STUDENTS’ PROBLEMS IN LISTENING COMPREHENSION AT FOURTH SEMESTER OF ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM PERADABAN UNIVERSITY Nurdiawati, Dede

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to obtain descriptive information about the problems and problem solving in learning listening comprehension. The researcher uses descriptive qualitative research and investigates the students? problems in listening comprehension at the fourth semester and the steps to overcome their problems. There are 23 students at the fourth semester of English Education Study Program Peradaban University in the academic year 2018/2019 as the sample. In collecting the data, the researcher uses questionnaire and interview as the instruments.The researcher finds the most problems faced by the fourth studentsare lack of concentration, native speaker speaking speed, unfamiliar words, and lack of effort to understand each word.The solution offeredto solve those problems are focus and concentrate while listening class, concentrate on what is heard, and write things that are important when listening to material spoken by native speaker; find the meanings of unfamiliar words, look at the dictionary to find out difficult words, check words that are not clearly heard in dictionary, memorize vocabulary, and read English text and listen to English audio; and familiarize the students with the rulers of pronunciation in order to help them hear the different forms of rapid natural speech and ask them to imitate native speakers? pronunciation. It concludes that learning information about the problems and problem solving at the fourth semester are because of the fact that their learning outcomes are still far from being standard. Therefore, problem solving in listening comprehension learning is expected to minimize the problems faced by students of the fourth semester of English Education Study Program Peradaban University in learning process so that they get satisfying learning outcomes.

Abstract

These objectives of this research are to investigate whether using YouTube animated movies as an alternative media enhances students? listening skills and to find out what attitudes the students have towards learning through YouTube animated movies as an alternative media. The participant was thirty-two students of Junior High School. The collecting data use questionnaire, observation, and interviews. The results were: (1) there were twenty-five students (78.13%) who strongly agreed that the students wanted their teachers to use more animated movies on YouTube as one of the alternative media in the classroom; (2) there were two students? expectation of the teachers? role in teaching and learning listening skill by using YouTube animated movies in the classroom: twenty-nine students (90.63%) who strongly agreed that the teachers became facilitators and mentors who helped students to learn when teaching and learning listening process took place in the classroom; and there were twenty-three students (71.88%) who strongly agreed that the teachers walked around the class to observe the process of the students? work assignment; (3) More than twenty-five students agreed that YouTube animated movies could help the students in studying English especially in learning listening; and (4) It also found that majority of the students had higher and good attitude in teaching and learning listening process by using YouTube animated movies. It can be concluded that the use of YouTube animated movies can enhance students? listening skills. Besides, it is recommended that YouTube should be considered as an effective instructional medium for enhancing the content learning of the students and as an important teaching resource in the classroom.

Abstract

Desa wisata Pandansari Paguyangan berpeluang untuk mampu menarik wisatawan tidak hanya wisatawan lokal akan tetapi wisatawan asing sehingga daya tarik tersebut bisa lebih dikenal tidak hanya didalam negeri akan tetapi di dunia internasional sebagai salah satu pesona Indonesia. Mitra kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah Kelompok Sadar Wisata Deswita Sari dibawah binaan Kepala Desa Pandansari. Adapun permasalahan prioritas yang dihadapi kelompok mitra adalah: (1) Kurangnya pengetahuan kelompok mitra akan pentingnya penguasaan bahasa Internasional, (2) Kurangnya pengetahuan kelompok mitra akan pentingnya berbahasa Inggris untuk berkomunikasi di dunia pariwisata, 3) Minimnya motivasi dan kesadaran kelompok mitra akan pentingnya penguasaan bahasa Inggris, (4) Kurangnya kemampuan berbahasa Inggris kelompok mitra, (5) Belum adanya fasilitas penyedia jasa pelatihan Bahasa Inggris, (6) Minimnya penguasaan teknologi yang dimiliki oleh SDM kelompok mitra, (7) Kurangnya promosi wisata sehingga wisata, (8) Belum memiliki akun sosial media yang update, dan (9) Kehidupan pariwisata daerah menurun dikarenakan Pandemi Covid-19. Pengabdian ini dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), serta Pelatihan dan Pendampingan yang intens. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian terdiri dari 4 tahapan, yaitu: Tahap Persiapan, Tahap Pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian, Tahap Monitoring dan Evaluasi, serta Tahap Keberlanjutan pasca kegiatan pengabdian. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah adanya peningkatan pemberdayaan mitra (peningkatan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris untuk wisatawan dan membuat konten promosi wisata digital di Kelompok Sadar Wisata Deswita Sari Desa Pandansari Kecamatan Paguyangan Kabupaten Brebes.

Abstract

The purpose of this service is to foster students' interest in learning English. The service team partnered with KKGMI Bumiayu sub-district by involving 60 MI teachers as trainee and mentoring them. The provided technology and innovation to partners are android application of English for Kids (EKI), teacher module books, and student worksheets as supporting media for English learning in the classroom. We are carrying out the stages of situation analysis, licensing and coordination as well as the needs analysis, in doing this service activity we carry out 6 times of training and mentoring with MI teachers and students in Bumiayu sub-district. The results show that from 60 training participants, 80% of them increased their abilities by 70% in understanding English vocabulary and using the aplication. This service activity is also fully supported by the Chairperson of KKGMI, KKMI, MI supervisors as well as several school principals and it expected that the abilities of teachers will increase and able to use digital learning media in adapting to the recent.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada masyarakat dengan judul “Pelatihan Toefl Trick dan Pemanfaatan Sumber Belajar Bahasa Inggris berbasis Web bagi Guru MI di Kecamatan Bumiayu” ini perlu dilaksanakan dikarenakan kondisi mitra pengabdian yang memiliki banyak permasalahan prioritas di bidang pendidikan, diantaranya: pengetahuan bahasa Inggris masih rendah; pengetahuan tentang teknologi informasi dalam pembelajaran bahasa Inggris masih rendah; para guru MI masih belum mengenal tes TOEFL dengan baik; minat dan motivasi untuk mempelajari bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa Internasional masih rendah; dan pemanfaatan sumber belajar melalui teknologi para guru MI masih rendah. Adapun tujuan pengabdian adalah memberikan kesadaran kepada para guru MI terhadap kemampuan mereka dalam menguasai bahasa Inggris sehingga bisa menjadi pendidik yang memberikan pembelajaran yang menyenangkan, serta memiliki metode pengajaran yang aktif, interaktif dan inovatif, mampu memahami dan menjawab soal tes TOEFL serta paham teknologi. Luaran pengabdian: 1. terdapat peningkatan peningkatan pemahaman TOEFl Trick sebesar 18,75%, dengan nilai pre-test 65,63% dan nilai post-test 84,37%; terdapat peningkatan kemampuan dalam mempersiapkan tes TOEFL, adapun hasil tertinggi test TOEFL peserta mendapatkan nilai 427 dan hasil terendah test TOEFL peserta mendapatkan nilai 360;  terdapat peningkatan pemahaman sumber belajar menggunakan web sebesar 20%, dengan nilai pre-test 68,82% dan nilai post-test 88,82%.

Abstract

Untuk membantu upaya masyarakat dalam meningkatkan pengetahuan masyarakat dibuat pelatihan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris dasar di desa sehingga mereka dapat termotivasi maksimal kedepannya mengingat pentingnya masyarakat umum terhadap pelatihan bahasa Inggris dasar untuk berkomunikasi di era digital. Terlebih adanya kesenjangan antara masyarakat (anak-anak di kota dengan desa) terhadap fasilitas yang dimiliki di kota dan desa. Pembelajaran bahasa Inggris bisa dilakukan dimana saja, hal ini bisa menjadi motivasi bahwa pembelajar bisa berlatih kemampuan berbahasanya dimana saja dan menggunakan media apa saja. Tujuan dari pelaksanaan PkM ini adalah meningkatkan motivasi belajar dan peningkatan pemahaman berbahasa Inggris masyarakat desa Sindangwangi melalui pelatihan yang dilakukan oleh tim PkM dari Universitas Peradaban. Adapun mitra kegiatan adalah Karang Taruna Surya Kusuma di Desa Sindangwangi Bantarkawung Kabupaten Brebes. Jumlah 20 peserta pelatihan dari kegiatan PkM yang terdiri dari anggota karangtaruna, beberapa pelajar, dan Ibu Rumah Tangga. Dan dapat disimpulkan bahwa hasil PkM yang dilakukan terdapat rata-rata 47% peningkatan pengetahuan peserta dalam pelatihan dasar berbahasa Inggris.
