Abstract

Mengenali deiksis sangat penting untuk dipelajari, terutama dalam pidato formal, untuk memudahkan audiens memahami maksud pembicara dengan kepribadian melalui penampilan, latar belakang, dan budaya mereka dari beberapa jenis komunikasi mereka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis deiksis yang dikenali dari TED Talk yang disampaikan oleh Charlie Jane Anders berjudul "Go Ahead, Dream about the Future" dan menafsirkan ekspresi deiksis dari pidatonya. Metode yang digunakan untuk menganalisis adalah kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif yang diusulkan dari teori Brown dan Levinson (1983) tentang lima jenis deiksis. Teknik pengumpulan data adalah mengamati dan mendengarkan pembicaraan, merekam, menyalin, meninjau transkripsi dan memilih pidato pembicara. Analisis data adalah mengidentifikasi ucapan, mengklasifikasikan ucapan berdasarkan jenis deiksis, menganalisis frekuensi, menafsirkan data, dan menarik kesimpulan. Ada lima jenis deiksis, yaitu deiksis orang, deiksis temporal, deiksis spasial, deiksis sosial, dan deiksis temporal. Hasil penelitian ini menemukan bahwa 79,54% dari 176 data dikategorikan sebagai deiksis persona, deiksis temporal (7,95%) menempatkan ide dalam waktu, deiksis spasial (6,81%) membantu memvisualisasikan skenario masa depan, dan deiksis wacana (5,70%) mengatur dan memperjelas pembicaraan. Penggunaan deiksis yang seimbang ini meningkatkan keterlibatan audiens, pemahaman, dan koherensi presentasi. Terakhir, jenis deiksis yang paling dominan digunakan oleh pembicara adalah deiksis persona. Deiksis ini menyoroti fokus pembicara dalam menciptakan hubungan langsung dan menarik dengan audiens, sehingga meningkatkan keterhubungan dan kedekatan.

Abstract

This study focused on the politeness strategy used by an English teacher in the “Kelas Full Day Sains dan Bahasa Program” at MTs Mathalibul Huda. It aims to analyze the types of politeness strategy and the dominant strategy in classroom interaction. The method of this study was a qualitative descriptive approach. Brown and Levinson's (1978) theory was chosen to analyze the types of politeness strategies. The data collection techniques were observing, recording, transcribing, checking the transcription and selecting the speaker's utterances. Analysis involved identifying utterances based on the politeness strategies used, analyzing frequency, interpreting data, and concluding. There were four types of politeness strategies: blunt politeness, positive politeness, negative politeness, and confidential politeness. The result of four meetings revealed that 42 out of 103 daters had a politeness strategy of 41% classified as “overt politeness,” 39 out of 103 daters had a positive politeness rate of 38%, and 16 out of 103 daters had a negative politeness strategy of 15% and 6 of 103 data were categorized as off-record of 6%. Therefore, the predominant type of politeness strategy used by English teachers in teaching and learning is direct openness. This indicates that the teacher valued concise directness.

Abstract

Differentiated instruction is a new paradigm curriculum especially conducted by teachers of MA Miftahul Huda Bulungan Jepara. Curriculum is innovated to essence independent learning conducted by teachers and students in learning process. School-based community has several opportunities for teachers and students to be innovative in implementing the Merdeka Curriculum Program. This school based-community service activity is aimed at providing knowledge to teachers and stakeholders at MA Miftahul Huda Bulungan Jepara, and training teachers and stakeholders at MA Miftahul Huda Bulungan Jepara by fostering differentiated instruction in order to contribute teachers’ professional development. The activity employed includes expository, Q&A, demonstration, and discussion. The result of school-based community service activity after getting post-test conducted to 17 teachers and stakeholders is that 72% teachers as participants claimed having knowledge and skills improved. Besides, the score average of post-test given was higher than the average score of pre-test of 49. Most teachers expected a sustainable mentoring program as the follow-up of school-based community. Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating the students’ ability, the problems of why they faced problems on English speaking. The triangulation of mixed methods was used in this study to show and measure the speaking difficulties encountered by students of 7th grade Junior High School at MTS N 2 Kudus. The quantitative data gathered from the speaking test result in by involving 31 students of MTSN 2 Kudus and the qualitative data gathered from the questionnaire and interview results from the selected students who meet criteria. The findings showed that the students’ ability was categorized difficulties in speaking English (26.009); the students have problems on vocabulary (100%), pronunciation (100%), grammar (83.9%), and fluency (96.7%).  The causes of problems faced by students on English speaking that English were not only having limited knowledge on the components of speaking skills including vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and fluency but also they have their own personal reasons, such shyness, anxiety, confusion, lack confidence, and fear of making mistake. This study indicated that the students’ ability should be increased by giving motivation and taught them with th esuitable and interested English speaking materials.
