Abstract

One of the causes of temporomandibular disorder (TMD), which is a bad habit of chewing on one side. The occurrence of TMD can be characterized by limited mouth opening of less than 40 mm. Maximum mouth opening distance can be influenced by gender, age, weight, and height. This study is intended to determine the interincisal distance of maximum mouth opening in unilateral chewing habit. By using descriptive observational study with a purposive sampling technique, it was obtained of 25 subjects, students from the Faculty of Dentistry, Mahasaraswati Denpasar University. Data collection was carried out by using a sliding caliper direct to measure the distance of interincisal when open the mouth. The results showed that 10 men (40%) had an average maximum mouth opening of 42.6 mm, 15 women (60%) had an average maximum mouth opening of 39.6 mm, 5 people (20%) with a body weight of 41-50 kg had the lowest average maximum mouth opening of 37.4 mm, 4 people (16%) with a body weight of 81-90 kg had the highest maximum mouth opening of 45.5 mm, 2 people (8%) with a body height of 151-160 cm had the lowest maximum mouth opening of 36.5 mm, 8 people (32%) with a body height of 171-180 cm had the highest maximum mouth opening of 42.3 mm and 25 people (100%) had a maximum mouth opening of 40.8 mm. It was con-cluded that there are 48% (12 people) subjects have an average maximum mouth opening distance with a limited category of 36.3 mm and 52% (13 people) subjects have an average maximum mouth opening distance with a normal category of 45 mm.

Abstract

Bolton analysis is one of the analyzes used in determining tooth size discrepancies, the ratio of size of mesiodistal teeth is very important in determining orthodontic treatment plans so that good occlusion can be achieved as a result of treatment. The aim of this study is to find out the width of mesiodistal teeth crowded with Bolton's analysis of Balinese men and women. This des-criptive research method using purposive sampling technique, used 40 models study samples of male and female from Balinese patients at the Mahasaraswati Denpasar University Dental Hospital. The largest contour of mesial to distal dimension of the tooth measured parallel to the occlusal plane. The results obtained were anterior ratios and the overall analysis of Bolton in the Balinese tribe. The anterior ratio of the Balinese men and women was obtained at 79.55%±3.40 and 61.57%±5.32. The overall ratio of Balinese men and women was obtained at 91.66%±2.57 and 102.50%±5.26. It was concluded that Bolton's anterior ra-tio and Bolton's overall ratio in crowded teeth of Balinese men and women show an average value that exceeds Bolton's ideal value, so that the location of faulty teeth of the Balinese tribe can be seen in the mandible.

Abstract

Introduction: Disharmony between tooth position, jaw relation and facial soft tissue has a significant effect on facial appearance. Anatomical facial appearance is determined by the lower third of the face, especially the position of the lips and related parts which are affected by the inclination of the anterior teeth. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a correlation between the angle of inclination of the maxillary incisors and the convexity of facial soft tissue in Balinese women using the Holdaway method. Materials and Method: This type of research was analytic observational with a cross sectional approach. This study used a sample of 31 lateral cephalometric photographs of Balinese females for tracing. Samples were taken by means of purposive sampling, based on specified criteria. Results and discussion: Pearson correlation analysis showed that the relationship between the angle of inclination of the upper incisors was significant. Conclusion: Based on this study, it can be concluded that there was a correlation between maxillary incisor inclination angle on the facial soft tissue convexity in Balinese females using the Holdaway method.

Abstract

Introduction: one of the malocclusion’s etiology is bad habits such as mouth breathing habit. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the mouth breathing habit through with the type of malocclusion. Materials and Method: the sampling method used was purposive sampling obtained from giving questionnaires to parents and clinical examination of the oral cavity of students at SDN 17 Dauh Puri Denpasar. The number of samples with mouth breathing habit were 50 samples. Classification of dentition malocclusion in students was assessed using a modified Dewey Angle Classification. Data analysis used the chi-square test. Results and Discussion: the results of this study were that the mouth breathing habit was more dominant in the Class I Angle type 2 Dewey malocclusion with a total of 25 students (50%) and in the Class I Angle type 4 Dewey malocclusion with a total of 14 students (28%). Conclusion: the conclusion of this study is that there is a significant relationship between the mouth breathing habit and the type of malocclusion.

Abstract

Introduction: Aesthetics in dentistry is increasingly becoming a major concern for patients and is often used as the main reason for dental care. One of the goals of orthodontic treatment is to obtain optimal facial aesthetics. Facial aesthetics are closely related to an attractive smile. The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the curvature of the upper lip in Balinese at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar. Materials and Methods: This research was a descriptive study with analytically processed research data. The research design was cross-sectional, using a sample of 115 students from the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar as subjects. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Subjects were photographed in a social smile pose, and the resulting photos were edited using a computer program to see the shape of the curvature of the upper lip. Results: The results showed that the average curvature of the upper lip was 51.3% upper direction, 20% straight, and 28.7% lower direction. Discussion: The curvature of the upper lip is influenced by the movement of facial muscles such as orbicularis oris, levator labii superioris, levator anguli oris, and zygomaticus major. Smile aesthetics are not only achieved by dentofacial improvements, but also accompanied by facial muscles that play an important role in facial aesthetics. Conclusion: The upward curvature of the upper lip was the most commonly found, followed by the downward and the straight curvature. There was no significant difference between males and females in the upper lip curvature in the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Mahasaraswati Denpasar students.
