Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the ability to listen to fairy tales through the application of a guessing strategy for class VII students of SMP Negeri 3 Masamba, North Luwu Regency. The type of research used was descriptive quantitative. The sample in the study amounted to 18 students. While the data analysis technique used was simple statistics based on the enthusiasm of students in learning. Based on the results of the study that in the initial test before being given treatment, the sample who obtained a score of 75 was 2 students or 11.12% and students who scored <75 were 16 students or 88.88%. Meanwhile, in the final test, after being given treatment, the sample received a score of 75 as many as 14 students or 77.78% and students who scored <75 were 4 students or 22.22%. In accordance with the description of the results of the study, it can be concluded that the ability to listen to fairy tales through the application of a guessing strategy for class VII students of SMP Negeri 3 Masamba, North Luwu Regency is adequate after being given a final test with the application of a guessing strategy.

Abstract

This is a pre-experimental research using one group pre-test and pos-test design, which aims at finding out the effects of Contextual Teaching and Learning approach in improving students’ ability in writing descriptive text at the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Sabbang. The population of this research is the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Sabbang. The total number of the population is 149 of the all eleventh students. The researcher took 20 students as the sample from one class by using cluster sampling technique. This research employed writing test as the instrument of data collection. The result of this test is used to assess to what extent Contextual Teaching and Learning approach can improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive text. After several meetings, this research found out that the use of Contextual Teaching and Learning approach is significantly effective to improve the students’ ability in writing descriptive text. It is supported by looking at the mean score obtained by students through pre-test is 51.55 and post-test is 76.86.

Abstract

The research aimed at investigating two major problems which have correlation to the implementation of English for Specific Purposes at the computer science study program. They are: (1) the learners' attitude and motivation towards English, and (2) the correlation between the attitude and motivation of learners and their achievement in English.

Abstract

Artikel ini membahas dua isu utama yaitu efek dimensi budaya (kolektivisme dan high-power distance) pada implementasi refleksi kolektif dan alternatif untuk memoderasi efek buruk budaya pada realisasi refleksi kolektif. Hasil investigasi literatur pada artikel ini mengungkapkan bahwa kolektivisme dan ­high-power distance memberikan dampak positif dan negatif terhadap realisasi refleksi kolektif. Kolektivisme berkontribusi menciptakan suasana dengan dorongan emosional yang kuat di kalangan guru. Namun, kolektivisme secara negatif berkontribusi pada keengganan untuk berkomentar dan dikomentari karena adanya rasa tanggung jawab untuk mencegah konflik. Kondisi ini dapat menyebabkan kurangnya kekritisan dan menghambat perubahan. Sehubungan dengan efek hig-power distance, terungkap bahwa refleksi kolektif dipengaruhi secara negatif. Serupa dengan efek negatif yang dihasilkan dari internalisasi kolektivisme, high-power distance juga mendorong keragu-raguan dalam berkomentar dan dikomentari. Selain itu, juga menimbulkan ketergantungan pada ahlinya, kurangnya kreativitas, dan kurangnya keinginan lebih. Untuk mengurangi efek negatif dari dimensi budaya, beberapa alternatif disarankan dalam artikel ini, yaitu mempertahankan Lesson Study (LS) dan Action Education (EA), secara eksplisit mengundang guru pemula untuk terlibat dalam tahap refleksi, dan mempromosikan refleksi yang berorientasi pada makna.

Abstract

Penggunaan teknologi dalam dunia pendidikan saat ini menjadi kebutuhan mendesak khususnya dalam meningkatkan kompetensi guru untuk merancang dan menerapkan pembelajaran yang lebih efektif dan bervariasi. Namun ditemukan beberapa permasalahan mitra dalam hal ini, diantaranya: 1)mitra belum melakukan pembelajaran diferensiasi untuk memenuhi kebutuhan belajar siswa yang bervariasi, 2) belum mampu mendesain multimedia interaktif, dan 3) kolaborasi guru dalam merencanakan, melaksanakan, dan merefleksikan pembelajaran masih sangat jarang dilaksanakan. Salah satu pendekatan untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut adalah penerapan Lesson Study, oleh karena itu PKM ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi guru dalam menerapkan pembelajaran diferensiasi berbasis multimedia interaktif yang dilakukan melalui LS.  Mitra yang dilibatkan adalah guru Bahasa Inggris dari dua sekolah. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan terdiri dari: sosialisasi, pelatihan, penerapan teknologi, pendampingan dan evaluasi, dan keberlanjutan program. Berdasarkan pelaksanakan kegiatan ditemukan bahwa kompetensi guru dalam merancang dan melaksanakan pembelajaran diferensiasi dapat meningkat begitupun dengan kemamuan membuat multimedia interaktif. Selain itu kolaborasi guru dalam merancang, melaksanakan, dan merefleksikan pembelajaran meningkat. Guru mampu merespon kebutuhan siswa dengan lebih baik, serta meningkatkan keterampilan teknologi mereka dalam menciptakan lingkungan belajar yang lebih menarik dan inklusif. Para guru mitra dasarankan untuk melakukan pengembangan berkelanjutan melalui komunitas belajar yang sudah dimiliki.

Abstract

This study aims to improve students' ability to identify simple past tense sentences through the use of interactive multimedia and differentiated instruction in the classroom. The context of English language learning, many students struggle to understand grammar material, particularly in recognizing the correct tense structure in sentences. Therefore, this study focuses on implementing methods that can help students better understand the use of the simple past tense effectively. The study uses a classroom action research method carried out in two cycles. The first cycle began with the use of an interactive video, followed by group discussions and individual assessments. The results showed that despite the implementation of content and process differentiation, most students did not meet the desired target. The second cycle, improvements were made through homogeneous grouping, more frequent pauses in the video, and increased support for students with lower competencies. The results of the second cycle showed a clear improvement in students' abilities, with 53% of students achieving the "Excellent" category and 42% in the "Good" category. These findings indicate that the application of appropriate differentiation strategies, structured multimedia use, and additional support for students with lower competencies can enhance students' learning outcomes in identifying simple past tense sentences. This study also emphasizes the importance of continuous reflection in teaching to improve English learning outcomes.

Abstract

In fostering students’ speaking skills, it is necessary to apply learning strategies that are consistent and in line with developing educational patterns. Problem Based Learning (PBL) is one option for fostering students’ speaking skills because it allows students to think critically about the problems raised in their learning and contributes to their goals in choosing an English major. This research aims to analyze the process of implementing the PBL strategy in fostering students’ speaking skills in class. This research is a qualitative quantitative study conducted at Cokroaminoto Palopo University with a focus on students’ speaking skills. The research was conducted in May–June 2024. This research provides valuable insights and recommendations for optimizing the use of PBL strategies in developing students’ speaking skills. Based on data analysis and interpretation, it is found that the implementation of PBL at the second semester students’ fulfilled four of the five characteristics of PBL proposed by Arends’. They are (1)The problems posed are real-world problems so that students’ can ask questions related to the problem and find various solutions to solve the problem; (2)The learning carried out by students’ is authentic inquiry and in accordance with scientific strategies; (3)The resulting product can be in the form of real work or a demonstration of the problem being solved for publication by students’; (4)Students’ work together and motivate each other regarding the problems they are solving so that they can develop students’ social skill.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan pemahaman bacaan siswa kelas VII pada pembelajaran bahasa Inggris melalui penerapan model pembelajaran SQ3R (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Review). Kemampuan pemahaman bacaan merupakan salah satu keterampilan penting dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, yang seringkali menjadi tantangan bagi siswa SMP, terutama dalam memahami teks yang lebih kompleks. Model SQ3R dipilih karena telah terbukti efektif dalam membantu siswa mengorganisir dan memahami informasi dari teks dengan cara yang sistematis dan terstruktur. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK), yang dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus. Setiap siklus terdiri dari perencanaan, pelaksanaan, observasi, dan refleksi. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah tes pemahaman bacaan dan observasi kelas untuk menilai keterlibatan siswa selama proses pembelajaran. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya peningkatan signifikan dalam kemampuan pemahaman bacaan siswa setelah penerapan model SQ3R. Pada siklus pertama, skor rata-rata pemahaman bacaan siswa meningkat dari Post test 62.27 menjadi 70.09 pada siklusi I, meskipun masih terdapat beberapa siswa yang membutuhkan perhatian lebih. Pada siklus kedua, setelah dilakukan refleksi dan perbaikan strategi pembelajaran, sebagian besar siswa menunjukkan peningkatan yang lebih baik dalam memahami teks yang diberikan dengan nilai rata-rata 82.36. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa penerapan model SQ3R dapat meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan siswa kelas VII dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, serta dapat menjadi alternatif strategi yang efektif untuk diterapkan di kelas.
