Abstract

West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) is the third-largest tobacco-producing province in Indonesia. However, the dynamics of tobacco production tend to decline, one of which is due to its productivity and land area, which also tends to stagnate. Technology is one of the levers of productivity and the efficiency and effectiveness of supply chain management. The objectives of this research are to assess the level of technology adoption, analyze the factors influencing farmers' decisions to adopt technology, and develop policy recommendations based on the findings. This research uses mixed methods, namely qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative approach uses an in-depth interview approach and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with farmers and stakeholders of the tobacco industry. The quantitative approach uses the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method. The results showed that farmers who used tractors, ovens, tobacco pressing, power weeder, and combine harvester technology were 42%, 71%, 46%, 21%, and 2%, respectively. The results of PLS-SEM analysis showed that the variables of education and age had a positive and significant effect on the adoption of tobacco farmer technology. In contrast, the variables of length of farming and land area did not have a significant effect. The variables of land area, length of farming experience, and farmers' age do not significantly affect technology adoption. Based on the results of this study, several strategies to increase technology adoption for tobacco farmers are institutional strengthening to facilitate socialization and counseling related to technology, the establishment of financing schemes that are friendly to farmers, and the development of research and innovation related to appropriate technology to economic, social, cultural, and environmental aspects.

Abstract

The effect of rural development in reducing the poverty gap and economic growth has not been much analyzed in recent studies. This study examines the effects of rural development (as calculated by using the Village Development Index, VDI) on poverty and economic growth. Precisely, poverty is measured by the depth of poverty (as measured by Poverty Gap Index, P1) and poverty severity (as measured by Poverty Severity Index, P2) using the aggregate data at the district level in Indonesia. Understandably, many factors influence the effort to reduce the poverty gap in rural areas, and it can be started by improving rural economic development. The result of this study indicates that regions with the VDI categorized as “independent” and “developed” villages have the potential to reduce the depth of poverty and poverty severity in its areas and to increase economic growth. In contrast, underdeveloped and very underdeveloped regions in their VDI category experienced a more significant gap in the depth and severity of the poverty. This result implies that the Indonesian government must accelerate and improve the development of rural areas, especially in less developed regions. Thus, a better rural development status will attract more opportunities to grow rural economic activities and improve the community welfare.

Abstract

Teripang, trepang, timun laut, atau gamat adalah istilah yang diberikan untuk hewan invertebrata Holothuroidea yang dapat dimakan dan tersebar luas di lingkungan laut di seluruh dunia, mulai dari zona pasang surut sampai laut dalam terutama di Samudra Hindia dan Samudra Pasifik Barat termasuk Indonesia. Selain itu, Teripang juga  dipakai dalam bentuk segar atau kering dalam berbagai masakan dan dalam konteks budaya, jenis pangan ini (teripang) dapat dipakai dalam bidang pengobatan. Masyarakat pesisir Desa Kenebibi Kecamatan Kalkuluk Mesak Kabupaten Belu sampai saat ini belum memaksimalkan jenis pangan ini dalam memenuhi kebutuhan asupan gizi karena terbatas dengan jenis pengolahan. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan pengabdian ini dilaksanakan dengan tujuan meningkatkan pengetahuan keluarga berisiko stunting untuk maksimal memanfaatkan teripang baik dalam konsumsi keluarga maupun dalam meningkatkan ekonomi keluarga. Kegiatan dilaksanakan di Kantor desa Kenebibi Kecamatan Kalkuluk Mesak Kabupaten Belu pada bulan Oktober 2024 dengan melibatkan 30 kepala keluarga dan ibu keluarga dari keluarga berisiko stunting.  Kegiatan pengabdian menggunakan metode Penyuluhan dan Simulasi dengan tujuan dapat memantik pengetahuan siap dan ide peserta dalam mengolah jenis pangan taripang sampai ke bentuk usaha yang akan dijalankan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan bahwa semua peserta berhasil dilatih dalam mengolah jenis pangan teripang pasir dan semua peserta menyimpulkan bahwa hasil olahan yang sangat baik untuk dipasarkan adalah dalam bentuk olahan teripang kering.
