have extremely low representation. Issues that have been faced are institutional fragmentation, lack of funds, and political constraints, which impede the sustainable provision of services. Excessive exposure to waterborne and respiratory diseases, as well as poor environmental conditions and failure to adhere to international humanitarian standards, are also highlighted as significant issues in the review. The paper emphasizes the importance of inclusive environmental health policies, enhanced stakeholder collaboration, and ongoing planning and management. It recommends integrating displaced populations into national systems, prioritizing critical health areas, and strengthening evidence to guide policy and practice—key steps to ensuring dignity, equity, and resilience in protracted displacement.

Abstract

Different anthropometric parameters have been proposed for assessing central obesity. The diagnostic performance of these anthropometric parameters and their ability to correctly measure central obesity for the professional community, like drivers, is questionable and needs to be assessed. The study aimed to examine the diagnostic performance of anthropometric parameters as indicators of central obesity in drivers as measured by waist circumference (WC) and to determine the best cut-off values for these parameters that would identify obese drivers. Anthropometric measurements from a cross-sectional sample of 197 professional drivers were taken under standard protocol. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis was used to examine the diagnostic performance and to determine the optimal cut-off point of each anthropometric parameter to identify centrally obese drivers. It was found that WC had a significant positive correlation with all other obesity indicators. The ROC curve analysis indicated that all the parameters analyzed had a good performance, but the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) had a more predictive value of the area under the curve (AUC). Optimal cut-offs to identify central obesity in drivers were 0.55, 2.06, 0.95, and 25.44 for WHtR, conicity index, waist-to-hip ratio, and body mass index, respectively. These cut-off points for different indicators can be used to detect central obesity for drivers.

Abstract

Abdullah Thufail Saputra, a Pakistani-Javanese descendant, was one of the most influential figures in the spread of puritan da'wah in Solo in the 1970s and 1990s. He founded the Majlis Tafsir Al-Qur'an, which is now the largest and most massive Islamic organization in Solo. This study uses a qualitative approach. This study is complemented by essential elements such as observations, as well as in-depth interviews with some of Thufail's closest people. This study also examines some of the necessary documents, especially Thufail era brochures, MTA study recordings, and other documents. This article tries to explore Abdullah Thufail's intellectual journey, starting from his traditional educational background, changing his outlook from a traditional person to later becoming a Salafi-puritan, his missionary struggle, and how he founded and developed the MTA. This paper also discusses the struggle of MTA in accepting the sole principle of Pancasila and how MTA subsequently changed orientation after joining the New Order circle in 1984. The author also argues that the doctrine of zakat and jihad, which Thufail interpreted, became the central pillar for further MTA da'wah.

Abstract

Majelis Tafsir Al-Qur’an (MTA) recently claims that they don’t make exegesis of  Al-Qur’an. But this opinion seems like different from the reality. It is fact that MTA has an exegesis  book and continues to  make exegesis of Al-Qur’an. This article describes the history of development and  MTA exegesis dynamics. Since the exegesis  was taught by the founder of MTA, Abdullah Thufail, MTA’s exegesis isn’t static. But has got many corrections, change, until revision. It is predicted that  MTA’s exegesis is going to get development and  continual.   Key word: MTA, tafsir, revisi, berkelanjutan.

Abstract

This paper examines the collection of manuscript of Tafsir Jalālayn in the Pondok Pesantren Bustanul Ulum, Sedan District, Rembang, by focusing on textological and codicological aspects. This study is crucial to do to view the characteristic form of the text contained in the ancient manuscript of tafsir Jalālayn which then led to findings on how the Quranic interpretation was studied at that time. This research is a qualitative research with a codicology and textology (philology) approach. This finding strengthens the argument that the study of tafsir, especially Jalālayn, was introduced in the Rembang area in the first half of the 19th century, so that it can revise the findings of Van der Chijs and Van den Berg about the absence of tafsir teaching in Rembang area throughout the 19th century. This study identifies several characteristics found in the manuscript text. First, the use of the interlinear translation (Makna Gandhul) and its Javanese codes helps the students to understand the contents of Jalālayn's Arabic interpretation. Second, the hierarchy of language contained in its translation as a form of reflection of the reader's culture in the Javanese environment. Third, the existence of marginal notes written in Arabic indicates that attempts to comment on Jalālayn had been made earlier in the area. Another interesting finding is the consistent and fairly well-established use of codes in Arabic grammatical analysis, which is an indication that Makna Gandhul had evolved in that century.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the study of the manuscript text of  H. Syu'aib collection from the village of Asempapan, Trangkil, Pati. This study aims to analyze the writing rules used in copying manuscripts at the time in the region. This research is qualitative with a philological approach. viewed from the perspective of rasm and ḍabṭ Ghānim Qaddūrī. This manuscript uses a mixed Rasm between Rasm imlā'i and Rasm uthmānī both from the rules of removal and addition of letters. While the writing of hamzah, badl, faṣl and waṣl generally uses rasm utmānī. However, some writings were found not match with the two rasm rules, such as the rules for removing letters, connecting and separating sentences that caused idghām. This discrepancy seems to be caused of no rule for reference in writing  manuscripts in Nusantara therefore the copyists of some manuscripts only relied on rote memorization. This finding shows that the copying of manuscripts in the particular region, even in Indonesia, generally does not always use the two rasm both are uthmānī and imlā'i which are the benchmarks in the general Islamic world. This study also highlights the commodification and migration of manuscripts in the region.

Abstract

Cigarette consumption represents a noteworthy health crisis internationally, posing risks especially to the youth. It is listed among the primary avoidable reasons for death internationally, with over 8 million casualties yearly, where more than 7 million are due to the direct use of tobacco and about 1.2 million are caused by second-hand smoke exposure. This research aims to investigate the psychological, social, and health risks to youth, particularly in regions like Sindh, Pakistan. This study investigates these impacts through a cross-sectional mixed-methods design involving 310 youth aged 15–25 years in Larkana, Sindh. Quantitative data was collected via structured questionnaires assessing social, psychological, and health impacts, while qualitative insights were gathered from semi-structured interviews. The quantitative analysis was done using SPSS to gather the actual figures, while the qualitative analysis was done using NVIVO software. The results revealed key predictors of social, psychological, and health impacts of smoking. Regression analysis showed that peer influence (β = 0.25, p < 0.001), smoking duration (β = 0.12, p < 0.001), and age (β = 0.08, p < 0.001) were significant predictors of social impacts. Psychological impacts were significantly influenced by smoking frequency (β = 0.18, p < 0.001), anxiety scores (β = 0.30, p < 0.001), and age (β = -0.04, p = 0.046). Health impacts were primarily driven by smoking duration (β = 0.22, p < 0.001), craving scores (β = 0.35, p < 0.001), and education level (β = -0.10, p = 0.013). Qualitative findings highlighted peer pressure, stress relief, and societal stigma as key drivers of smoking initiation. Health concerns and limited awareness of long-term risks further exacerbated smoking prevalence. The study concludes, peer pressure and social acceptance were key factors driving smoking habits, which were linked to anxiety, depression, and chronic health issues like respiratory problems. The study highlights the need to reduce stigma, raise public health awareness, and improve access to smoking cessation support, particularly for women. Policy recommendations include the need for culturally relevant anti-smoking campaigns, increased access to cessation resources, and the integration of tobacco education into school curricula.
