Abstract

This study examines the role of Pancasila and Citizenship Education (PPKn) teachers in enhancing students’ national and state awareness at SMA Budisatrya Medan. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected from one principal, one PPKn teacher, ten students, and two staff through interviews, observations, and documentation. Results show that most students demonstrated a moderate level of awareness, with weaknesses in discipline, social responsibility, and consistency in applying Pancasila values. Globalisation, social media, low motivation, and limited support from family and school influenced low awareness. PPKn teachers played key roles as role models, facilitators, and motivators, using strategies such as contextual learning, project-based learning, discussions, and extracurricular activities to internalise national values. This study contributes to civic education by showing how contextual and participatory approaches strengthen students’ national identity. It recommends teacher training, digital-based civic projects, and stronger school–parent collaboration to reinforce nationalism in the digital era.

Abstract

The importance of instilling democratic values in education cannot be ignored given the increasingly complex global challenges, such as political polarization, social conflicts, and injustice. Through social studies learning, students are not only taught about democratic theories, but also given the opportunity to practice participating in the democratic process, such as through election simulations or group discussions on social issues. Thus, the purpose of this study is to explore how democratic values can be integrated in social studies learning in grade VIII, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of the approaches applied in the context of democracy education. The method used in this study is to use a descriptive qualitative research approach with informants from social science teachers, grade VIII students, principals, deputy principals and one of the homeroom teachers of grade VIII. The results of this study suggest that 1) Implementation of Group Discussion: in this case the teacher emphasizes the importance of group work to foster a sense of responsibility among students; 2) Educators use a variety of strategies to instill democratic values, including facilitating discussions that encourage students to express their opinions freely; 3) This involvement is related to their ability to practice democratic values, such as tolerance and respect for different viewpoints; 4) a supportive school environment, including the involvement of teachers and school leaders, plays an important role in the successful implementation of democratic values in the curriculum; 5) The effectiveness of the teaching used in integrating democratic values into the learning process; 6) Supporting and inhibiting factors: a) supporters, namely educators, students, facilities or infrastructure, and school culture; b) Obstacles are limited time and lack of motivation for students' learning.

Abstract

This study aims to understand the meaning of character education in Civics Education (PKn) learning at MTs Laboratorium UIN Sumatera Utara (UINSU) and the role of teachers in shaping students' character. Character education is an important focus in the Merdeka Curriculum and in reinforcing Pancasila values to produce a generation that is virtuous, religious, and has a sense of nationalism. This study uses a qualitative case study design with PKn teachers and students in grades VII–IX as informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, and then analyzed using the interactive analysis techniques of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014), with source and method triangulation to ensure data validity. The research results show that character education in Civics at MTs Lab UINSU is implemented in an integrated manner through active learning, group discussions, case studies, and attitude assessments that emphasize discipline, responsibility, honesty, and respect for diversity. Civics teachers act as facilitators, mentors, and role models in instilling character values, supported by policies and a religious, conducive school environment. However, challenges such as differences in students' character readiness, limited access to technology, influences from the outside school environment, and limited learning time become obstacles to the optimal internalization of character.
