Abstract

This research aims to determine the level of reduction in BOD and COD in household wastewater after the filtration process and to determine the efficiency of the filter media in reducing BOD and COD in sewage. The research was conducted in Bilebante village, Central Lombok Regency, NTB. The method takes three wastewater samples at different locations before and after the filtration stage. The results of the research show that the COD concentration in domestic wastewater before going through the processing process using filtration media obtained a result of 63 mgl/L, then at the filtration stage using plastic bottle media, the result was 34 mgl/L with an efficiency value of 46%, and at the filtration stage using activated carbon media, a value of 12 mgl/L was obtained so that the resulting efficiency value was 64%. The results of the BOD concentration in domestic wastewater before going through the processing process using filtration media obtained an initial result of 1.6 mgl/L; then, at the filtration stage using plastic bottle media, the result was 0.6 mgl/L with an efficiency value of 62 %. At the filtration stage using active carbon media, a value of 0 mgl/L was obtained, with an efficiency value of 100%. This research concludes that wastewater is safe to use, whether for watering plants or other things because there is a decrease in levels of COD and BOD that meet quality standards.

Abstract

The waste problem is a never-ending problem, so it is everyone's responsibility to find solutions to the existing waste problem. According to data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry in 2022, waste in Indonesia is predominantly composed of organic waste, accounting for 41.27% of the total waste. The purpose of this study was to determine plant growth by utilizing used barrels as a vertical composter for organic waste, which is useful for providing small-land farming, and to determine the quality of liquid and solid fertilizers. The method used was a laboratory experiment. The results of the study were as follows: the number of mustard green leaves was 15 cm, and the bok choy leaves were 13 cm. The total height of the mustard greens was 40 cm, and the bok choy was 20 cm. The length and area of the leaves continue to increase by around 0.2 cm or more per day. The highest nutrient content in both compost and liquid fertilizer is P2O5 in Gegelengan Village, 4.223% in compost, and 5.4% in Kediri Village in liquid fertiliser, while the lowest is the N-Total content of 0.5% (compost) and 1.2% (liquid fertilizer). The research results obtained from the initial soil, solid organic fertilizer and liquid organic fertilizer met the quality standards based on the Decree of the Minister of Agriculture No. 261/KPTS/SR.320/M/04/2019.

Abstract

The quality of river water is influenced by natural factors and human factors. For humans, the river becomes a place to carry out various activities. The type of research used is an experiment and the object of the research is the water of the Babak River, West Lombok Regency which is processed using a filtration method with a simple filtration system from PVC pipes designed with a filter media arrangement, namely zeolite with a thickness of 5 cm, silica sand with a thickness of 15 cm, activated carbon with a thickness of 10 cm, filter foam with a thickness of 5 cm. This study aims to determine the effects of river water quality testing before and after filtration, as well as the effectiveness of the filter media in reducing pollutant levels. The parameters tested are pH, TSS, TDS, COD, BOD, DO, and Total Coliform. Testing was carried out at the Environmental Laboratory of the Mataram Environmental Engineering College. The test results showed that the water from the Babak River did not meet the standards for clean water. The laboratory tests revealed that the water content value exceeded the quality standards for Class III, as specified in Government Regulation No. 22 of 2021, particularly for the BOD and DO parameters. Therefore, further testing was necessary. According to the filtering results, the effectiveness value of the filter media in the upstream part of the river was 35%, in the middle part was 40%, and in the downstream part was 33% for the BOD parameter. For the DO parameter, the effectiveness values of the filter media in the upstream, middle, and downstream parts of the river were 43%, 58%, and 64%, respectively. Filtration can be a medium to reduce BOD and DO levels, making it a renewable alternative that can be used for other water sources.

Abstract

Clean water plays a crucial role in public health and environmental sustainability, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas that still rely on springs as a water source. The Sayang-Sayang Spring in Mataram City is utilized by the community, but its water quality is potentially affected by anthropogenic activities in the surrounding area. This study aimed to comprehensively evaluate the water quality of Sayang-Sayang Spring using the Water Quality Index (WQI) approach and determine its suitability as a clean water source. Water samples were collected in August 2025 and analyzed for physical, chemical, and biological parameters in accordance with Minister of Health Regulation No. 32 of 2017. The Weighted Water Quality Index (WQI) was calculated by determining parameter weights using the Delphi method. The analysis results showed that most physical and chemical parameters, such as temperature, TSS, TDS, pH, BOD, DO, nitrate, and ammonia, met clean water quality standards. However, COD and total phosphate values exceeded the established threshold, and microbiological parameters showed a total coliform content of 240 MPN/100 mL. A WQI of 90.20 indicates excellent water quality. However, the presence of organic matter, nutrients, and coliforms limits the use of this spring as untreated drinking water. This study confirms the effectiveness of the WQI as a water quality assessment tool and supports the sustainable management of the spring from anthropogenic pressures.
