Abstract

This study investigates how students in the English Department at Mulawarman University use Twitter as an informal platform to improve their English communication skills. Unlike traditional classrooms, Twitter offers a relaxed, real-time environment where students interact in English through tweets, slang, memes, and interactions with classmates. Using a qualitative narrative research approach, data were collected from six students and one instructor through semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed three main findings: students learn English informally through daily practice and self-motivation; they adapt to a flexible communication style influenced by online slang and global discourse; and they benefit from peer interactions that provide feedback, vocabulary models, and confidence-building. This study concludes that Twitter functions not only as a social media tool but also as a dynamic space for authentic, self-directed, and culturally embedded language learning. Unlike previous studies that focus on the formal integration of social media in education, this research highlights the non-academic motivations driving meaningful engagement with English. While acknowledging limitations such as deliberate sampling and digital access, this study offers new insights into how digital platforms support socio-linguistic language development. The research recommends further investigation into long-term impacts and broader student populations to understand the educational value of informal digital learning environments.

Abstract

Despite the widespread shift to digital learning during the pandemic, limited research has examined how contextual factors influence ICT adoption patterns among EFL teachers in developing regions. This study investigates Information and Communication Technology (ICT) adoption among 247 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers in Kutai Kartanegara, Indonesia, using an extended Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) framework. The research addresses the critical gap in understanding technology integration patterns in post-pandemic Indonesian EFL education contexts.Using Structural Equation Modeling, the study examined core TAM constructs (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitude toward using, behavioral intention, and actual system use) alongside five extended constructs: digital self-efficacy, facilitating conditions, social influence, technology anxiety, and pandemic technology familiarity. Results revealed moderate-to-high ICT adoption levels, with video conferencing tools achieving the highest adoption rates, particularly Zoom, Google Meet, and WhatsApp for educational purposes. In contrast, AI-powered tools showed the lowest adoption rates, with limited integration in lesson planning activities. The extended TAM demonstrated superior explanatory power, accounting for 63% of variance compared to traditional models. All hypothesized relationships were supported, with perceived usefulness emerging as the strongest predictor of positive attitudes and digital self-efficacy significantly influencing perceived ease of use.Notable findings include persistent digital divides between beginner and advanced users, and the significant influence of pandemic technology familiarity on current adoption patterns, validating emergency remote teaching's lasting impact on educational practices. The study provides practical implications for differentiated professional development, infrastructure investment prioritizing reliable connectivity, and targeted interventions addressing confidence-building alongside technical training to enhance educational technology integration in developing regions

Abstract

This study aims to examine the phenomenon of code-mixing in the Indonesian pop song 'Kasih Aba-aba' by Naykila, Tenxi, and Jemsii, with a focus on the structural types and linguistic purposes of code-mixing in the lyrics. Employing a qualitative descriptive method and a content analysis approach, this research utilized a purposive sampling strategy to select this specific song as a rich case study due to its prevalent use of English-Indonesian code-mixing and its popularity on digital platforms. Line-by-line analysis of the lyrics was part of the research process, and each instance of code-mixing was categorized using Muysken's (2000) typology of insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization and its functions were interpreted using sociolinguistic frameworks (Gumperz, 1982; Hoffman, 1991; Poplack, 1980). Findings indicate that insertion is the most common kind of code mixing, followed by alternation and congruent lexicalization. These are employed to accomplish a variety of sociolinguistic goals, including emphasis, identity expression, prestige, and emotional personalization. English elements used for stylistic purposes represent global influence, young identity, and multilingual proficiency. The purposeful use of Bahasa Indonesia and English enhances the emotional tone of the lyrics and aligns with current linguistic trends in Indonesian youth culture. The results indicate that code-mixing in popular music acts as both a communicative and cultural strategy. This research adds to our knowledge of bilingual language usage in media discourse and has practical implications for discourse-based English training and the development of culturally relevant language curricula. The limitation of the study is that study only focuses on a single song, which limits generalizability. Therefore, future research is recommended to expand into cross-artist comparisons and to investigate audience reception.

Abstract

This study explores the challenges that pre-service teachers face when developing interactive video assessments, with a focus on the technological, pedagogical and psychological aspects involved. While interactive videos have been shown to increase student engagement, some pre-service teachers struggle to create them. Three English education students from Mulawarman University were purposefully selected for the study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions and analysed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed technical challenges like unstable internet and delayed AI. Pedagogical challenges such as teachers relied heavily on AI, and limiting creativity. Psychological challenges when participants did not trust the accuracy of AI or the grammar of AI-generated questions, necessitating additional scrutiny. Despite these challenges, the study showed that participants transitioned from passively accepting the AI's output to actively adapting and refining it. This demonstrates that, when teachers take ownership of the contextualisation of materials, interactive video assessments can be effective, provided they are supported by thorough training in digital pedagogy and AI literacy.

Abstract

Anxiety is a prevalent psychological factor that influences the learning process, particularly in language acquisition, where it can shape students’ confidence, engagement, and overall performance. In contexts where English is learned as a foreign language, anxiety is often linked to students' ability to navigate language learning challenges, affecting both their success and struggles in mastering the language. Understanding the extent of foreign language anxiety and its specific effects is essential, given its potential impact. This study investigates students’ anxiety levels, examines gender differences, and explores the relationship between anxiety and English achievement. A quantitative descriptive survey was conducted with 105 students in Samarinda, Indonesia, using the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCA) to measure anxiety and final semester scores to assess achievement. Data analysis using SPSS version 25 revealed that students experienced a high level of foreign language anxiety (M = 3.4459), with female students reporting slightly higher anxiety than males. However, the difference was not statistically significant. Correlation analysis showed a weak negative association (r = -.101, p = .306), suggesting that anxiety had little to no impact on achievement. These findings provide insights into foreign language anxiety in EFL contexts, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to create a more supportive learning environment and enhance language learning experiences.

Abstract

This study explored the teaching style of an English teacher at SMP IT Cordova Samarinda using Grasha’s Teaching Style Model (1996), which identifies six types: Expert, Formal Authority, Personal Model, Facilitator, Delegator, and their combinations. The model emphasized how teachers delivered content, interacted with students, and structured the learning environment. A qualitative case study design was applied, focusing on one teacher to gain an in-depth understanding of instructional practices within a real classroom. Following Creswell’s (2013) view, a single case can provide deep insights when purposefully selected. Data collection included classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of instructional documents. The teacher predominantly used Delegator, Facilitator, and Personal Model styles. These approaches promoted student independence, encouraged collaboration, and fostered a more active and competitive learning environment. The study highlighted that such methods helped meet diverse student needs and enhanced engagement. However, challenges were also noted, including the time-consuming nature of these styles and their limited effectiveness for students who relied heavily on direct teacher guidance. While the study's single-participant design limited generalizability, it still offered meaningful insights into the role of teaching style in Indonesian secondary education. The presence of the observer may also have influenced classroom behavior. In conclusion, the findings suggested that professional development programs should focus on varied experiential training to better support junior high school students. The study also recommended further research involving different subjects or educational levels to expand the understanding of effective teaching practices.

Abstract

Background: The use of gendered visual imagery in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) textbooks has raised concerns about perpetuating gender stereotypes and the potential effect on students' conceptions of gender roles. Despite the widespread use of mandated textbooks in primary classrooms in Indonesia, less is known about instructors' perceptions of gendered visual imagery. Methodology: This qualitative research employed a mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative and qualitative data collection and analytic methodologies. An investigation was conducted in Samarinda East Kalimantan to collect the perspectives of 41 teachers who teach English in elementary school regarding the gendered visual representations present in the mandatory EFL textbooks. Furthermore, 12 teachers were chosen to partake in exhaustive interviews to present more informed and profound perspectives. Findings: They merely focused on how to teach the materials rather than scrutinizing the gender bias represented through texts and visual images. The study revealed that a significant proportion of teachers (80%) believed that gendered visual imagery in textbooks was not impartial and could influence the gender roles of pupils. Furthermore, a significant majority (75%) said they often adjusted or avoided using these pictures in their teaching methods. The interviews highlighted the teachers' concern about the possible negative impact of these pictures on students' social relationships and self-image. However, they merely focused on how to teach the materials rather than scrutinizing the gender bias represented through texts and visual images Conclusion: The findings suggest that elementary school teachers in Indonesia know the potential negative repercussions of gendered visual images in EFL textbooks and have implemented measures to mitigate these effects. The study underscores the importance of incorporating diverse and inclusive visual materials into educational resources to promote gender equality and positive gender representations. This concept is new to them. They agree that gender equality needs to be addressed and discussed as part of the content in classroom practices to raise students’ awareness of gender bias. Originality: Previous studies have investigated the frequency and occurrence of gender bias in textbooks, found in images and texts. However, there is a lack of investigation into teachers' awareness of gender stereotypes in textbooks. This study enhances the existing corpus of literature by examining the perspectives of teachers on the use of gendered visual images in EFL textbooks in elementary schools in Indonesia. It emphasizes the importance of teachers and policymakers advocating for more inclusive educational resources and considering the impact of visual materials on students' gender perceptions

Abstract

This ethnographic study investigates the Haul tradition's execution in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, emphasising the procedures and challenges of preserving this significant religious and cultural event. The Haul custom- an Islamic observance that pays tribute to esteemed progenitors or saints, is of great spiritual significance; however, it is currently facing contemporary challenges, such as ethnic diversity and generational shifts. Betulungan, a native term that signifies cooperation and communal assistance, is the foundation of the Haul's prosperity in Samarinda. Betulungan's role in fostering collaboration among women from various ethnic backgrounds—Javanese, Banjar, Kutai, and Dayak—who are involved in the administration and maintenance of the Haul is further clarified in this study. The research employed a case study methodology, utilising data collected from five key informants chosen for their substantial contributions to the organization of the Haul within their communities. The neighborhood leader, a critical participant in organising community events, is identified as a key informant because he fosters collaboration and ensures inclusion in this multiethnic environment. The research, conducted through participant observation and exhaustive interviews, illustrates how Betulungan is a conduit for bridging ethnic divides and promoting interethnic collaboration in preparing food, rituals, and logistics for the Haul. The data indicate that Betulungan fosters a collaborative environment where women, regardless of ethnicity, unify to achieve a common spiritual goal, thereby preserving the Haul heritage and enhancing social cohesiveness. In response to the socio-cultural dynamics of a modernizing, multiethnic Samarinda, the Haul heritage has continued to evolve, with the culture of mutual assistance being crucial to its preservation. The research improves understanding of the substantial role those local cooperative behaviors play in conserving cultural and religious traditions among various groups.
