Abstract

Abstract

Background: Adolescents is a vulnerable age group susceptible to mental health issues, particularly psychological distress, which includes symptoms of depression and anxiety. While physical activity is known to benefit mental health, its direct relationship with psychological distress in adolescents has shown inconsistent findings. Purpose: To analyze the relationship between physical activity levels and psychological distress in adolescents. Method: A cross-sectional design, involving 386 students from three high schools in East Kalimantan. Data were collected using questionnaires, adopting the Kessler Psychological distress Scale (K10) and the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ). Results: The majority of respondents (88.6%) were categorized as having high physical activity. Analysis revealed no significant association between physical activity levels and psychological distress (p = 0.802; OR = 1.141; 95% CI: 0.609–2.140). However, these results indicated a non-significant trend towards an increased risk of distress in the low physical activity group. Conclusion: No significant association was found between physical activity levels and psychological distress in adolescents. Nevertheless, a notable proportion of adolescents with low physical activity remains, warranting attention. Interventions to promote physical activity are still important. Keyword: Adolescents; Physical Activity; Psychological Distress.

Abstract

The phenomenon of the use of the Jolly Roger symbol, a pirate flag, in the anime One Piece by Indonesians during Independence Day in August 2025 gave rise to an interesting symbolic battle between representations of the people and the state. In this context, this article explores how popular cultural symbols can be used as a tool of visual resistance against state nationalism that is considered to be losing legitimacy, especially in the increasingly connected digital era. The Jolly Roger symbol, known as the pirate flag, is not only seen as a symbol of freedom in pop culture, but also as an expression of rejection of nationalist narratives that are considered "fake" or not representing the interests of the people. Using Roland Barthes's semiotic approach (denotation, connotation, myth) and Gramsci's and Stuart Hall's theories of cultural hegemony, this article analyzes the layered meanings of the Jolly Roger symbol in the Indonesian socio-political context. In this semiotic analysis, the symbol is understood not only as an image representing freedom or rebellion, but also as a tool to express dissatisfaction with narratives of independence and citizenship dominated by the state. Data obtained from social media posts (X/Twitter, TikTok, Instagram), memes, captions, and official statements were semiotically analyzed to see how this symbol is used to challenge the state's sole claim to the meaning of nationalism. The results show that this pirate symbol functions beyond aesthetic resistance; it also functions ideologically by creating space for alternative articulations of identity and nationhood. In a digital context, this symbol voices criticism of official narratives of independence and citizenship, opens up a crisis in existing hegemonic narratives, and creates a space for people to freely express their views and identities.

Abstract

Jember has long been recognized as a global carnival city through the renowned Jember Fashion Carnaval (JFC), yet its cultural landscape reveals far deeper tensions. The circulation of a notarized statement from the elected regent supporting sound horeg, despite a fatwa declaring it haram by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), marks a critical juncture in symbolic struggle over public space and moral authority. This conflict is not merely about noise or religious norms, but about contested claims over aesthetics, legitimacy, and cultural recognition. Employing a critical cultural anthropology framework, the article explores how grassroots sonic expressions confront elite aesthetics and institutional morality. Sound horeg emerges as a countercultural performance that challenges dominant narratives and reclaims auditory presence. The clash between religious fatwa, political populism, and popular sound culture reveals a fragmentation of authority in defining what counts as “legitimate culture.” This article underscores the urgency of reinterpreting voice and symbol politics in contemporary local society, arguing that such cultural frictions signal a broader crisis of representation and fragile legitimacy in post-reform Indonesian democracy.
