Abstract

In the dynamics of a state, any change can happen through a social movement as an initial stage.  Studies about it have been conducted since the 1940s. Nowadays, as the shift of the era involves communication technology, the model of the social movement has changed as well. Collectivity dominated the social movement in the past, but connectivity is more prominent nowadays as the network society era emerges. The purpose of this research is to explore the social movement in the network society era through an Instagram account, @ketimbang.ngemis.yogyakarta along with the message reception among the Instagram users. Using Stuart Hall’s theory of message reception, this study employed snowball as the technique sampling. After analyzing five posts on @ketimbang.ngemis.yogyakarta Instagram account and having an interview with eight informants, there were two conclusions. It is found that there is a shift in the model of social movement. In the past, social movements were dominated by demonstrations, in which a group of people gathered in a particular place, and relied on oratory skills. Meanwhile, at present, many social movements have made use of social media, one of which is Instagram. The photos in Instagram are used to show marginalized groups which can attract sympathy, empathy, and attention of social media users as an initial stage to the social movement. Moreover, the social media users tend to be a negotiated code type in the reception of social movement message.

Abstract

The existence of Afghanistan that dubbed The Golden Cresent is the birthplace of two global terrorist groups namely the Taliban and Al-Qaeda. Nearly 70% of drug activity in Afghanistan has been strongly controlled by Taliban terrorist groups since 2007. Using narcoterrorism and non-traditional security threat conceptual frameworks, this article explains the dynamics of the development of opium production and trade in Afghanistan, the Taliban track record in the opium trade in Afghanistan and the opium trade as a non-traditional security threat in Afghanistan. This article uses descriptive analysis of data obtained from books, journals, and mass media. In this study, there are two important points that obtained. First, the opium business which is a source of funding for the Taliban group is one of the main causes of the continuing acts of terrorism in Afghanistan and a source of various transnational crimes. Second, the opium trade and terrorism are non-traditional security threats that occur due to a combination of opium trade and acts of terrorism which have implications for the internal and external areas of Afghanistan.

Abstract

Abstract: After his inauguration as the 8th President of Indonesia, President Prabowo decided to increase the number of ministers, deputy ministers, and ministerial-level officials. Under Prabowo’s administration, there are 48 ministries, a significant increase compared to the previous government. Naturally, this expansion corresponds to a larger state budget allocation to support ministerial performance. However, through Presidential Instruction No. 1 of 2025, President Prabowo mandated budget efficiency in state and regional expenditures (APBN-APBD) for 2025. Though some remain unaffected, several ministries and state agencies have reduced their budgets in response to this instruction. This situation underscores an apparent inconsistency between these two early policies of Prabowo’s administration. This study aims to analyze this inconsistency using a qualitative case study approach. The findings indicate that although President Prabowo’s policies appear contradictory, they are driven by specific motives, namely accommodative-compromising interests and transactional politics in the expansion of ministries, as well as the need to allocate a substantial portion of the budget to his populist initiative: the free nutritious meal initiative. Abstract

This study examines four decades of Papuan diaspora efforts to campaign for Papuan independence in the Pacific region. It analyzes campaigns beginning in the 1980s with figures such as John Otto Ondawame and Andy Ayamiseba, later continued by leaders like Benny Wenda. Through a historical approach, the research investigates how these pro-independence campaigns spotlight the controversial cession of Papua to Indonesia in 1969, subsequent political violence, human rights violations, and the role of Melanesian solidarity. The study argues that the Papuan diaspora has been instrumental in internationalizing the Papuan issue and rallying support from a wide range of actors, including state officials, traditional leaders, and civil society groups. Findings reveal that, despite inconsistent backing from state actors, the sustained diaspora campaign has significantly raised regional and global awareness of Papuan independence. This research fills a gap in literature by highlighting the impact of diaspora activism on the Papuan independence process.
