Abstract

The research was aimed at identifying clusters and constraints on small holding pig keeping systems in Manokwari, Papua.  A total of 50 pig farmers were selected purposively from 15 villages in urban and rural areas of Manokwari. Questions were focused on the constraints of small holding pig keeping systems development in Manokwari. To classify constraints, a total of seven constraints have been noted.  Agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) and principle component analysis (PCA) were used for clustering analysis and grouping based on components of constrains. Feeding and breeding had Eigen values of 9487 and 2010, respectively. Furthermore, Feeding and breeding had higher variability compared with other components that were 63.250 and 13.397%, respectively (Cumulative axis 1 and 2 were 76.65%). Feeding and breeding had a positive coefficient correlation (Pearson n) rF1 that could be found in some farmers in urban and rural of Manokwari. Abstract

In Manokwari, Introduction Adoption Process of Three Strata Forage System (TSFS) is one way to improve productivity of grass along the year. The TSFS is an inovation to supply high quality grass to improve population of cattle. The relationship between cattle ownership with variables observability, compatibility and triability is significant, but with variables compiexity and relative advantage is non significant. The variables have significant value showed that the degree of relationship association is high enough. Model of TSFS can be applied by peasant based on the preference of individual peasant.

Abstract

Stakeholders and their networks play prominent roles in developing the agricultural sector. For instance, the economic, social, and environmental indicators of farms are sustained by the involvement of stakeholders and other relevant parties. Therefore, exploring the importance and roles of actors has become strategic and vital to recognize. This research aims to determine the strategic stakeholders' typology and mapping using their network analyses on integrated crops-livestock farming systems in West New Guinea. The study was carried out in Manokwari using the focus group discussion on twenty various represented individuals, groups, and mass institutions. The queries discussed were based on background, resources delivery, inter-connectivity amongst actors, intervention, and innovation. The result showed that the stakeholders in mixed crop-livestock are dominated by individuals' that privately manage the farms officially in accordance with the laws. The result also showed that the farming systems in West New Guinea, experience real threats which need to be lowered to mitigate the turn-back effect. The top five shared resources are access, satisfaction, power, knowledge, and time allocation. These resources tend to stay longer to sustain the strong needs of the farms, which are dominated by positive similarity with varying ranges of correlation ranging from negative, neutral to positive. This is because the stakeholders are reluctant to deliver the intervention and innovation, therefore, those with low interest and power need to be promoted to high interest and power by using aids, guidance, and services from each actor in the mixed crop-livestock farms business.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to obtain information on the readiness of the development of beef cattle using ranch system in Bintuni District, West Papua through the approach of four local foundations in terms of technical, social and economic. Research respondents were 62 families from four local foundations in Bintuni. Determination of technical feasibility of land used based on carrying capacity for each land. The technical feasibility of raising cattle was observed based on the knowledge of the community. Socio-economic feasibility was investigated based on food security and poverty level of society. Business feasibility was determined according to economic indicators namely B/C ratio, NPV, and IRR. The results showed that the aspect of land provided by the four foundations was feasible with the average carrying capacity based on fresh weight, dry matter and TDN basis were 1.8, 2.0 and 4.5 AU/Ha/year, respectively. About 70,91% of the farmers are free from poverty, and 46.54% are in food security status, which means that cattle raising will not be disturbed by the basic requirement of life but it needs an initial investment to support cattle raising. Based on the technical feasibility of cattle raising as much as 64,39% having no knowledge of breeding, therefore training and livestock education should be done. The business feasibility result shows that cattle raising on a breeding scale of 60 heads were feasible with positive NPV value of IDR 2.536.610,211, IRR of 23.09% and B/C of 1.22. Based on the overall indicators, it was concluded that the development of beef cattle in Bintuni regency was feasible to be done with requisite that improvement on land aspects and community knowledge about raising cattle.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the type of work and division of labor in the household-scale pig farm business and how much income was earned and generated by each male, adult female and child labor as a case study in the Manokwari coastal agroecological area Papua Barat. The method used is descriptive research method with survey techniques through interviews and field observations. The sample of farmers chosen purposively was 35 households out of 50 pig breeder. Farmers selected as samples are those who have been running pigs for more than 1 year. The parameters measured are labor involvement and contribution of economic beneficiaries. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, namely analysis of variance with further testing Scheffe using SPSS v.16.0. The results showed that the types of work carried out by domestic workers included processing and providing [A4] food, medicine and sanitation, selling live cattle on the market and selling carcasses. Female breeders have almost the same level of participation as men. In terms of working hours, women give higher time (521 hours/month) in 6 pig raising activities. Female workers contribute higher incomes than male workers.

Abstract

Abstract  This study aims to determine the level of exploration of animal diversity by the people in the form of hunting and utilization of hunted animals in Yembikeri Village, Rumberpon District, Teluk Wondama Regency. The research was conducted for 2 (two) months and was carried out using a survey technique through interviews with the people of Yembikeri village who carried out hunting activities. The results of this study were that the types of animals obtained were deer, wild boar and bandikut. The hunting method used is a combination of pairs of snares and hunting using bows, spears, machetes and assisted by dogs. Hunting activities are carried out in groups and during the day. Hunting locations in primary forests, grasslands, shrubs and watersheds with a fairly high success rate. The utilization of hunted animals is consumed and sold. Abstract

African Swine Fever (ASF) and Hog Cholera are highly contagious viral diseases in pigs, resulting in losses for pig farmers in Manokwari regency. Farmers cannot avoid panic and resignation. The study aimed to measure pig farmers' attitudes and knowledge about these infectious diseases. Farmers were selected from 12 villages and originated from 8 big ethnics from Papuan and non-Papuan. The findings show that most breeders are still in the early stages of their farming careers and have a long experience. Farmers tend to show concern about African Swine Fever and Hog Cholera. However, their attitudes towards pig diseases are considered less than optimal. Most farmers have fairly good knowledge about African Swine Fever and Hog Cholera. The primary source of information for farmers is obtained from other communities, indicating an exchange of information between pig farmers and the community.

Abstract

Understanding the real condition of pig farming in terms of management, feed and livestock production is vital to know. A study on the pig farming system has been carried out in Saukorem village, Amberbaken district, Tambrauw district, West Papua. The research method used is descriptive method with interview and observation techniques. A total of 30 respondents were successfully interviewed and observed the pattern of raising their pigs in the village of Saukorem, Amberbaken District. The results of the study found that the performance of farmers was dominated by elementary school education, with productive age and a sufficient number of family members as workers in the farmer's family. Pig farming business is still done extensively. Pig production is relatively low, this can be seen from the number of pigs in each age group. Pig breeds are obtained from other farmers in the village. The number of cages owned by farmers is still limited. The feed given to farmers comes from kitchen waste and agricultural products with a frequency of 2 times a day. Because the rearing system is still extensive outside the pen, the livestock are susceptible to diseases such as snoring and diarrhea. Livestock treatment is also still carried out by the farmers themselves.
