Abstract

This article aims to explore the concept of asceticism in the perspective of modern Sufism and its application in economic life. The author is interested in this research because traditionally and in many circles, asceticism is understood as the practice of abandoning worldly pleasures to get closer to Allah, but the interpretation has developed in a more dynamic modern context. Therefore, the author wants to show that the teachings of asceticism do not require leaving the world or living in poverty. This research uses a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytic approach, which includes literature reflections on Al-Qur'an verses related to zuhud and the interpretations of contemporary Sufi scholars. These findings indicate that asceticism in modern Sufism is no longer viewed as an extreme ascetic practice, but rather as a balanced view that emphasizes spirituality and materiality. In an economic context, asceticism is translated as a work ethic that prioritizes honesty, justice and the use of assets for the common good. In this way, the concept of asceticism can contribute to the creation of a more just and sustainable economic system. This research aims to provide new insights for economic practitioners and Sufi enthusiasts in applying spiritual principles in everyday life. Apart from that, this research presents several modern Sufi figures who developed the concept of asceticism without promoting a life of poverty. These figures are an example of zuhud in economic activity and the business world.

Abstract

Sufism has been considered as teaching that contains tuberculosis (superstition, bid'ah and churafat). Socially, Sufism teaches life as an obstacle to the development and progress of the times so it is not surprising that Al-Ghazali is responsible for the backwardness and decline of Muslims. The accusations and criticisms of Sufism are often unfounded. These accusations and criticisms usually come from groups who do not understand Sufism comprehensively and do not see it from the Sufi perspective itself. As its nature and existence are often misunderstood and belittled. Internet technology, the economy of capitalism, the strengthening of the role of the state in people's lives have shifted the practice of kebatinan teachings. Sufi as a practice of life has never been relevant to today's life, the loss of the modern world has indeed covered all aspects of human life, but it will not stop some efforts to interact in spiritual life. Therefore, the author here is very interested in discussing: how is Sufistic da'wah in the digital era? How can the tarekat be able to use technology as a medium of da'wah? This researcher uses a descriptive approach. The descriptive approach can produce data in the form of a description of words either written or spoken form people and behaviors that can be observed by researchers. According to Candra Malik, today's Sufis do not need to always wear a robe, wear a turban, and hide from the public. Therefore, at this time the Sufis can no longer be detected through the way they dress or the ability to use information technology. Therefore, Sufism actors use social media to preach Sufi teachings of Sufism such as Sufi Humor, tasawufonline.com, and Podcasts belonging to TQN practitioner Pontren Suryalaya.

Abstract

Indonesia is a pluralistic nation with rich cultural diversity, one example being the Ruwatan Cukur Gimbal (Dreadlocks Shaving Ritual) in Dieng Village, Wonosobo Regency. Children with dreadlocks are regarded as special, and their hair is not cut until they or their parents request it, often after fulfilling unusual wishes such as a basket of eggs, a mouse, or traditional food. This study examines the tradition through cultural and Islamic perspectives using a case study approach, with data gathered from interviews, observations, and document analysis. Findings show that the ritual has deep historical roots linked to Kyai Kolo Dete and Nyai Roro Kidul. Beyond being a cultural event, it incorporates religious aspects such as Qur’anic recitations, prayers, and the Javanese hymn Kidung Rumekso Ing Wengi, attributed to Sunan Kalijaga. The ceremony reflects tolerance, spirituality, and communal harmony, while in an Islamic framework it promotes togetherness, respect for parents, and the significance of prayer. As the tradition continues to evolve, preserving it in harmony with Islamic values is crucial. Thus, the Cukur Gimbal ritual serves not only as a marker of cultural identity but also as a medium for reinforcing Islamic values within the community.
