Abstract

The using of HOTS questions to stimulate the learners’ thinking skills is essential to meet the challenge of 21st century. However, we know little about to what extent and what particular aspects of HOTS implemented in Indonesia English National Examination. Therefore, in order to fulfil the gap, the present study attempts to identify the use of HOTS-based questions and what particular skills appearing under HOTS category in English National Examination. We examine one package of each English National Examination from 2013 until 2018. We analyse 210 multiple-choice items in which each examination contain 35 items of reading comprehension. The items are analyzed quantitatively through content analysis based on the aspects of HOTS in Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. The researchers find that there is insufficient amount of HOTS questions in English National Examination. 157 items classified into the LOTS and only 53 (25.23%) items are classified into HOTS. The second finding is that the level of HOTS included in English National Examination 2013-2018 is only the level of Analyze. The Differentiating and Organizing are the subskills of the aspect of Analyze that are mostly included in all examinations. There is strong evidence for encouraging the test developers to provide adequate portions of HOTS-based items in English National Examination. Abstract

Southeast Asia provides a big market for “global” culture. Disney released Raya and the Last Dragon to seize the opportunity. The movie claimed itself as a Southeast Asian-inspired fantasy movie with diverse cultural images. This descriptive research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data from articles about Southeast Asian culture, Raya and the Last Dragon, and the movie script. This research focuses on finding the semantic-linguistic traits of transculturation within the movie. The semantic-linguistic transculturation within the movie was shown in 1) the names of the characters, 2) the use of mantra or magical chant, and 3) the use of American English informal contraction, slang, portmanteau, and compound words. Raya and the Last Dragon is a movie that shows linguistic transculturation through the use of the character’s name, words and phrases that relate to South Asian culture, mantras and magical chants, and the use of informal English contractions, slangs, portmanteaux, and compound words. The study of other linguistic transculturation levels will provide challenging goals for the other researchers.

Abstract

The development of artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as Perplexity AI has been shown to improve self-confidence, academic achievement, and motivation to learn. This study aims to determine the understanding, benefits, challenges, and application of generative AI (GenAI) in education. Mixed research methods were used, with surveys and interviews involving students from Jenderal Soedirman University and Widya Mandala University. Results showed that most students understood and recognized the benefits of Perplexity AI in lectures, despite concerns over ethics, human interaction, and technology management. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of in-depth learning about the principles and ethics of AI use as well as the need for clear standards to ensure the responsible use of AI in education.

Abstract

The Indonesian government recently introduced the Emancipated Curriculum (EC), also known as Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM), aiming to produce university graduates who are innovative, adaptable, and well-prepared for the demands of the modern workforce. Despite its significant educational reform, limited research has systematically and comprehensively explored the curriculum's complexities. This study adopts a rigorous methodology guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 framework to examine the challenges of EC from the perspectives of lecturers and students. A total of 25 carefully selected scholarly articles were analyzed, revealing key inductive themes. For students, challenges included limited cognitive engagement, difficulties in workplace adaptation, inadequate physical and technological infrastructure, and the complexities of curriculum implementation. For lecturers, issues involved unclear directions regarding EC, challenges in curriculum adjustment, and concerns over the curriculum's overarching paradigm. The findings underscore the urgent need for further developmental interventions to refine the emancipated curriculum and effectively address these challenges. Moreover, the study provides actionable recommendations for future research to enhance the curriculum’s implementation and impact.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relevance of the Pancasila student profile to the moral education values ​​in the Utawen poem, which is a culture in the Tegal Sari Mosque, Jetis District, Ponorogo Regency. This study uses a qualitative research type with an ethnographic design. The research data uses primary and secondary data. Primary data is obtained through a critical review of the Utawen poem text. Secondary data is obtained through scientific journals, books, and articles relevant to the research topic. Data collection techniques use interviews, observations, and documentation. Analysis uses Miles and Huberman techniques. The research findings show that the moral values ​​contained in the Utawen poem include: the moral value of consistency in principle, the moral value of honesty, and the moral value of courage to admit mistakes. These moral values ​​are implied through the character of Sidiq (trustworthy). The moral value of keeping promises and being responsible is reflected in the character of amanah (trustworthy). The moral value of liking to help and caring for others is implied in the obligation of zakat as a form of social care. The relevance of the moral values ​​of Utawen poetry to the profile dimensions of Pancasila students can be seen as follows: the dimensions of faith, devotion to God Almighty, noble character, and independence are implied in the shahada and the pillars of Islam. The dimension of mutual cooperation is implied through the teaching of paying zakat. The dimension of global diversity is implied in the character of the Prophet, who brought Islamic teachings to all people. The concept of tauhid (the oneness of God) can be used as a stimulus to develop critical thinking, because it invites humans to understand the meaning of life in depth. Through poetic expression, Utawen poetry also reflects creativity in conveying the message of da'wah through literary works.

Abstract

Metaphors in the movies often serve to deepen the narrative or highlight themes. The research aims to find out the types and meanings of metaphors used in Elemental Movie. The research applied the descriptive qualitative method and follows the interactive analysis model by Miles and Huberman, which included data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion. Based on data analysis conducted on Elemental Movie, it contains 30 expressions from forty types of metaphor according to Ullmann’s theory; those types of metaphor consist of concrete to abstract metaphors (40%), followed by anthropomorphic metaphors (33%), synesthetic metaphors (20%), and animal metaphors (7%). Based on the findings, the writer concludes that the type of metaphor that moves from abstract to concrete is the most frequently used in Elemental. It becomes the most frequently used metaphor since it has a crucial role across various media by making complex ideas more accessible through tangible experiences. The study suggests that English students and those interested in semantics should analyze metaphors in movies to deepen their understanding of metaphorical language.
