Abstract

The proliferation of the English language has resulted in the blending of the English language and culture into the national and indigenous languages of emerging countries, including Indonesia. Although most people in North Aceh, Indonesia, are Acehnese, some restaurants and coffee shops are named in English. This study explores how English acculturation in the naming of food and coffee shops affects the visibility and preservation of local languages in this area. Using Berrys acculturation framework, the research categorizes naming practices into assimilation, integration, and isolation, analyzing how English, Indonesian, and Acehnese elements are blended or separated in commercial branding. Data were gathered through interviews with business owners and customers, as well as observations of shop names and menus. The findings reveal that assimilation is the most dominant strategy, reflecting a preference for English-language branding as a symbol of modernity and prestige, particularly among younger entrepreneurs. However, some businesses still adopt integrated or local naming conventions to retain cultural identity. These practices have sociolinguistic implications, as the increased dominance of English may marginalize the Acehnese language in public spaces. The study calls for culturally responsive language planning to ensure a balance between global appeal and local heritage in commercial language use.

Abstract

"Kuah Pliek" is the famous Acehnese cuisine that utilizes most ecological materials. However, only a few researchers have discussed the sustainability of the lexicon contained within the cuisine from an eco-linguistics perspective. This study focuses on Aceh's traditional cuisine, "Kuah Pliek U" (KPU), to assess the raw materials' eco-lexicon diversity and the Acehnese's knowledge of the identified eco-lexicon. This study employed a qualitative research design to address the problems in which data collection included in-depth interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), passive and active observation, and the examination of documents such as research reports and journal articles. The analysis of data then used a qualitative interactive model. The result demonstrates that the number of the eco-lexicon within KPU is about 35 – 40, as same as its total of raw materials and ingredients. It consists of biotic and abiotic, with plants comprising the majority. Linguistically, the lexicon belongs to the noun class, but semantically, it can be divided into nouns, prepositional eco-lexicons, and nouns and conjunction. This study also reveals that Acehnese knowledge of KPU has decreased, despite its continued popularity in Aceh society. It means that the existence of three dimensions that influence language sustainability cannot guarantee that local people's cultural knowledge will remain intact.

Abstract

The OLAY advertisement shows the challenges that women still face in STEM fields, such as discrimination and negative stereotypes about their competencies. This study aims to explore how the advertisement uses communication strategies to support women’s empowerment and change how people see gender issues. It also examines how brands can influence shifts in public views on gender roles. This research uses a qualitative content analysis method, with data taken from OLAY India’s 2022 YouTube advertisement. The data were collected by observing scenes that show gender inequality, taking screenshots, and analyzing them using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory: denotation, connotation, and myth. Semiotic signs are found in OLAY advertisements, both visually through the scenes in the video and verbally through the narrative and text displayed. This study shows that OLAY advertisements contain visual and verbal signs that represent the challenges faced by women in STEM fields and how they strive to fight gender stereotypes and inequalities. The findings of this study suggest that advertising can be an effective medium for promoting gender equality and changing society’s perception of women's traditional roles.
