Abstract

Community settlements on Kabung Island are formed by the environment, culture and characteristics of the population, the majority of whom are Bugis immigrants from outside West Kalimantan. Community settlements are located on the coast of the island and are oriented towards the sea as a place of life. This research aims to determine the characteristics of community settlement patterns by looking at the elements of settlement on Kabung Island. This research uses a survey method through observation and interviews. The composition of the settlement patterns of the Kabung Island community forms an elongated linear pattern following the coastline with settlements located on the sloping coastline and plantations located in the hills. The formation of this arrangement was caused by the activities of the community, most of whom worked at sea and was influenced by the topographic conditions of the island so that the community built on sloping plains. The spatial structure of Kabung Island is divided into highlands, lowlands or slopes, shallow seas and deep seas. The majority of people living on Kabung Island aim to earn a living, so that all areas on Kabung Island are utilized optimally to support community livelihood activities. The community culture that is still maintained today is the decorative variety that is the attraction of Kabung Island, namely the tradition of designing and moving houses.

Abstract

Kelenteng is a place of worship for Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, also known as the Tri Dharma Worship Place (TITD). The Kelenteng has its own characteristics that distinguish it from other places of worship. One of the most easily noticeable characteristics is on the roof of the Kelenteng. The roof of the Kelenteng generally uses the traditional Chinese roof shape. The shape of the temple building roof varies due to climate factors and the acculturation of its original regional architecture with local architecture. The diversity of roof shapes can also be seen from the principles of arranging the shapes found in the roof. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Research data collection was carried out by field observation and literature study. Field observations were carried out by documentation and sketching. The sketch results will be digitized to obtain the shape of the temple roof. The final result of this research is to obtain the typology of the roof shape of the Kelenteng in Pontianak City. The Kelenteng roof in Pontianak City consists of two types, namely a combination of hip and gable roof (Hsuan Hsan) and a gable roof (Ngang Hsan). The dominant roof type used in Kelenteng in Pontianak City is the Hsuan Hsan roof type with a curved roof tip.

Abstract

Architecture reflects the evolving needs of humanity, including within the spiritual context. Religion and belief system play a crucial role in shaping religious architecture, which not only serves as a place of worship but also embodies symbolic values and religious practices. The diverse religious traditions in Indonesia create a rich religious landscape, including in the architecture of places of worship such as monasteries (vihara). This research focuses on Vajra Bumi Kertayuga Monastery in Pontianak, a physical representation of the teachings of the True Buddha School sect. The evaluation of its architectural elements aims to assess the alignment between the building"™s design and the spiritual values of the True Buddha School sect, and how these elements influence the spiritual experiences of visitors. Theoretical approaches concerning architectural elements provide the basis for analyzing the harmony between philosophical teachings, worship practices, and the physical design of the monastery. This study is expected to offer valuable insights for the development and maintenance of monasteries, ensuring they continue to support optimal religious practices. The research employs a descriptive-quantitative approach using surveys to collect numerical data. Data was gathered through questionnaires distributed to members of Vihara Vajra Bumi Kertayuga to evaluate the perceived importance of architectural elements from the perspective of True Buddha School adherents. Respondents were selected randomly using a simple random sampling technique to represent a broader population. Collected data was analyzed statistically to identify patterns and relationships in perceptions regarding the alignment of the vihara's architectural elements with its teachings. The findings indicate that the architectural elements of Vihara Vajra Bumi Kertayuga"”including interior layout, facade, ceiling, flooring, columns, doors, windows, walls, and stairs"”hold varying levels of importance. Generally, respondents rated the interior layout and facade as the most crucial in creating a religious atmosphere conducive to worship for True Buddha School adherents. Among the 31 respondents who worship at the vihara, the interior layout, facade, and ceiling were identified as playing the most significant roles in supporting worship activities. Flooring, columns, windows, and walls were considered moderately important, while doors and stairs were deemed to have lower significance. Respondents also highlighted that the form, ornamentation, size, and color of architectural elements significantly contribute to creating a religious ambiance and supporting worship, whereas the materials and textures of these elements were perceived as less critical.

Abstract

A retreat is an activity that involves withdrawing from daily routines to a quiet and safe place, where one can deepen one's spirituality and gain a better understanding of oneself, others, and God. In the Catholic tradition, retreats play an important role in nurturing faith through prayer, reflection, and discussion. However, the retreat facilities in the Archdiocese of Pontianak are not commensurate with the growing number of Catholics. Out of a total of approximately 738,000 Catholics, only 14 retreat houses are available. As a result, most retreat activities are conducted in places not specifically designed for such purposes, thereby diminishing the quality of the spiritual experience. The objective of this design project is to create a retreat area with facilities that can support and accommodate the spiritual activities of Catholics in the Archdiocese of Pontianak. The design method follows R. Whitaker's eight-step process, including problem identification, needs analysis, concept synthesis, and design evaluation. The approach used is a functional approach, involving analysis of space, users, activities, and inter-space relationships. The design resulted in eight building masses, with the chapel as the central structure, surrounded by participant accommodation facilities, a convent house, staff quarters, a dining hall, an educational area, and an open communal space. Vegetation was incorporated into the design as both a natural buffer and an element that enhances the cooling and aesthetic appeal of the area.

Abstract

Early childhood (0-5 years) is a golden age period in children's growth and development. During this period, developmental delays can have an impact on children's motor, language, social-emotional skills, as well as their ability to interact and follow rules. Kindergarten plays an important role in providing appropriate stimulation to prevent these delays. Al-Irsyad Al-Islamiyyah Kindergarten, located in Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan, is a formal educational institution that instills Islamic values with the main objective of “instilling a love of the Qur'an”. The design of this kindergarten uses the architectural sensory aspect approach, which stimulates five main senses: vision (Visual), auditory (Auditory), tactility (Tactility), olfactory (Olfactory) and taste (Haptic). The design results in a building mass with a building facade dominated by yellow color that gives a cheerful impression. There are two floors, the first floor functions as a learning area with the application of the center learning method which includes religion, social, science, preparation, and physical-motor classes and the second floor is used for supporting spaces for kindergarten activities and a meeting hall. The design of the kindergarten aims to encourage the involvement of children's senses in recognizing to love the Qur'an and make the values of the Qur'an as a guideline in the kindergarten design and is expected to provide a variety of learning environments that support children's development in accordance with the objectives of Al-Irsyad Al- Islamiyyah Kindergarten Ketapang Regency.
