Abstract

Dental and oral health problems are still not become a priority among Indonesian societies. According to the Basic Health Research data in 2018, oral and dental health problems are still quite high up to 57.6%. Oral and Dental health problems are the issues which are prone to be found in infancy that will disrupt the process of a proper growth and development. Most of Indonesian society in general and many mothers in particular do not understand correctly how to care the toddlers' teeth and to keep it healthy with a good quality. The Mother School of ?Bunda Sholihah? is a local community empowerment organization whose main program is to increase the capacity of mothers in optimizing child development. This activity is designed to train the mothers to have the ability to care for children's dental health and play an active role in educating the wider community. The method utilized in this community service activities were training and educational practices. The training that has been carried out consists of education in lectures, two-way discussions and role analogies, followed by assignments in the field. The number of participants in this activity was up to 45 members from the foundation of the Bunda Sholihah society in the area of Kasihan, Bantul with a total full and active participation which reached 75.5%. This activity is carried out in groups, in once a week for 4 weeks activity, so that the total implementation was 4 meetings. This program involved the service-voluntary team as the educators, members and administrators of the foundation of Bunda Sholihah School by using modules that have been prepared by the service-voluntary team. The activity partner was the Mother School of Bunda Sholihah, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The results of this program showed a significant increase in the level of mother?s knowledge in infant and toddler dental health (p <0.05) including mother?s personal motivation and consideration regarding early dental examination in toddler.

Abstract

Introduction: Mouthwash is an antibiotic-based product that fights bacteria, oral infections, cleans, deodorizes, refreshes the oral cavity, and is an antiseptic. Carrageenan is a class of galactan polysaccharides found as an intercellular matrix substance in red algae or algae from the Rhodophyta class. Carrageenan is also known to contain secondary metabolite compounds, namely flavonoids, alkaloids, triterpenoids, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Aim: The aim of the study is to determine flavonoid levels and cytotoxicity assay of carrageenan gel mouthwash. Methods:  The samples of this study were carrageenan gel mouthwash and fibroblast cells. The samples used was divided into cell control groups (negative) and carrageenan gel mouthwash groups with concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 4%. Results: Total flavonoid levels in carrageenan gel mouthwash preparations with 4 different concentrations have flavonoid levels with a 0.5% concentration of 45.42%, 1% concentration of 69.77%, 2% concentration of 65.09%, and 4% concentration of 38.97%.  The cytotoxicity test showed cell viability of more than 60% at various concentrations. The highest cell viability in the carrageenan hydrogel mouthwash with a concentration of 2% at 80.57%. Conclusion: The carrageenan hydrogel mouthwash that has the highest flavonoid content at a concentration 1% was 69.77% and the carrageenan gel mouthwash was non-toxic to fibroblast cells.

Abstract

Background: Root canal bacteria produce many virulence factors which are responsible for endodontic pathological states. Bacteria are assumed to utilize energy from bacterial cell metabolism activity for producing these virulence factors. Propolis extracts are commonly reported to have antibacterial abilities against dental pathogens. The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible correlation between bacterial proteolytic and metabolism activities under the treatment of ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP).Method: The 0.00125%; 0.05%; 0.1%; 0.2%; 0.4%; and 0.8% ethanolic propolis were prepared for recovery rate confirmative procedure, proteolytic, and metabolism activity assay, with 2% of chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX) was used as a positive control. The bacteria were cultured in brain heart infusion (BHI) media after EEP treatment. Bacterial suspension was initially prepared in broth culture dilution with BHI media, followed by the gelatin liquefaction measurement for proteolytic assay. Phenol-red and arginine dehydrogenase enriched media for observing both carbohydrate and arginine metabolism activities, respectively, in the clinical Enterococcus spp. and E. faecalis ATCC 29212.Result: The recovery rate of the bacteria was not terminated after several EEP treatments. Proteolytic activity of the bacteria was likely decreased in several EEP treatments. EEP tended to affect the carbohydrate and arginine metabolism of the bacteria in certain fashions. Conclusion: This study suggested that the EEP treatment affected both proteolytic and metabolism activity in negative regulation tendencies.
