Abstract

Olea ferruginea has been used to treat skin ailments, as well as kidney and ocular problems for a long time. The current study was designed with the aim of investigating and scientifically validating its widespread use. Chloroform, n-hexane, and ethyl acetate were used to assess the antibacterial, hemagglutination, and insecticidal properties of O. ferruginea roots. Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were among the bacterial strains selected for assessing antibacterial activity. The results showed that ethyl-acetate (EtOAc) extract (56%) and chloroform (CHCl3) extract (56%) showed the widest zone of inhibition against K. pneumonia, while n-hexane extract (13.4%) had the lowest zone of inhibition against P. aeruginosa. All three extracts remained inactive against M. luteus. During hemagglutination activity, the CHCl3 and EtOAc extracts, when used at different concentrations, only agglutinated the AB−ve and O+ve blood groups, respectively, while the n-hexane extract strongly agglutinated the A−ve and B−ve blood groups at different concentrations. The plant extracts were also checked for insecticidal activity against Rhizopertha dominica. The results also revealed the high mortality rate of CHCl3 extract (70%) against R. dominica as compared to other extracts. The aforesaid activities suggest that the roots of O. ferruginea have excellent medicinal viability and contain a wide variety of agglutinins and lectins, as shown in this study.

Abstract

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted the traditional pedagogical educational system worldwide. The story of Pakistan is also not different from that of the rest of the world. Pakistan’s higher education institutes were closed for classes due to the outbreak. Some universities started the virtual education system, and it is critically important to assess the behavioral intentions of university students toward online education during the COVID-19 pandemic in Pakistan. This is the first study investigating students' responses to online education during the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, an online survey was conducted to obtain the students' responses from the higher institutions providing online classes during COVID-19. The results were evaluated using multivariate analysis and descriptive statistics. It was observed that there is a significant difference between male and female students concerning the positive consequences of COVID-19 on students. According to the findings, the students' intentions for online education are more concerned with saving time to complete the degree program. Higher education institutions should also provide online educational opportunities to students besides traditional physical modes. Online educational interventions will be helpful for students during unavoidable circumstances like political instabilities, natural disasters, viral disease outbreaks, etc. to complete degrees and diplomas. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2024-SIED1-02 Full Text: PDF

Abstract

Educational supervision should be conducted for various reasons one of them is to improve teachers’ perfomance as well as to improve students’ learning and quality of education. This is a comparative study of Indonesian and Pakistani school; Madrasah Ummul Quro At-Tarbawiyah Indonesia and Dar-e-Arqam School Bawalpur Punjab Pakistan. There are three research focuses, namely (1) how is the educational supervision implemented in those schools? (2) how effective is the implemenetation of educational supervision in those schools? (3) what are the problems and solutions of the implementation of the educational supervision. This study adopted a descriptive qualitative approach with interviews, observation and documentation as data collection. The results show that the director of Madrasah at Madrasah Ummul Quro At-Tarbawiyah Indonesia implemented educational supervision by using group technique through 3 activities- a monthly meetings, weekly meetings and trainings. through these forms of activity, the results are obtained in the form of positive changes from the teachers which also indirectly affect the effectiveness of the learning activities carried out so as to obtain optimal results through students’ achievements. The obstacles faced are related to the teacher's internal condition so that the alternative is by giving summons, providing motivation, and the final action is in the form of teacher transfers. Menwhile, in Dar-e-Arqam School Pakistan, head office monitoring visits implemented the supervision by monitoring visit and training session (physical and online), reports, and performance conducted monthly and in the end of semester. The head office then made the decision and guidelline for the improvement.

Abstract

Many studies have examined how written corrective feedback (WCF) can raise English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ understanding of language concepts. However, not much is known about how students’ perceptions and preferences could influence the effects of WCF. This study examined how Secondary School Certificate (SSC) students and teachers in Pakistan International School, Saudi Arabia, felt about WCF in writing classes. It aimed to identify the WCF aspects of the target language the students preferred. A questionnaire survey was distributed to 30 SSC-level EFL students and 10 teachers at the school who participated voluntarily in the study. The findings revealed that the students had sympathetic perspectives despite having preferences for WCF. They mainly believed that WCF might help them enhance their language knowledge and writing abilities. Through WCF, they learned what to avoid and how to write better. The teachers also found WCF helpful in enhancing the basic understanding of the target language. The findings showed that the students and teachers believed direct WCF to be the most effective technique for improving the former’s writing abilities, followed by indirect strategies such as underlining errors or providing codes. The research was considered relevant and pertinent as it addressed diverse aspects of WCF.

Abstract

The hotel industry in Pakistan encounters continuous challenges, such as elevated personnel turnover, variable service quality, and diminishing engagement levels, which impede its growth potential despite its substantial contribution to the national GDP. This study investigates the influence of transformational leadership (TL) on employee performance (EP) and job satisfaction (JS), highlighting the mediating effect of employee engagement (EE) via a dual mediation model.A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed, collecting data 151 employees from hotels and resorts in Pakistan by stratified random sampling. Data was gathered using structured questionnaires that incorporated validated instruments, such as the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), and adapted measures for work satisfaction and employee performance. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS and AMOS, employing descriptive statistics, reliability assessments, correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling (SEM) to investigate both direct and indirect impacts. The findings validated that transformative leadership positively affects employee engagement and job satisfaction, hence improving employee performance. The dual mediating role of engagement and satisfaction underscores the psychological mechanisms by which leadership enhances employee outcomes in the hospitality industry. The results indicate that hotel managers ought to develop transformational leadership behaviors to strategically enhance staff engagement and happiness, consequently improving service quality and operational performance. This study enhances the leadership literature by offering empirical insights into the psychological mechanisms that mediate the impact of transformative leadership on employee outcomes, particularly within a non-Western hospitality context.

Abstract

Considering the importance of regular exercise and a healthy diet in protecting against cardiovascular disease and CVD. This way the research aimed to assess the Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease in Aged of 40-70 Years Adults and their Association with Dietary Intake and Exercise Methods: In this cross-sectional study conducted from May 2023 to April 2024 among adults aged 40-70 years living in District Peshawar. The participants´ dietary intake, physical activity, body mass index, fat mass, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, and serum lipid profile were analyzed in the current study. A Questionnaire was used to assess physical activity and a structured 24-hour food-recall questionnaire was used to assess the participants´ dietary intake and exercise or physical activity was recorded on two separate days. Results: A total of 320 individuals were enrolled in the study. All persons had complete participation, filling out two separate 24-hour food-recall questionnaires. The number of females was 160% and similarly, the males were 160%. Most of them were married, had an education level less than high school, in physical activity most of the higher-aged people were not involved remained in rest conditions, and were living in urban regions. Their dietary intakes of were contained regularly based on a balanced diet. The vegetable intake was also not proper.  Based on age groups, they were divided into five groups marital status, education level, based on region, physical activity, and dietary information were properly recorded. Observing variables (age, gender, physical activity, and daily intake of food groups) showed that more physiological risk factors for CVD revealed that daily intake of a balanced diet, and regular exercise had a significant association with having physiological risk factors of CVD. Based on the current study, it is concluded that most middle-aged (50-70 years) aged people in urban areas, had one to four physiological risk factors for cardiovascular disease and daily intakes of carbohydrates and protein were higher than dietary reference intakes for adults. Conclusion: We also found that the relationship of low physical activity with physiological risk factors for CVD was more substantial than the intake of different food groups. It is also observed that the females had more risk factors for CVD than the males. The people of Peshawar must change their lifestyle of exercise and diet to reduce this main health issue of CVD.
