Abstract

This study analyzes the impact of Cash Waqf Linked Sukuk (CWLS) empowerment programs on beneficiaries’ welfare, financial inclusion, social participation, and spirituality. Using questionnaires administered to the beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries of the empowerment programs in Central Lampung, South Tangerang, Trenggalek East Java, and Bima Nusa Tenggara Indonesia, the study constructs three impact indicators: the welfare index, financial inclusion index, and social and spiritual index. The data are analyzed using the difference-in-difference (DiD) method, where the three impact indices are compared between the two groups of respondents in 2021 and 2022. We find that the CWLS empowerment programs improve the welfare and financial inclusion of beneficiaries but have no discernible effect on social and spiritual participation. However, the DID analysis reveals that the overall impacts of welfare, financial inclusion, and social and spiritual participation are not statistically different between beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries in 2021 and 2022. This study provides significant implications for policymakers and nadzir to enhance the impacts of CWLS on socioeconomic development and poverty alleviation. Abstract

This paper investigates the X-efficiency of fifteen commercial banks in Indonesia consisting of seven Shariah banks and eight conventional banks. This study uses three stages of data analysis: non-parametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach, t-test, and multiple regression method. The results show that in the period of this study, both Shariah and conventional banks in Indonesia have not reached the optimal level of efficiency. However, conventional banks obtain a higher level of allocative and total efficiency compared to Shariah banks. The inefficiency of Islamic banks is stemed from allocative inefficiency rather than technical problems. The bank’s X-efficiency is significantly influenced by size, rather than number of banking channels and staff costs. This study provides important implications for Shariah banking in order to improve X- efficiency and compete in the banking industry in Indonesia by focusing on the improvement of the combination of quality assets.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to evaluate the factors which influence banking customers' financial asset ownership. Using the pyramid of Maslahah framework, the study classifies the needs of banking customers into four levels: those for basic financial services (hajjiyat); for financial assets for security or as a precaution (darruriyat); for financial assets for investment (tahsiniyah); and those for financial assets for religious purposes. To answer the research questions, a binomial logistic model was applied and the primary data were collected using a questionnaire survey with 300 respondents in Indonesia. It was found that the pattern of ownership of financial assets follows the order proposed in the theory of the pyramid of Maslahah. The study also found that financial asset ownership for transaction needs was mainly influenced by the variables of income and credit and that ownership of such assets for security or precautionary needs was largely determined by life cycle variables. In addition, ownership for investment needs was strongly influenced by the level of education,  and for religious needs it was mainly determined by income levels and life cycle variables. The study findings provide important information for mapping the financial needs of Islamic banking customers. Abstract

Amidst the challenges of global climate change and increasing demands for sustainability, companies are expected to focus not only on financial aspects but also on non-financial aspects such as implementing environmentally and socially responsible business practices to support the assessment of corporate value in the eyes of investors. This study aims to analyze the impact of green investments and corporate social responsibility (CSR) on corporate value, as well as to test the role of financial performance as a mediating variable in energy sector companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) during the period 2019-2023. The research sample included 45 energy sector companies, but only nine companies met the criteria. The results revealed that green investments and CSR did not have a significant impact on corporate value, and green investments also did not affect financial performance. However, CSR was found to have a significant influence on financial performance. On the other hand, financial performance had no significant impact on corporate value. It did not act as a mediator in the relationship between green investment, CSR, and corporate value. These findings suggest that while CSR can improve financial performance, it is insufficient to increase corporate value without additional supporting factors directly. This study suggests that companies, particularly those in the energy sector, should prioritize environmental and social considerations in their operations. For green investments to support the company's value, companies must demonstrate measurable long-term benefits and align their sustainability efforts with stakeholder expectations. Furthermore, investors consider non-financial factors such as the implementation of tangible environmental performance and transparent CSR practices, thereby encouraging companies to adopt sustainability not only as a regulatory obligation but also as a strategic asset.
