Abstract

Semiotics is simply defined as the sign-using to represent a mathematical concept in a problem-solving. Semiotic reasoning of constructing concept is a process of drawing a conclusion based on object, representamen (sign), and interpretant. This paper aims to describe the phases of semiotic reasoning of elementary students in constructing the properties of a rectangle. The participants of the present qualitative study are three elementary students classified into three levels of Adversity Quotient (AQ): quitter/AQ low, champer/AQ medium, and climber/AQ high. The results show three participants identify object by observing objects around them. In creating sign stage, they made the same sign that was a rectangular image. However, in three last stages, namely interpret sign, find out properties of sign, and discover properties of a rectangle, they made different ways. The quitter found two characteristics of rectangular objects then derived it to be a rectangle’s properties. The champer found four characteristics of the objects then it was derived to be two properties of a rectangle. By contrast, Climber found six characteristics of the sign and derived all of these to be four properties of a rectangle. In addition, Climber could determine the properties of a rectangle correctly.

Abstract

The present study is aimed to describe the development of an innovated learning for the disabled students in higher education. The development of learning innovation was performed by developing a learning model, that is what so-called Universal Design model (DUE). The method implemented to develop the model was Research and Development). This method constitutes several stages, among others: 1) needs analysis, 2) gathering information, 3) designing a product, 4) validating the product, 5) revising the product, 6) trying out the product, 7) revising the product, and 8) consolidating the product. The result of the research shows that the produc, in this case is DUE learning model, has met the criteria after going through several tests from the experts, thus valid.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to figure out how percentage bar supports students in solving percentages problems: 1) students are able to compute the part of a whole while the percentage is given; 2) students are able to compute a whole if its part and its percentage is given. The subject of this research is 22 fifth grade students. The study is conducted when students only have pre-requisite knowledge of fractions.According to the aims, we use Design Research as a method by developing a set of instructional activities which is exploring students’ knowledge of percentages. Besides, we apply some contextual problems – road repair and discount problems – based on Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. From those activities, students employ percentage bar to solve percentage problems. The collected data shows that the percentage bar can support students in solving percentage problems. However, some of them still have much struggle in solving discount problems.
