Abstract

This study addresses the educational challenges faced by slow learner students, who exhibit lower cognitive abilities than their peers, particularly in the context of reading difficulties during elementary school. Recognizing the need for targeted interventions, this research focuses on the development of a culture-based digital sandpaper letter learning medium tailored to enhance the letter recognition and writing skills of slow learner students. The research employs a 4D development model, encompassing define, design, development, and dissemination phases. The sandpaper letters, featuring rough textures, serve as a sensory-motor stimulus to facilitate the learning process for slow learner students. Culturally relevant themes from Indonesia, such as dances, songs, musical instruments, names of weapons, tribes, food, and place names, are incorporated into the design to enhance engagement and connection with the material. Expert assessment sheets and teacher response questionnaires are utilized as assessment instruments. Results indicate that the developed learning medium is validated by experts and deemed practical by teachers. Furthermore, research trials demonstrate the effectiveness of the culture-based digital sandpaper letters in facilitating letter recognition and writing skills among slow learner students. This innovative approach not only addresses the specific needs of this student population but also contributes to the broader field of inclusive education.

Abstract

Implementing learning on mathematics material that does not provide facilities for students to explore critical thinking skills results in a lack of student learning outcomes. The teacher-centred learning process makes many students passive when learning takes place, and low student learning outcomes and critical thinking are also caused by the use of less varied learning models. This makes researchers apply an approach with PMRI (Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia or Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education). This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of PMRI in improving fourth-grade students' learning outcomes and critical thinking. This research was a pre-experimental study; the subjects in this study were fourth-grade students with 20 students. The design in this study is quasi-experimental with the form of one group pretest-posttest design. Data collection was carried out using test, observation and documentation techniques. Data analysis techniques were carried out by Normality Test, Homogeneity Test, and Paired t-test. The results showed that PMRI learning can improve students' learning outcomes and critical thinking. This is evidenced by the average value of learning outcomes pretest (69.65) and post-test (87.35). Then the average value of critical thinking at the first meeting (68.05) and the second meeting (78.85). The conclusion that can be drawn is that students' learning outcomes and critical thinking have increased after PMRI was applied to fourth-grade students.

Abstract

Effective education is one that explores and maximizes students' potential by creating learning experiences that fully engage them. This research aims to investigate the impact of the Project-Based Learning (PBL) method on the cognitive abilities of 5th-grade students during online learning. This study adopts a quasi-experimental design with the non-equivalent control group approach, utilizing purposive sampling. The sample comprises 20 students in the experimental group and 21 students in the control group. Research instruments include observation guidelines, cognitive ability tests, and documentation checklists. Data analysis involves tests for normality, homogeneity, and hypothesis testing using independent sample t-tests and paired sample t-tests. Results indicate a significant improvement in cognitive abilities in the experimental group, as evidenced by the paired sample t-test with a calculated t-value of 11.048 higher than the critical t-value of 2.086. This suggests that the Project-Based Learning method has a positive influence on the cognitive abilities of 5th-grade  students. The findings support the conclusion that the implementation of Project-Based Learning in online education has a notable impact on the cognitive skills.

Abstract

The goal of this study was to help fourth-grade children improve their critical thinking skills. This is a Classroom Action Research project. The study was divided into two cycles, each of which included planning, action, observation, and reflection. Muhammadiyah Notoprajan Elementary School fourth grade pupils were used as research subjects. The ability to think critically in mathematics is the focus of this study. The test was utilized as a means of gathering information. The descriptive analysis was employed in the data analysis. The findings of the study show that after learning with PBL, students' mathematics learning outcomes improve. From the first to the second cycle, the percentage of students who received the KKM grew from 42.85% to 78.57%. The findings also demonstrate that using the PBL paradigm in the classroom can help fourth-graders enhance their critical thinking skills. This can be observed in the percentage of pupils in the high group with weak critical thinking skills, which was 62.40% in the first cycle and increased to 77.40%in the second cycle. Because the student sheet given to students in this study was in accordance with the PBL syntax and provided ill-structured issues as a starting point at the beginning of learning, there was an increase. Students can use the PBL syntax in student sheet to address problems that aren't well-structured.

Abstract

Mathematics learning is often hindered by epistemological obstacles that affect students’ conceptual understanding. In geometry, students frequently struggle to identify and analyze fundamental properties of prisms, despite instructional efforts to improve comprehension. Prior research has primarily focused on procedural fluency rather than the cognitive barriers students face in interpreting mathematical definitions. Addressing this gap, this study investigates the epistemological obstacles eighth-grade students encounter in understanding prisms. Specifically, it examines students’ ability to determine whether a geometric figure qualifies as a prism based on definitional characteristics and to analyze the relationship between two figures with equal volumes. This qualitative study employs a phenomenological approach, involving six purposively selected eighth-grade students. Data were collected through written tests and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed in three stages: identifying core ideas from student responses, categorizing these ideas into conceptual groupings, and thematizing the categorized data into key discussion themes. Findings reveal that students struggle to identify prisms due to difficulties recognizing defining characteristics and determining bases, resulting from didactic transposition issues such as oversimplified definitions, misinterpretation of concepts, and curricular limitations. At the C4 level of Bloom’s Taxonomy, students also struggle to analyze mathematical statements due to reliance on teacher-provided examples. This study contributes to mathematics education by highlighting cognitive barriers in geometric reasoning. The findings emphasize the need for instructional strategies that enhance conceptual clarity and adaptive problem-solving, ultimately fostering deeper geometric understanding.

Abstract

The high volume of tomatoes during the peak harvest season often results in low selling prices and financial losses for farmers. This problem is exacerbated by the limited shelf life of tomatoes and the lack of skills in processing the harvest into high-value products. To address this problem, a leadership project was implemented to improve the skills of family welfare empowerment (FWE) mothers in the Dirgantara Asri Housing Complex in utilising tomato harvests to make products with high market value. The purpose of this workshop was to improve the skills of the community, especially among FWE mothers in the Dirgantara Asri Housing Complex, through training in processing tomatoes into a candied product called “Torakur” (Tomatoes with Date Flavour), which has significant market potential. Furthermore, participants are expected to market this processed product directly and through social media promotion efforts. The implementation method includes delivering educational materials, demonstrations of processing tomatoes into “Torakur,” and simple packaging and marketing techniques, both directly and digitally. This workshop aims to improve the skills of FWE mothers in producing and marketing “Torakur” independently, thereby creating sustainable local business opportunities. The measurement results were 100% very satisfied and 87.25% very useful. The results of this community service initiative show that the workshop has positively impacted community empowerment and strengthened interdisciplinary collaboration.       Abstrak Tingginya volume tomat selama musim panen raya seringkali mengakibatkan harga jual yang rendah dan kerugian finansial bagi petani. Abstract

The teacher’s ability to identify students’ sensory motor skills is very important. Sensory motor skills are the foundation for children’s handwriting skills. However, there is no instrument to measure teachers’ abilities in this regard. This study aims to test the validity and reliability of the instrument measuring teachers’ pedagogical knowledge in identifying students’ sensory-motor abilities. The data was collected using a questionnaire. A total of 552 teachers responded to the survey. The data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). The study results have developed a questionnaire with four construct components with 39 items. All four constructs have a high-reliability index. The EFA analysis indicated that all items were accepted with high agreement. The results prove that the instrument is highly valid and reliable. Based on the test results, this instrument is recommended for measuring pedagogical knowledge teachers in identifying sensory-motor abilities for elementary school students’ handwriting readiness. The measurement results can be used to determine appropriate training for teachers in developing the sensory-motor abilities of elementary school students. The innovation of this research is the development and validation of an instrument that can measure teachers’ pedagogical knowledge in identifying the sensorimotor abilities of elementary school students.
