Abstract

This research investigates the impact of Non-digital Gamification (NDG) techniques on students' math achievement, focusing on Fractions. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the study involved 100 primary school students in Perak. Two groups were formed: the control group, which followed traditional teaching methods, and the experimental group, which experienced NDG learning approaches. The findings indicate that students using NDG perform better in math (fractions) assessments compared to those using conventional methods. This study provides empirical evidence supporting the efficacy of NDG in teaching Fractions. The results underscore the potential for educators to innovate and enhance gamification tools, particularly in mathematics, contributing to educational advancements aligned with the goals of the Malaysian Ministry of Education.

Abstract

E-learning practices and the competency in assessment should facilitate one’s academic performance. The main purpose of this study is to explore the degree of influence of e-learning practices and competency in assessment on academic achievement of students. This study is a quantitative approach using survey method involving the process of data collection through the administration of constructed instruments. The population of the study involves student teachers from the three selected universities in Selangor and Perak. Sample selection is drawn using random sampling technique. A total of 460 student teachers are selected. The questionnaire for e-learning practices is adapted from OLES (Renee, 2011) and the competency in assessment comes from Zahari (2018). The structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis is used to test the hypothesized relationship. The results show that e-learning practices, knowledge in assessment, skills in assessing, and attitude in assessment significantly influence students’ academic achievement. E-learning practices emerge as the strongest predictor of student achievement, with a significant standardized regression coefficient of 0.39. This is followed by skills in assessing (0.27), knowledge in assessment (0.09), and lastly attitude in assessment (0.08). The core findings of the study have some implications for higher education and practice, measurement and theory development, and future research.

Abstract

The aim of the current research was to validate the Malaysian version of the mathematical knowledge scale based on the Ernest framework. The participants include 100 teachers from Kelantan, Malaysia. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with principal components analysis and varimax rotation was conducted. This research determines the number of factors through eigenvalues greater than one and frames the structure of the scale through factor loading. The value of the eigenvalue and factor loading are considered in this research to frame and develop the structure of the scale. Furthermore, the reliability of the scale was tested with Cronbach’s alpha. The results showed six factors on the scale explaining 67.39% of the variances. A total of 26 items with factor loading greater than 0.60 were determined for the scale. The structure of the scale was as three items in the first factor, two items in the second factor, five items in the third factor, four items in the fourth factor, 10 items in the fifth factor, and two items in the sixth factor. Furthermore, the reliability of the scale was 0.958. This research concluded that the scale was internally consistent in measuring the teacher’s mathematics knowledge.

Abstract

Cancer is a chronic disease that causes patients and their caregivers to face various challenges throughout treatment and care. This study aimed to develop a counselling-based self-wellbeing model for informal caregivers of childhood cancer patients in Malaysia. This study employed the design and development research (DDR). The first phase involved needs analysis using a systematic literature review and semi-structured interviews of nine caregivers of childhood cancer. The second phase involved two methods: nominal group technique (NGT) and interpretive structural modeling (ISM). The third phase involved evaluating the usability of the model through the Fuzzy Delphi method (FDM) with the agreement of seven experts. This study successfully developed a counselling-based self-wellbeing model for informal caregivers of childhood cancer patients in Malaysia. This model has 12 components consisting of: i) financial; ii) career; iii) knowledge related to management and care of child cancer patients; iv) emotional management and care; v) spiritual; vi) cognitive and rationalization; vii) social relationships; viii) roles of counsellors in helping parents; ix) spouse and family relationships; x) physical; xi) communication; and xii) facilities. This model is proposed to be used by counsellors, especially who serve in health institutions to help parents who have children with cancer.
