Abstract

Abdullah Thufail Saputra, a Pakistani-Javanese descendant, was one of the most influential figures in the spread of puritan da'wah in Solo in the 1970s and 1990s. He founded the Majlis Tafsir Al-Qur'an, which is now the largest and most massive Islamic organization in Solo. This study uses a qualitative approach. This study is complemented by essential elements such as observations, as well as in-depth interviews with some of Thufail's closest people. This study also examines some of the necessary documents, especially Thufail era brochures, MTA study recordings, and other documents. This article tries to explore Abdullah Thufail's intellectual journey, starting from his traditional educational background, changing his outlook from a traditional person to later becoming a Salafi-puritan, his missionary struggle, and how he founded and developed the MTA. This paper also discusses the struggle of MTA in accepting the sole principle of Pancasila and how MTA subsequently changed orientation after joining the New Order circle in 1984. The author also argues that the doctrine of zakat and jihad, which Thufail interpreted, became the central pillar for further MTA da'wah.

Abstract

This study described Immanuel Kant’s critique of the ontological argument, which he considered weak and flawed in proving the existence of God. Kant had been criticized by many philosophers -the philosophers who defended the ontological argument- as soon as he put forward the critique of the ontological argument. Immanuel Kant argued against the analyticity of "exists" and its status as a real predicate. He criticized ontological arguments, highlighting the distinction between logical and ontological necessity. Kant rejected attempts to derive the existence of a supreme being from concepts, stating that existence transcended conceptual boundaries. While sensory objects could be known through our senses, the existence of pure reason or thought remained unknowable without a priori knowledge. Our awareness of existence pertained to the unity of experience, and any existence beyond it was an unjustifiable illusion. In this study, someone would not disclose the critique of Kant’s critique of ontological argument.

Abstract

This article critically examines the commodification of Ramadan fasting rituals through a Marxist perspective. Situated within the discourse of Marxist social critique, it investigates how capitalism transforms religious practices into commercialized spectacles and ideological instruments. Drawing upon a conceptual and theoretical approach through critical literature review, this study synthesizes classical Marxist theories from Marx and Engels, as well as neo-Marxist frameworks including Gramsci’s concept of hegemony, the Frankfurt School’s critique of commodification, and Althusser’s theory of ideological state apparatuses. The analysis engages with empirical illustrations such as advertising strategies, shifting consumption patterns during Ramadan, and state-sponsored religious campaigns. This study is conceptual and does not rely on original field data, but instead critically analyzes existing literature and socio-cultural phenomena. The findings reveal the dual function of Ramadan within capitalist society: as a cultural critique of consumerism grounded in simplicity, empathy, and social solidarity, and simultaneously as a tool co-opted to reinforce consumerism, class stratification, and hegemonic ideology. By highlighting how Ramadan rituals subvert and support capitalist structures, this paper contributes to scholarly discourse on the intersection of religion, ideology, and political economy in contemporary Muslim societies.

Abstract

This study examines the pivotal role of women in the slametan tradition in Pungpungan Village, Bojonegoro, focusing on their authority in organizing, structuring, and adapting this Javanese ritual. While slametan is traditionally perceived as a male-led religious and communal event, this research reveals the significant influence women exert in determining key aspects of the ritual, particularly in food selection, scheduling, financial management, and intergenerational knowledge transmission. By exploring ethnographic accounts, this study highlights how women function as cultural custodians and ritual decision-makers, shaping both the practical and symbolic elements of slametan. The research also examines how food preparation extends beyond a domestic duty to a position of authority, with women dictating the culinary standards and ritual requirements. Additionally, the study illustrates the flexibility of slametan in adapting to contemporary sensibilities, showing how women negotiate tradition while maintaining its cultural essence. Through their expertise in managing rewang (communal labor), coordinating tahlilan, and determining religious offerings, women emerge as de facto leaders of the ritual. This study contributes to the broader discourse on gender and religious practices in Javanese Islam, challenging the perception of ritual authority as exclusively male and reaffirming the role of women as active agents in maintaining and evolving tradition.

Abstract

This study examines the life and spiritual phenomenon of Sabbatai Zevi, a 17th-century Jewish figure who claimed to be the Messiah and significantly influenced Jewish communities in Turkey and beyond. The academic problem addressed in this study is the historical and theological controversy surrounding Zevi’s messianic claims and their socio-religious impact. The methodology used in this research involves a historical analysis of primary and secondary sources, along with a literature review of existing studies on Zevi. The theoretical framework is based on religious mysticism and messianic movements within Jewish traditions, particularly the Kabbalistic interpretation of the Messiah. The results reveal the complexity of Zevi’s identity, his impact on Jewish and Ottoman societies, and the transformation of his movement after his forced conversion to Islam. The study concludes that Zevi’s influence persists through the Dönmeh community, whose secret religious practices continue to be a subject of scholarly debate. Abstract

The digital transformation has reshaped how digital-native university students experience religious life. This study examines how Muslim students in Indonesia engage with, interpret, and negotiate their religious practices in digital spaces. Using a qualitative digital survey design with narrative prompts, data were collected between April 15 and May 1, 2025 through an online narrative-style questionnaire completed by 84 Muslim students from STAI Al-Anwar Sarang Rembang, an Islamic college rooted in the pesantren tradition. Thematic analysis was employed to identify key patterns in spiritual transformation, online community participation, and the dynamics of authority and affect in digital religiosity. Findings indicate that digital media not only facilitates access to Islamic knowledge but also structures new patterns of hybrid worship and emotional engagement. Students demonstrate reflective agency in filtering online religious content and building virtual connections with fellow Muslims across diverse regions, while also facing challenges such as authority confusion, polarized viewpoints, and religious anxiety triggered by online exposure. The study concludes that the digital realm functions as an alternative and complementary arena for religious life among students and underscores the urgent need for critical, inclusive, and context-sensitive religious digital literacy to guide spiritual development in an increasingly mediatized society.
