Abstract

AbstractDrawing upon anthropological theory of resistance and testing its limits, I will present a closer observation on how dissenting voices to the state project of Sharia in contemporary Aceh look on the ground. With-out thereby renouncing its violent effects, some ethnographic stories I recount in this writing will reveal how the implementation of Sharia in contemporary Aceh has created inherently amusing situations and how it has occasionally become a humor producing machine. Abstract

This article aims to discuss the development of ancient Muslim settlements on the west coast of Aceh based on the findings of Islamic gravestones at the Binanga site in Subulussalam City, Aceh. This site is very unique, it is located inland and right on the banks of the Singkel River, which is connected to the highlands of Sumatra. There are 131 Islamic gravestones, and their shapes vary greatly. The results of the morphological analysis show that the gravestones were divided into two groups: Aceh gravestones (batu Aceh) and Barus gravestones (nisan Barus). There are no biographical inscriptions carved on the gravestones, however, the morphological analysis shows that these gravestones date from the 18th to 19th centuries AD. These tombstones indicate that Muslim communities began to settle permanently in the interior of Aceh's west coast in the 1700s. The emergence of these settlements is related to the migration of people from the highlands of Sumatra to the west coast of Aceh, which was motivated by the development of international trade centered in Singkel and its surroundings since the 18th and 19th centuries AD. Thus, the tombstone on this site is very important because gave the clear picture to understand the emergence of Muslim settlements on the west coast of Aceh in the past.

Oil palm is one of the plantation commodities that needs to increase its production as it is a major producer of vegetable oil. The expansion of oil palm plantations has been taking place in various regions, including Aceh, particularly in Ujong Krueng Village, Tripa Makmur sub-district, Nagan Raya regency. The purpose of this research is to explore the history of female labor in oil palm plantations and understand the lives of female workers in Ujong Krueng Village. The research methods employed include observation and interviews. The results indicate that female laborers are workers in oil palm plantations who earn wages from the landowners. The emergence of women as laborers in Ujong Krueng's oil palm plantations is due to the increasing number of plantations and their rapid growth, requiring a large labor force. The lives of female laborers in Ujong Krueng include: firstly, women have a dual role, working both in their homes and in public spacec; secondly, some women, especially those who are widowed or whose husband is are dealing with severe illness, take on the responsibility of being breadwinners; thirdly, the economic of the community is positively impacted by income generated from oil palm plantations, meeting the basic living needs; fourthly, women are now undertaking tasks that were traditionally performed by men, such as transporting harvested produce.

Abstract

This study focuses and emphasizes on the religious activities of islanders in Banyak Island, Simeulue and Nias. This research aims to find religious models and coexistence strategies in interfaith between island communities. These three islands are geographically close and inhabited by people with different religious identities. This research uses qualitative research with an ethnographic approach, data collection is done through in-depth interviews with informants who live on the three islands. The results showed that island communities have a collective ability to manage diversity to avoid conflict in the name of religion. Identity as an “island community” becomes social capital in interpreting collective identity. The open character of island communities is also a cultural capital that can suppress suspicion of different groups. However, the three island communities also have different characteristics in the religious moderation policy space. Nias Islands with a majority Christian population composition shows a fairly strong attitude of tolerance. The principle of kinship adopted by the Nias community serves to strengthen relations between religious communities. Simeulue Islands, whose majority population is Muslim, also shows a high level of tolerance by giving permission to build houses of worship for Christians who have just arrived in Simeulue in the last two decades. In the context of Pulau Banyak, where the majority of the population is Muslim, tolerance is only seen in the economic, market and fishing industry aspects. On the other hand, tolerance does not apply to permits to build houses of worship. This study also discusses the importance of the role of religious and social actors in strengthening community harmony on the three islands under study.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the actors involved in the implementation of quarry mining business licensing policies, understand their respective roles and interests, and the interactions between actors in influencing policy effectiveness. This study uses a qualitative method with a case study approach, relying on primary data from semi-structured interviews, indirect observation, documentation, and secondary data analysis. The Power-Interest Grid model is used in stakeholder analysis. The results of the study identify thirteen stakeholders involved, dominated by the “subject” type. Most stakeholders have high interests but low power. Two main actors, namely the Aceh Investment and Integrated Services Agency and the Aceh Energy and Mineral Resources Agency, have dominant power in licensing and supervision. The main findings indicate an imbalance of authority between the provincial and district governments, which has led to weak supervision, high risks of environmental damage, and reduced policy implementation effectiveness due to a lack of coordination and low participation of local stakeholders. This study recommends strengthening cross-stakeholder coordination, increasing local stakeholder participation, improving data transparency, and establishing fair, effective, and sustainable policies.
