Abstract

AbstractMathematical Creative Thinking Ability (MCTA) is a crucial skill for students in their mathematics learning. However, limited research exists on the inhibiting factors of Mathematical Creative Thinking (MCT), specifically among junior high school students. Therefore, this study aims to explore these inhibiting factors among junior high school students using a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through assignment tasks, observations, and interviews, wherein the tasks were designed as open-ended questions. The study identified themes generated from the data analysis, revealing several factors inhibiting students’ MCT. These factors include negative perceptions towards mathematics and its learning, intrinsic motivation, inadequate understanding of basic concepts, the experience of learning loss, low self-efficacy towards open-ended questions, low procedural understanding of open-ended questions, and insufficient teacher competence. Keywords: Mathematical creative thinking, school mathematics, open-ended problem, case study. Abstract

The learning process underwent a surprising change, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Minister of Education makes a decision to implement online learning. Because learning is carried out online, teachers and students must continue to adjust learning which is usually face-to-face, this is only through virtual. Researchers conducted observations at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tarakan, obtained information that in the implementation of online learning, students were often late for zooming, and sometimes students did not attend learning activities via zoom. Assignments given by the teacher are often late for students to collect. In addition to observations, interviews with mathematics teachers were also conducted, he provided information that the low enthusiasm of students to learn online, students' readiness to learn seemed to be lower than in direct learning. From the problems that appear in the field, the author is interested in conducting a research entitled "Identification of Student Interests in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tarakan in Online Learning in the Covid-19 Pandemic Period". The type of research used in this research is quantitative research. Based on the results of the research carried out, it was concluded that the interest in learning of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Tarakan students during Study From Home (BDR) during the COVID-19 Pandemic was in the medium category at 61%, in the high category at 17% and in the low category at 22%.Keywords : Interest in Learning, Mathematics, Online Learning Proses pembelajaran mengalami perubahan yang cukup mengejutkan, dikarenakan kondisi Pandemi Covid-19.

Abstract

Mathematics researchers and educators promoted problem-solving as an essential process and skill for every student, as it was closely related to the development of students’ mathematical abilities and necessary for solving problems they encountered, both at that time and in the future. Several studies indicated that Indonesian students’ mathematical problem-solving skills remained low. This study focused on 8th-grade students at a public middle school in Tarakan, North Kalimantan, who were struggling with mathematical problem-solving. The study aimed to describe the mathematical problem-solving process carried out by the students in the 8th-grade class. Using a case study qualitative strategy, the researcher collected data through assignments, observation, document analysis, and interviews. Data analysis followed the model by Miles et al. (2014), which included data condensation, data display, and drawing conclusions and verification. The findings revealed that students’ mathematical problem-solving processes involved three main themes: understanding the problem, problem-solving strategies, and answer verification. Additionally, two supplementary themes were identified: students’ attention while facing problems and their perceptions of the mathematical problem and the provided solution. These findings highlighted the importance of educational practices that strengthened problem-solving through instruction and enhanced their self-regulation when dealing with mathematical problems. Keywords: mathematics, problem-solving, Polya, word problems.
