Abstract

This study is entitled "Tarekat and Philanthropy: Study of the Social Activities of the Al-Haqqani Naqsyabandiyah Congregation in Indonesia". The background of this case study is Sufism so far known as the esoteric dimension in Islam. This identification often gets Sufism considered to be mystical and ascetic. So far, the Sufis are seen as a group of people who emphasize individual piety (personal) rather than social piety. However, in contrast to the Naqshbandiyah Al-Haqqani Congregation, its students must go into the community and be active in social life. In terms of the formulation of the problem two questions can be drawn namely; First, what is behind the Naqshabandiyah Al-Haqqani Congregation is engaged in social and philanthropic activities. Second, What is the social activity and philanthropy of the Al-Haqqani Naqshbandiyah Order. Efforts to answer the problems in this study will be used field research methods, namely by digging field data and observing directly. This paper describes the social activities of the tarekat as the object of study. The results of this study indicate that there is a Naqsyabandiyah Al-Haqqani order which is active in social and philanthropy. The social activities of the Al-Haqqani Naqsyabandiyah Congregation are realized through institutions such as: HCNS (Hajjah Naziha Charitable Society), Rumi Café, Karem Food Drive, Rabbani Sufi Center and CV Sogan Jaya / Sogan Batik.

Abstract

This paper examined how to understand the texts of the Qur'an and Ḥadīth concerning the concept of Ahl al-Kitāb. The concept of the Ahl al-Kitāb becomes frequently debatable for there have been contradictions of the texts with other texts. To avoid contradictory understanding, it can be reached by way of compromising various existing texts. Through this method, it reveals that there is no contradictory theological understanding in the Qur'an and Ḥadīth about how Muslims should behave towards and treat Ahl al-Kitāb. From the texts it precisely shows an understanding that Muslims have to give respect, to recommend for doing good, and to acknowledge the existence of the Ahl al-Kitāb as long as each of them does not meddle in the affairs of each faith. The texts also produce a strong message that alludes to an inclusive teaching of Islam towards Ahl al-Kitāb.

Abstract

Some scholars think that people who take up religious beliefs are synonymous with being committed so that many people want to have tarekat. Even so, there are scholars like Badiuzzaman Said Nursi who think that tasawuf does not have to be committed. The statement of Sufism and sufi order according to Nursi is a way to recognize the nature of faith and the essence of the Qor’an to become a spiritual path under the guidance of the Prophet's sunnah. For Nursi, the spiritual activator is dhikr to Allah and continuous tafakkur to eliminate gloom, fear, and a sense of alienation from humans. The problem in this research is how the basic thoughts of Sufism Nursi and how the thoughts of Nursi about tasawuf without being committed. This study aims to determine the thoughts of Nursi about Sufism without any commitment. The results of this study are expected to provide a new understanding of the context of Sufism. This research is qualitative research that emphasizes library research. The type of approach carried out uses a socio-historical approach. Data collection was done by using the documentation method. Data analysis was performed using content analysis techniques. The analysis was carried out by proving the contents of the book, then analyzed and matched with existing data. This research also uses the method of interpretation (hermeneutic) so that Nursi's thoughts can be understood in a broader context and his childhood Nursi and his family adhered to the Nahsyabandiyah sufi order. Even so, Nursi stated firmly that he was not a follower of a sufi order. If the conventional view says that the nature path must be through sufi order, Nursi says: the nature path is sufficient through the Qur'an and following the behavior of the Prophet Muhammad. These characteristics can be used to describe al-Nursi's model of Sufism, namely sufism without sufi order. The results showed that Sufism without sufi order, according to Nursi, is someone who has sufism does not have to follow the teachings of a sufi order that has a teacher or murshid, only by always making dhikr glorifying the name of Allah, and always carrying out God's mandatory commands and sunnah so he will feel close God. I think Nursi thinking is something new that will make it easier for someone to be closer to Allah

Abstract

The tradition of khatm al-Qur’an (reading throughout the Qur’an) has been a religious cultural performance which existed since the beginning of pesantren tahfiz Sunan Pandanaran Yogyakarta. The term “khataman” in such pesantren is a term aimed at signifying the annual activities of the completion of some students in memorizing juz ‘amma, certain chosen surah from the Qur’an, and to those students who have completed memorizing the whole Qur’an. This paper aims at tracing the Prophet’s traditions related to the tradition of khatm al-Qur’an and analyzing the sanad and matn of the hadith. I argue that the hadith where the tradition relied upon it was in a degree of marfu‘, the chain of hadith was connected up to the prophet, though, there is a narrator which is classified as majhul al-hal. Nevertheless, the tradition of khatm al-Qur’an has been internalized by the majority of pesantren, including Pesantren Sunan Pandanaran Yogyakarta, where most of santris perceived it as a sacred inauguration and legitimation of their proficient of the Qur’an.

Abstract

The focus of this article is to examine the process of Gus Dur's indigenousization of Islam as a response to the increasing phenomenon of religious formalization. This topic is considered important because it is an effort to keep local culture and traditions down to earth. Apart from that, the indigenousization of Islam is also a contra-naration against the conservative understanding of Islam which states that indigenous Islamic rituals are regarded as bid’ah, shirk or khurafat that must be rejected. This was raised because according to muslim fundamentalists, the religious practices of indigenous Muslims are opposite of the practices of salaf as-salih which conform Islam totality or kaffah and authentic Islam. In addition, the indigenousization of Islam emerged as a response to the phenomenon of the formalization of religion which leads to the commodification of religion by making religion as a sale value. This writing employes socio-descriptive method which has come to conclusions as follows. First, the indigenousization of Islam which was initiated by Gus Dur was the result of Gus Dur's long struggle with praxis in nature. Second, Arabization with its’ formalization of religion has injured the diversity of the nation of the archipelago and opened up opportunities for the rise of ideological and political interests. Third, the common thread or root of the problem between conservative Islamic groups with their attitudes of formalizing religion and the indigenousization of Islam lies in the differences in understanding the values of Islamic normativity and culture.

Abstract

Abstract: There is an assumption that the tarekat makes its followers have a low work ethic and has an impact on poverty. This is because in the teachings of the tarekat there are teachings that tend to weaken the work ethic, such as the concept of zuhd in the second-century hijriyah which tends to be extreme leaving world life and the habits of the tarekat followers in making time-consuming zikr, thereby reducing time in fulfilling worldly life. This study examines the role of the Syāżiliyyah Congregation in East Darussalam Islamic Boarding School in Magelang on the work ethic of followers. This research is categorized as a field study and this research is qualitative using a phenomenological approach. Data was collected in three ways, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study stated that the work ethic of the followers of the Tariqa Sadziliyah in the Eastern Darussalam Islamic Boarding School in Magelang increased, the work ethic increased inseparably from the influence of the teachings, practices, and activities of the Syāżiliyyah Congregation. As for the increasing work ethic indicators, namely the intention to work, have a job, discipline, honest, responsibility, hard work, optimism, and trust. This research shows that the relationship of religion, especially the tarekat to the work ethic, does not cause tarekat followers to enter into the understanding of capitalism which tends to have the characteristics of hedonism by Max Weber's theory. However, the relationship of the tarekat with the work ethic has resulted in his followers being generous, humble, and loving one another.

Abstract

The Malay World is known as an area inhabited by gentle and peace-loving people. This happens because this area has a history of interacting with foreign nations and major world religions. However, this image of peace changed when extremist movements appeared in the name of salafi jihad. The main objective of this study is to analyze the Islam-based sociology of extremism based on literature sources. It consists of primary and secondary sources produced by extremists and religious authorities. The data from these two sources are analyzed critically and use a historical perspective to identify the details of this religious extremism's teachings. This study found that the religious extremism detected in the Malay world stems from the understanding of the concepts of takfir and jihad that deviate from the teachings of Islam. These two concepts have been brought to life by the neo-Khawarij (Salafi Jihad) movement that uses ICT, especially modern social media. This causes this religious extremism movement to be welcomed by some community members.
