Abstract

AbstractAccording to Sulistyo-Basuki, documentation can be divided into definitions related to librarianship and definitions that have nothing to do with librarianship. Definitions related to librarianship can be further broken down into three major sections, namely the definition of supraposition, the definition of parallel and the definition of infraposition. Definitions based on supraposition assume that the documentation includes libraries. This means that all activities involving documents (all units of material containing information) are considered as a documentation function as long as these activities involve issues of procurement, processing, compilation, publication and dissemination of documents. This definition is influenced by the definition of Paul Otlet and Jesse Shera. Paul Otlet defines documentation as the collection, compilation, and distribution of every type of documentation in every field of human activity. Keywords: Sulistyo Basuki, Paul Otlet, Documentation, Librarianship.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Readathon Program and library socialization in enhancing critical thinking skills and reading comprehension among students at SMP Negeri 34 Kota Bekasi. Reading is a fundamental skill essential for learning and developing students' critical thinking abilities. According to Anisa et al. (2021), "a lack of literacy can hinder students' critical thinking skills." Therefore, programs that involve libraries as learning centers are necessary to increase students' reading interest. The research method employed a quantitative descriptive approach, involving 1,041 students from grades VII to IX, with a random sample of 270 students. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires, interviews, and tests to measure reading comprehension and critical thinking skills before and after the program was implemented. Statistical analysis used paired t-tests to examine the significance of score changes. The results showed that the average reading comprehension score increased from 65.4 to 78.9, and critical thinking skills improved from 61.3 to 75.7 after the program. The paired t-test indicated a significant increase at p < 0.05. Thus, the Readathon Program and library socialization proved effective in enhancing students' literacy. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of developing engaging literacy programs that involve libraries as learning centers. Schools are encouraged to continue developing literacy activities to foster a strong literacy culture within the school environment.

Abstract

Background of the study: Technological developments in the field of Library and Information Science (LIS) are increasingly rapid, along with advances in information and communication technology (ICT). One of the most recent innovations highlighted is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), such as ChatGPT, which is gaining recognition for its potential to support information analysis. Purpose: This research aims to explore and analyze previous research related to the implementation of AI as part of technological developments in the LIS field, using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. Method: The method used is Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using Publish or Perish (keywords: ‘library,’ ‘ICT,’ ‘AI’). Initial 48 articles (2019-2023) screened to 38. Data analyzed using Mendeley and visualized with VOSviewer. Findings: The study showed a significant upward trend in the number of studies on the application of AI in the LIS field over the period. AI is considered an effective tool in supporting information analysis. Researchers emphasized the importance of human intervention in the final analysis; results generated by AIs require further verification and analysis to ensure their validity and relevance in a more specific research context. Conclusion: AI plays a key role in the development of LIS and ICT. Library management must implement strategies such as AI integration, competency development, user AI literacy, and ethical policy development.
