Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how EFL students interpret implicature in memes, more specifically those that contain gender representation. A total of 30 undergraduate students majoring in English were used as the respondents. They were asked to fill out a questionnaire containing 7 memes which contain representations of men and women. Considering that memes are multimodal constructions as they are commonly made up of a combination of texts and images, the interaction between these two were also investigated to see how they were able to assist the students in interpreting the hidden meaning behind the memes. The findings revealed that a lot of the students were unable to properly deduce or comprehend the implied meaning regarding gender representation even though they felt that the texts and images did indeed help them in understanding the memes. It was found that they mostly interpreted the memes explicitly. This shows that they still lack pragmatic competence overall. Therefore, it was suggested that language teachers pay more attention to the teaching of implicatures, especially in memes.

Abstract

This research explores the role of animated films as a medium for addressing social issues, particularly discrimination, with a focus on the film “Elemental” (2023). Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzes discriminatory actions and their impacts on the three main characters: Barnie, Cinder, and Ember. Drawing on Dovidio and Esses’ (2010) theory of discrimination and Ayón's (2015) concept of effects, the research highlights parts of the film depicting discrimination and its physical and non-physical consequences. The result of the current study shows that different types of discrimination were portrayed in the movie through explicit and implicit actions as well as institutional and cultural biases. These findings indicate that animated films can effectively convey information about discrimination to various audiences, especially children, in a creative and easily understandable manner. This reaffirms that animated films serve not only as tools for ideological communication but also as agents of social change. The study also dissects the negative impacts of discrimination on the mental health and family functions experienced by the main characters. Through the analysis of discriminatory actions presented in dialogue, settings, and actions in the film, the research provides a profound understanding of the main characters' experiences in facing discrimination. In conclusion, this research reinforces the importance of using animated films as a tool for voicing social issues.

Abstract

Abstract

Before using medicinal plant products, quality control is required to determine their quality and consistency. Yacon leaves (Smallanthus sonchifolius) in preclinical trials have pharmacological effects to lower postprandial glucose with enhydrin as the marker compound. This study aimed to develop and validate a TLC-Densitometry method for determining enhydrin in Yacon leave extract. The stationary phase was TLC plates of silica gel GF254, while a mobile phase was the mixture of chloroform:hexane in the ratio of 10:1 was selected for the chromatographic system. Then, the TLC separation was followed by densitometric analysis at 210 nm. The method was validated in terms of linearity, accuracy, precision, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantitation (LOQ), and found to be linear, with a correlation coefficient (R2) 0.9998. The LOD and LOQ values calculated from the calibration curve were 80.57 and 244.1µg/mL, respectively. The method also exhibited acceptable precision, with relative standard deviation values lower than 3%. The accuracy of the method was evaluated based on the recovery percentages, and found to be within an acceptable range (97–107%).
