Abstract

Previous studies have reported that second language (L2) learners filter non-native L2 sounds through their existing native or first language (L1) sounds when learning L2 sounds. The degree of similarity between L1 and L2 sounds can predict the ease of acquisition of non-native L2 sounds. In the context of English language learning in Indonesia, most learners are likely to speak two languages before they learn English at school; Acehnese is not wituout any exception. As a result, they have larger phonemic inventories to rely on when learning English sounds. This study seeks to investigate how Acehnese-Indonesian bilinguals perceive five sets of vowel contrast in English (i.e., /ɪ/ - /iː/, /æ/ - /ɛ/, /ʌ/ - /ɑː/, /ʊ/ - /uː/, and /ɑː/ - /ɔː/). A special focus is given to their perception of English vowel contrasts that are new, similar, and identical to Acehnese and Indonesian vowels. A group of 31 high school students (N=31) from an Islamic boarding school in Aceh participated in this study. An AX test comprising repetition and minimal pairs of English vowel contrasts in CVC word contexts was randomly presented to the students. The data were analyzed by comparing the means of each vowel pair followed by a general linear model statistical analysis and interpreted based on speech perception and production models. The findings indicate that the Acehnese-Indonesian bilinguals discriminate the vowel pairs /æ/ - /ɜː/ and /ɑː/ - /ɔː/ better than the /ɪ/ - /iː/, /ʌ/ - /ɑː/ and /ɑː/ - /ɔː/ pairs. The vowel pairs in which both vowels are novel to Acehnese and Indonesian were moderately discriminated compared to the pairs in which one vowel is similar in both Acehnese and Indonesian. It can be said that students perceived pairs with one vowel similar to Acehnese-Indonesian better than pairs with both vowels or one vowel novel in Acehnese and Indonesian. The findings reported in the paper are expected to inform pedagogic practices, particularly in the development of materials for the teaching of English pronunciation. English teachers in Aceh may incorporate Acehnese words that have similar sounds to English while emphasizing the novel sounds which are absent from the Acehnese vowel system.

Abstract

AbstractIndonesian students who learn in Australian university and has an Indonesian driving licence are eligible to drive in Australian road. For the state of Victoria, the students can drive in the Victorian roads for six months after arrival without needing to convert their licence to Australian licence. However, Indonesian students may not well aware of the road signs used in Victorai due to different sign system between Indonesia and Australia. This study aims to learn how well Indonesian student in Australia understand the various road sign when they drive the Victorian road. The study used participant observant as its method in which the participant experience the phenomenon firsthand. The results indicates that the road sign used in Vcitoraian roads, even though massive, are relatively easy to be understood. The road signs are comprehensive and inclusive of all types of raod users including cyclist and pedesntrian. Colour coding of the road signs resemble those used in the traffic light which makes them intuitive even for drivers with non-Australian licence. Keywords:Road sign, Indonesian students, Victorian roads__________________________ AbstrakPelajar Indonesia yang belajar di universitas Australia dan memiliki SIM Indonesia berhak mengemudi di jalan Australia. Abstract

Abstract Collaborative learning is an important approach in improving the quality of vocational higher education in the era of globalization. This study aims to analyze the role of collaborative learning in improving student achievement at the Aceh Barat State Community Academy. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, this research involved in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation studies with student and lecturer participants from three D-II study programs. The results showed effective implementation of Project-Based Learning, Problem-Based Learning, and Team-Based Learning models in different study programs. Collaborative learning is proven to improve academic achievement with an increase in average GPA by 0.35 points and an increase in practical skills by 22%. In addition, there were significant improvements in soft skills: communication (28%), teamwork (35%), and problem solving (31%). The main supporting factors include institutional policy support and lecturer readiness, while the main challenges include time constraints and the diversity of student backgrounds. This study concludes that collaborative learning plays an important role in improving the quality of Community Academy graduates, but requires implementation strategies tailored to the context of vocational education. Keywords:Collaborative Learning; Vocational Education; Student AchievementAbstrakPembelajaran kolaboratif menjadi pendekatan penting dalam meningkatkan kualitas pendidikan tinggi vokasi di era globalisasi. Abstract

Foreign language learners tend to approximate the quality of non-native vowels to their existing vowel systems. This phenomenon becomes more complicated in learners who already have more than one vowel system in their linguistic repertoire. When learning English, Acehnese-Indonesian speakers are likely to already have two other vowel systems, Acehnese and Indonesian. Thus, the quality of English monophthongs produced by these speakers may resemble the equivalent of Acehnese and Indonesian monophthongs. This study compares the quality of English monophthongs to equivalent Acehnese and Indonesian monophthongs produced by Acehnese-Indonesian speakers. A total of 29 students from a Modern Islamic Boarding School in Aceh participated in this study. The students were recorded producing nine English, 11 Acehnese, and seven Indonesian monophthongs embedded in target words produced in a carrier sentence. The study found that the nine English monophthongs were produced at an approximate quality to either Acehnese and/or Indonesian monophthongs. In some cases, the English vowel was produced similarly to both the equivalent vowels in Acehnese and Indonesian. In other cases, the English vowel was produced more similarly to either Acehnese or Indonesian. The findings of this study provide insights into how Acehnese-Indonesian learners filter English vowels through their existing L1 and L2 sounds and allow for a better understanding of this phenomenon via existing conceptual models. The findings also point to the often-ignored influence of other languages in a speakers repertoire on the learning and production of a new language.

Abstract

Aceh reported 1,987 cases of illegal financial activities between November 2024 and May 2025. This study examines the levels of digital skill and digital safety among Gen X, Gen Y, and Gen Z in the context of online fraud. A total of 300 Acehnese respondents aged 17–60 years participated in the study. Data were collected through an online survey using a questionnaire distributed via Google Forms. The data were further analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Kruskal–Wallis test in SPSS version 22. The results showed generational differences in digital skills and digital safety. Gen Y achieved the highest scores in both domains, followed by Gen Z with slightly lower results. At the same time, Gen X consistently reported the lowest. Across all groups, digital safety scores lagged behind digital skill scores. Strengthening digital safety awareness is therefore crucial to reducing vulnerability to online fraud.

Abstract

Internet use in Indonesia continues to increase across all age groups, including the elderly. However, limited digital skills make the elderly particularly vulnerable to hoaxes and digital crimes. In Aceh, this issue is especially concerning, as the province was identified among the top three regions with the highest hoax dissemination in 2019. In response, the Indonesian Anti-Slander Society (Mafindo), through its Tular Nalar program, aims to provide digital literacy education to vulnerable groups, including the elderly. This study explores the communication strategy employed by Mafindo Aceh in implementing the Tular Nalar Lansia program in Aceh. Guided by Charles Berger’s Planning Theory and Hafied Cangara’s communication strategy model, the study adopts a qualitative case study approach to offer a contextually relevant analysis. Data were gathered through interviews with the Mafindo Aceh Coordinator, two facilitators, and three elderly participants, along with non-participant observations and document analysis. Findings reveal that although the program was implemented in a structured manner, several weaknesses remain, such as the lack of localized research, inadequate participant selection, and limited evaluation mechanisms. The study underscores the need for communication strategies that are inclusive, culturally sensitive, and tailored to the elderly’s abilities to enhance the impact of digital literacy initiatives.
