Abstract

Meaning is the liaison of language with the outside world agreed by the speakers so that they can understand each other. On May 7, 2020 through the President's Presidential Secretariat YouTube channel, President Joko Widodo gave a speech on the implementation of the PSBB. In the speech, the President said "berdamai dengan COVID". The phrase becomes polemic in the community. Some people consider the word “berdamai” is not suitable to use to deal with COVID. Some other groups say that the word “berdamai” in the phrase "berdamai dengan COVID" is the correct use. This paper discusses the meaning of the word "berdamai" in the phrase "berdamai dengan COVID". Determination of meaning is based on the context of the phrase "Berdamai dengan COVID" or contextual meaning. Based on the context of the situation, the word “berdamai” in the phrase "berdamai dengan COVID" does not mean mutually agreeing, or stopping to attack each other as found in the KBBI. Rather it means trying to adjust to new circumstances so that you can feel peace.

Abstract

Southeast Asia provides a big market for “global” culture. Disney released Raya and the Last Dragon to seize the opportunity. The movie claimed itself as a Southeast Asian-inspired fantasy movie with diverse cultural images. This descriptive research involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical data from articles about Southeast Asian culture, Raya and the Last Dragon, and the movie script. This research focuses on finding the semantic-linguistic traits of transculturation within the movie. The semantic-linguistic transculturation within the movie was shown in 1) the names of the characters, 2) the use of mantra or magical chant, and 3) the use of American English informal contraction, slang, portmanteau, and compound words. Raya and the Last Dragon is a movie that shows linguistic transculturation through the use of the character’s name, words and phrases that relate to South Asian culture, mantras and magical chants, and the use of informal English contractions, slangs, portmanteaux, and compound words. The study of other linguistic transculturation levels will provide challenging goals for the other researchers.

Abstract

This research aims to explore students' perceptions of the phenomenon of verbal toxic positivity in academic interactions, particularly between lecturers and students. Toxic positivity is a form of communication that conveys positive messages excessively without considering the emotional context of the recipient, which can actually have a negative impact on mental health. Using a descriptive quantitative method, data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 81 students of the English Education Study Program at STKIP PGRI Ponorogo. The research results show that the most dominant form of verbal toxic positivity is in the form of advice and affirmation. The main triggering situation is the continuous repetition of those statements by the lecturer, especially when students are experiencing emotional stress. The psychological impacts most felt by students are low self-esteem, feelings of depression, and the inability to express emotions in a healthy way. These findings emphasize the importance of faculty awareness, both as educators and academic advisors, in building empathetic and adaptive communication to create an academic environment that supports students' mental well-being. This study also recommends the development of communication and student well-being training to avoid the practice of verbal toxic positivity in the context of academics and academic guidance.
