Abstract

This research discusses the representation of female masculinity in the television series The Killing Season 1. The main character, Sarah Linden, is a woman who does not exhibit traditional femininity but rather embodies masculine traits. This study aims to understand how masculinity is represented in Sarah Linden's character in The Killing Season 1. Utilizing John Fiske's semiotic theory, this research reveals the meanings embedded within the semiotic codes. A qualitative approach is employed, with descriptive analysis to interpret the findings. The analysis reveals the presence of masculine characteristics in Sarah Linden, such as no sissy stuff, be a big wheel, be sturdy as an oak, and give 'em hell. These masculine traits reflect ideologies including liberal feminism, anti-patriarchy, masculinism, and feminism, which assert that men and women possess equal capabilities. The study emphasizes gender equality and recognizes the positive contributions of all individuals, regardless of gender.

The term "mairil" generally describes an act of affection between fellow students. However, sometimes it also refers to junior students who have white, attractive, adorable physical characteristics, a face that looks like a baby face. Senior students often choose them as mairil partners. Meanwhile, the term "nyempet" is used to describe the sexual act of intercourse between male students. Generally, this is done by senior students towards their maiden partners. Mairil and nchempet behavior in the Islamic boarding school environment is the basic issue that the author will describe in this audio visual work. This film is constructed as a film with a suspense drama genre Wahyu's behavior is the basis for the creator to use the Kuleshov effect technique with the concept of visual storytelling. Another reason why this technique is applied is to present the point of view of the character Cholis who also plays an important role in the continuity of the story The artistic work process in making the film Wahyu (Revelation) begins with observation, development or developing story ideas, pre-production stages, production stages and post-production stages. This qualitative study collects data through interviews, focused group discussions, and documentation. The qualitative data analysis was carried out by combining data on the implementation of the Vlog Competition from the Tourism, Creative Economy and Culture Office of Banyuwangi Regency with data from FGD results with a sample of Banyuwangi film creators and data on cocoa tourism visits in Sempu District. Abstract

The development of interest in Japanese popular culture, especially cosplay and anime, among young people in Jember has shown a significant increase over time. This study aims to describe the development of cosplay culture in Jember and the factors that influence it. The research methods used are direct observation of cosplay events, interviews with cosplayers and event organizers, and analysis of cosplay community social media. Using Joseph Nye's soft power theory and Jean Baudrillard's hyperreality, this study found that the cosplay trend in Jember has become a medium for cultural expression and identity for young people, especially through various cosplay events and competitions held in shopping centers, tourist destinations, educational institutions, hotels, and cafes with events including Coswalk Competition, Cosplay Perform, JSong Competition, cover dance and sales of anime, manga, and game merchandise. The results of the study indicate the existence of hyperreality, namely cosplayers bringing to life the fictional characters they play, thus providing space for escapism and creativity. This study also found the role of cosplay as a form of Japanese cultural soft power that is accepted by the local community in Jember. Keywords: cosplay, Jember, Japanese popular culture, soft power, hiperreality

Abstract

The phenomenon of violent speech among Indonesian political elites increased significantly during the post-transition regime period of 2024, particularly on digital platforms that amplify the visibility of controversial discourse. This study aims to identify the linguistic patterns of verbal violence employed by political elites and to explain how these language strategies contribute to the construction of power relations in the post-truth era. The research adopts a corpus-based critical discourse analysis with Derrida’s deconstruction as its theoretical lens. The data consist of 142 public statements drawn from political speeches, media interviews, press releases, and posts on TikTok, X, and YouTube between January and July 2025. The analysis was conducted in three stages: corpus mapping using AntConc, thematic coding with NVivo, and binary opposition deconstruction to uncover symbolic strategies. The findings reveal three main categories of verbal violence: (1) mockery and personal insults through bodily metaphors and vulgar diction, (2) group stigmatization such as the dichotomy of “ordinary people” versus “global elites,” and (3) symbolic threats grounded in moral and religious legitimacy. These linguistic strategies are further reinforced by social media algorithms that prioritize provocative content, thereby shaping public opinion and deepening political polarization. This study contributes to the development of political linguistics in Indonesia by highlighting the interconnection between elite discourse, algorithmic amplification, and the construction of power within the post-truth context.

Abstract

Imperfect is a film directed by Ernest Prakasa and based on his wife Meira's book called Imperfect: A Journey to Self-Acceptance airing on December 19, 2019. Imperfect tells the story of a woman named Rara (Jessica Milla), an employee at a cosmetics company who doubts her body shape because she doesn't meet the beauty standards of others. The method used in this research is a qualitative research method using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory as the main theory and Bordwell's mise en scene theory as a supporting theory in analyzing Rara's character in the film Imperfect. The division of scenes is based on the mise en scene aspect and considers the physical changes in Rara's character as a comparison for changes in attitude and character.  This research identifies two forms different of Rara's character present in the 8 scene. Provides a deeper understanding of how visual elements in film, such as setting, costume and makeup, lighting, and staging, collaborate to construct a powerful concept of psychoanalytic character within a scene. The conclusion of this research reveals that mise-en-scene plays a pivotal role in shaping the perceived emotional Rara's character into audience. The demands of beauty standards dominate most segments in this scene. Rara's determination to make physical changes is supported by the mise-en-scene aspect. The results of the physical changes made Rara's career dreams come true. Physical changes and appearance also dominate Rara's character, becoming selfish and arrogant, thereby losing the people around her.
