Abstract

This study aims to examine how Ma’had Aly Lirboyo implements epistemological decolonization in Islamic education through the preservation of pesantren traditions and their integration into the formal higher education system. The background of this research is rooted in the dominance of Western epistemology within national education systems, which often marginalize the Islamic intellectual heritage. This is a field research study using a qualitative approach, employing techniques such as direct observation, in-depth interviews with Ma’had Aly administrators and educators, and documentation analysis of institutional policies and curricula. The findings reveal that Ma’had Aly Lirboyo successfully preserves traditional pesantren methods—such as bandongan, sorogan, wetonan, and daurah ilmiah—while adapting them to a structured academic system through the Fiqh Kebangsaan curriculum. This strategy has enabled the development of an Islamic education model that not only maintains sanad (chains of knowledge transmission) and scholarly authority but also responds effectively to national and global challenges. Theoretically, these findings reinforce the discourse of knowledge decolonization by demonstrating that local systems of knowledge—rooted in tradition, spirituality, and social context—can form legitimate, autonomous, and globally relevant educational frameworks.

Abstract

This article examines the Policy of Integrating Islamic Science and Science in Islamic Universities. Policy of Integration of Science and Islamic Studies in Islamic Higher Education. In general, this policy is like the government's response to science development, which was born from the conflict between science and religion. This study uses a literature review approach by citing and reviewing reading sources according to the research focus. The results of this study indicate that the Policy of Integrating Islamic Sciences and Sciences in Islamic Universities has not shown the government's concern for the development of science. The integration policy through the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia following Minister of Religion Regulation Number 10 of 2010 concerning Organization and Work Procedures does not want to control the pace of scientific development. However, PTKAI's spirit of campus integration is not solely due to the policies of the Indonesian Ministry of Religion following Minister of Religion Regulation Number 10 of 2010 concerning Organization and Work Procedures, but rather the enthusiasm to continue scientific development. The policy of integrating Islamic knowledge and science in Islamic Religious Higher Education has not shown the government's concern for knowledge development.

Abstract

This study examines the Living Qur’an phenomenon and its role in shaping religious piety among elderly congregants in two religious groups in Kediri, East Java, Indonesia: Majelis Dzikrul Ghofilin and Sema’an Al-Qur’an Jantiko Matab. The Living Qur’an concept, as manifested in elderly congregations, represents the embodied and contextual practice of Qur’anic teachings in daily life, fundamentally contributing to individual and collective piety. Through fieldwork utilizing a qualitative methodology informed by Talal Asad’s concept of “discursive tradition,” this research employs participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentary analysis. The anthropological analysis focuses on identifying patterns in Living Qur’an practices among elderly congregants, with particular attention to symbolic reception and sensory engagement in religious practices. The research reveals distinctive manifestations of the Living Qur’an in each group. Majelis Dzikrul Ghofilin centers its practice on dhikr (divine remembrance), supplications, and contemplative engagement with Qur’anic verses, fostering spiritual connectivity and emotional resilience. In contrast, Sema’an Al-Qur’an Jantiko Matab emphasizes sustained communal Qur’anic recitation from dawn to nightfall, cultivating devotional practice through extended engagement with sacred text. These complementary approaches demonstrate the versatility of Living Qur’an implementations in enhancing elderly congregants’ spiritual well-being. This study contributes to the scholarly discourse on the Living Qur’an among elderly populations, presenting novel insights into Qur’anic reception and pietistic practices. Furthermore, it establishes a theoretical foundation for understanding religion’s role in shaping elderly worldviews while advancing methodological approaches to studying Qur’anic reception in Muslim communities.
