Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic is a situation where students are responsible and independent in their learning. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Minister of Education and Culture decided to switch teaching and learning activities in the classroom to an online system. This study aims to determine the level of self-directed learning independence in speaking class and the influencing factors. This study was designed as descriptive quantitative research using Likert scale questionnaires and interviews. The subjects of this study were students of SMAN 06 Bengkulu Tengah. Data analysis was carried out using the formula proposed by Sudjana to determine the percentage of students' scores. The results show that more than 64%, or half of the students, have fairly high levels of self-directed learning in the speaking class. Based on the findings and discussions, as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic, the use of online learning in educational practice has gone well because students already have a fairly high level of independence.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of the Webtoon application as a learning medium and to examine students’ perceptions of its use in reading comprehension skills of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 6 Bengkulu Tengah. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques consisting of observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects included one English teacher and eight eleventh-grade students who were selected through purposive sampling. The findings indicate that the use of the Webtoon application as a reading learning medium has a positive impact on students’ reading comprehension skills. Webtoon can increase students’ interest, motivation, and engagement in the learning process. Visual support in the form of images, character expressions, and storylines helps students understand the reading content, identify main ideas, comprehend new vocabulary, and follow the storyline coherently. In addition, students showed very positive perceptions of the use of Webtoon because the learning activities became more interesting, enjoyable, and less monotonous. However, this study also identified several challenges in using Webtoon as a learning medium. These challenges include limited internet access, which occasionally disrupted students’ ability to access the application; limited storage capacity on students’ devices, which prevented some students from installing the application; and students’ tendency to focus more on visual elements than on the reading text itself. Nevertheless, these challenges did not significantly hinder the learning process, as they could be addressed through clear instructions, continuous guidance, and effective classroom management by the teacher. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Webtoon application is an effective, relevant, and practical learning medium to support students’ reading comprehension skills at the secondary school level.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study investigates the ability of EFL students in translating opinion articles from English-language digital newspapers and identifies the translation strategies they employ. Translating opinion texts is considered challenging due to the use of persuasive language, idiomatic expressions, and cultural nuances, which require both linguistic competence and strategic decision-making.This research employed a descriptive quantitative design involving 30 students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Islam Negeri Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu who had completed at least one translation course. Data were collected through a translation test using an opinion article from The Jakarta Post and a questionnaire based on Baker’s (1992) taxonomy of translation strategies. The students’ translations were evaluated using Nababan’s (2012) Translation Quality Assessment, focusing on accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The results show that students’ overall translation ability is at a moderate level, with an average score of 59.63. Most students are categorized as fair (50%), followed by good (37%), poor (10%), and excellent (3%). Among the assessment aspects, accuracy is the most problematic, while acceptability and readability are relatively better. The findings indicate that although students can produce natural and understandable translations, they still face difficulties in conveying meaning accurately, especially in handling abstract ideas and complex arguments. In terms of strategies, students tend to use meaning-oriented approaches, particularly paraphrasing, followed by generalization and loan words. In conclusion, students demonstrate moderate translation competence but need improvement in accuracy, deeper text comprehension, and the use of varied strategies. Keywords: EFL students, translation ability, translation strategies, opinion articles.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component in learning English as a foreign language, as it supports students’ abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. However, many junior high school students experience difficulties in acquiring sufficient vocabulary due to monotonous teaching methods and limited exposure to engaging learning media. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effect of using the TikTok application on students’ vocabulary mastery. This research employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test. The population of this study consisted of eighth-grade students of SMPN 5 Bengkulu City in the academic year 2024/2025, with class VIII G comprising 33 students selected as the experimental group through purposive sampling. The treatment was conducted by integrating TikTok videos containing English vocabulary materials into the teaching and learning process over six sessions. The data were collected using vocabulary tests and analyzed using statistical analysis. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ vocabulary mastery after being taught using the TikTok application. The findings indicate that TikTok is an effective and engaging digital learning medium that can enhance students’ vocabulary acquisition and learning motivation. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers integrate social media platforms such as TikTok into vocabulary instruction to create more interactive and meaningful learning experiences.

Abstract

ABSTRACT English speaking skill development is often hampered by limited exposure to authentic language and low student self-confidence. Although movie is recognized as an effective learning medium, research on students' perceptions of movie-watching as a natural learning process is still limited. This study aims to explore the perceptions, experiences, and aspects of speaking skills developed through the habit of watching English movies. This study used a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation of 16 fourth-semester students of the English Language Education Study Program at UIN Fatmawati Sukarno Bengkulu who have good speaking skills. The study participants were selected using a purposive sampling technique, namely students who have good English speaking skills based on academic grades and oral communication skills. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The results showed that 100% of participants had a positive perception, viewing this habit not merely as entertainment, but as a deliberate self-directed learning strategy. This habit significantly improved micro-skills, especially vocabulary enrichment and pronunciation, through exposure to comprehensible input and shadowing techniques. In contrast, the development of macro-skills such as fluency and self-confidence is conditional. Improvement in these aspects is highly dependent on students' willingness to transform passive input into driven output through active practices, such as self-talk or creating vlogs. It was concluded that English movies are an effective pedagogical catalyst, but successful holistic development of speaking skills still requires active learning strategies and learner autonomy.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is an essential component of English learning because it supports students’ reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. However, many students still have limited vocabulary mastery due to the use of conventional teaching methods that rely on memorization and translation. Therefore, innovative learning media are needed to enhance students’ vocabulary learning. This study aims to determine the effect of using the Assemblr Edu app on the vocabulary mastery of Eighth Grade of Junior High School 20, Bengkulu City during the 2025–2026 school year. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design. The research sample was selected using purposive sampling and consisted of an experimental class and a control class. Data were collected through vocabulary tests pretest and posttest. The experimental class received instruction using the Augmented Reality (AR)-based Assemblr Edu app, while the control class received conventional instruction using printed picture media. The data were analyzed using an independent samples t-test with SPSS version 27. The results show a significance value (Sig., 2-tailed) of 0.003, which is less than 0.05 (0.003 < 0.05). Thus, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It can be concluded that the Assemblr Edu app is effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery and can serve as an alternative learning medium in English language instruction.
