Abstract

Abstract ADFELPS Tests has been widely used as a predictive test to help stakeholders in making decisions in levelling Indonesian defence attachés’ English proficiency before they are assigned abroad. Despite the significant demands in examining the test for the purpose of informing the test users about the army officers’ English competence, little research has attempted to evaluate this standardized test. The present study, therefore, aimed to analyse the connection between the receptive and productive language skills of the test. Besides, it is also keen to explore whether test takers’ age, frequency of test-taking and length of study affect their scores and which part of the test is the most difficult to complete. Thirty military officers participated by submitting their ADFELPS Test scores and answered a designed questionnaire. IBM SPSS 2.5 software was used to perform a variety of analysis procedures such as the Pearson correlation analysis, an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and an independent t-test procedure. It revealed a strong relationship between ADFELPS test score of language receptive skills (listening and reading) and the productive skills (speaking and writing) and listening is the dominant skill that correlates with all other language proficiency skills. Second, listening skill is particularly considered as the most difficult skill to acquire due to its complexity in the language learning process. Finally, participants’ age and their experiences of taking the test do not bring a significant impact on the improvement of ADFEPLS achievement score. In contrast, length of study preparation has helped test takers in increasing their test scores.

Abstract

This paper aimed to investigate students' perspective towards their NESTs and NNESTs' teaching styles and students’ preferred teaching styles. The participants for this study were collected from fifty-two English Education students of State Islamic University of Ar-Raniry who had studied with both NEST and NNEST. Data were obtained from a combination of administering questionnaire and conducting two focus group interviews. The questionnaire as the research instrument was adopted from Grasha's (1996) Teaching Style Inventory. Interviews were conducted to gain more comprehensive information regarding students' perception of NEST and NNESTs’ teaching style and differences that students identified when leaning with NEST and NNEST. Using descriptive statistical analysis for the questionnaire and utilizing Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña’s (2014) approach for qualitative interview analysis, the study revealed that both NEST and NNEST were perceived to have personal model teaching style and interestingly, it is also the participant preferred style. It also presented that NESTs and NNESTs have their distinctive roles in teaching-learning that are complementary to create a successful learning environment. The current research has contributed to enrich the literature work in the discussion of how students perceive NEST and NNESTs’ teaching performance with implications for educational practitioners, stake holders and institutions.

Abstract

Second language writing instructors remain to experience a great deal of difficulty to find the most effective approach for assisting students to the improvement of second language (L2) writing. Teachers might claim that they have provided their students with everything they require and that they have utilized the most effective method for the teaching tasks. By doing an explanatory mixed-method on students’ personal learning experiences, the study suggests that the teachers in the L2 writing subject are to adopt the process-genre approach, by incorporating real-context materials. The teacher also could improve students' understanding of the varieties and functions of text by exposing them to authentic texts. In addition to that, using the process-genre approach, learners might have a more relevant and sensible writing instructions. Therefore, the implementation of a reflection study to evaluate an L2 writing course has yielded valuable information for language instructors, particularly writing instructors, informing them of the most appropriate method to use in the second language classroom.

Abstract

This study investigates the complex realm of gendered discourse within the social media landscape, with an emphasis on revealing and analyzing language patterns. This research employs content analysis as a research methodology, utilizing Twitter's Application Programming Interface to extract tweets that include the hashtags #womenempowerment, #feminist, #menempowerment, and #malechauvinist for the purpose of this study. The decision to focus on these specific hashtags was deliberate, as they represent the spectrum of gender-related discourse, including emancipation, feminism, men's emancipation, and male chauvinism. The prevalence of these hashtags in online discussions demonstrates the various ways Twitter users interact with and express their views on these critical gender issues. This paper explored the intricacies of language usage, uncovering valuable insights that could be pertinent to discussions surrounding gender representation and equality. The findings provide researchers, practitioners, and society with valuable insights into effectively navigating the constantly changing landscape of gendered discourse on social media.   Abstrak: Dengan penekanan pada analisis pola bahasa, penelitian ini menyelidiki ranah wacana gender yang rumit dalam interaksi online di media sosial. Abstract

There has been a high level of agreement among scholars that communicative competence should be integrated within language learning and assessments. The study attempts to unravel the issues of how communicative competence can be assessed and measured in multilingual environments and how communicative language testing can be promoted. Using the content analysis approach as the qualitative method, it begins with the historical review of communicative competence that started at the beginning of 1970s to the most current concept involving intercultural communicative competence. Then, some practical models of communicative competence that can be used to propose a measurement of communicative competence are presented. Later, this article argues that there is an upsurge need to shift the paradigm of language testing and language assessment towards communicative competence. Moreover, the nature of language testing should not only concern linguistic or knowledge competence but also recognize the different varieties of English. This study implies that, in the field of language testing, language test designers should encompass the concept of communicative competence in the test construct to include real-life language use, and by extension, to increase test validity. As for teachers, a reform integrating communicative competence in classroom language assessment has become essential within the scope of language teaching.
