Abstract

This study explores the representation of ethnic oppression in R.F. Kuang’s The Poppy War (2018) using a qualitative literary approach. It focuses on three main objectives: (1) identifying indicators of ethnic oppression within the novel; (2) analyzing how these forms of oppression are portrayed through literary elements such as characterization, setting, and plot; and (3) examining the motivations behind Kuang’s engagement with this theme. The primary data source is the novel itself, supported by secondary materials including academic journals, interviews, and historical texts. The analysis reveals three dominant indicators of ethnic oppression in the novel: systemic marginalization, cultural erasure, and institutional prejudice. These are conveyed through narrative elements and key events involving marginalized groups such as the Speerlies. The findings suggest that Kuang uses the fantasy setting of The Poppy War to reflect on historical injustices and process personal and familial trauma rooted in real-world events. Through this lens, the novel serves as both social critique and historical reflection.

Abstract

The ideological and political agenda of different groups are often put forward by way of hate speech and intolerant messages towards members of different ethno-religious groups. In this context, religious education could play a key part in promoting more positive views about diversity. This article presents an investigation into the curriculum of existing Islamic Religious Education in four junior high schools in Solo, as well as teachers and students’ perceptions regarding religious diversity. The research results show that the curriculum lacks content that aims at co-existence and peace education. Also, around a third of the teachers and students reported intolerant attitudes towards different religions. The results were then followed up by a pilot project to develop the Islam-based Peace Education (IPE), which aims at building pacifist character in youth, through teaching mutual respect, non-violence, social justice, and co-existence, by using Islamic values derived from al-Qur’an andSunnah.

Abstract

Bilingual education in Indonesia increasingly emphasizes both linguistic competence and character development, yet limited research examines how international pedagogical models can be adapted to local contexts. This qualitative case study investigates the implementation of empathy-based teaching approaches inspired by the film Freedom Writers (2007) in three bilingual schools in Surakarta, Indonesia. Data were collected over 2 months (October - November 2025) through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and student reflections. Thematic analysis revealed five key outcomes: transformed classroom atmospheres fostering student voice, enhanced language proficiency through reflective writing, strengthened critical thinking via culturally relevant curriculum, and improved socio-emotional competencies. Despite challenges including time constraints and cultural adaptation needs, findings demonstrate that empathetic, student-centered pedagogy significantly enhances both academic and character outcomes in bilingual settings. This study contributes empirical evidence for integrating transformative pedagogical approaches within Indonesian educational contexts while respecting local values and bilingual learning objectives.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores how special education teachers (SLB) in Surakarta negotiate humanistic and personalized pedagogical approaches within increasingly standardized educational systems. Drawing on critical pedagogy theory and inclusive education frameworks, this research examines the tensions between transformative, student-centered pedagogical ideals (such as those popularized in cultural narratives like Freedom Writers) and the structural, administrative, and resource constraints faced by SLB teachers working with students with diverse disabilities. Through semi-structured interviews with five special education teachers from public SLB institutions in Surakarta, this study investigates how educators conceptualize authentic connection, individualized attention, and transformative learning for students with intellectual, sensory, and physical disabilities who often face compounded marginalization due to poverty and social stigma. The findings reveal significant gaps between pedagogical ideals and practical realities, including excessive administrative burdens, inadequate funding for adaptive materials, high student-teacher ratios, outcome-driven assessment pressures, and limited emotional support systems for teachers. This study argues that while humanistic education promises to transform marginalized students' lives, systemic barriers in Indonesian special education prevent teachers from fully realizing this vision. This research contributes to ongoing debates about inclusive education in developing contexts and offers implications for reimagining special education policy that prioritises teacher capacity, student dignity, and authentic learning over bureaucratic compliance.
