Abstract

Traditional medicine is an alternative in medicine because of the minimal side effects and low cost. One of the spices that are widely grown in Indonesia and used for traditional medicine is white turmeric rhizome. White turmeric rhizome has a chemical content such as curcumin which can be used as an anticancer. The function of white turmeric rhizome as an anticancer is not selective and may interfere with the normal cell function that actively performs mutation such as seminiferous tubule cells can cause antifertility effect. This study aims to find out the antifertility effects of white turmeric rhizomes in the testis. This paper uses a literature review by searching through PubMed for the last 10 year studies published between 2014-2024. Based on the results of the literature study, it can be concluded that there was an antifertility effect of white turmeric rhizome.

Abstract

Background: Metal pollution increases along with increasing industrial development. Exposure to copper in large quantities can cause kidney and liver damage. Curcuma zedoaria has benefits as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferation, anticancer, and antimicrobial. Curcumin which contained in white turmeric rhizomes in previous studies was used as a nephroprotective variation. Objective: This study is used to know wether white turmeric rhizome (Curcuma zedoaria had a nephroprotective effect with exposure to CuSO4 pentahydrate. Methods: This is an experimental study by designing post test only control group design. The sampling is using simple random sampling technique. Male white wistar rats are divided into six groups; normal control, control of white turmeric (45 mg / 200 g), control of CuSO4 pentahydrate, and co-treatment group (curcumin for 14 days followed by CuSO4 for 5 days). Results: Data were analyzed using One Way test. For group 4 (preventive group) serum urea creatinine level was not different from group 1 and 2 (p greater than 0.05) with mild histological structure damage. However, differences were obtained (p less than 0.05) in Groups 3, 5, and 6. Conclusion: The dose of 45 mg / 200 g white turmeric extract showed a percentage decrease in serum creatinine urea level and mild histological damage to kidney tissue.

Abstract

Long-term hyperglycemia is associated with various organ damage. One of these damages is Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). One of the potential natural products that may improve this impact is Surf Redfish. Hence this study aimed to investigate the antidiabetic and liver protection effects of Surf Redfish in some diabetic male Mice. This study was an experimental study that used 25 male mice grouped into control, standard, Surf Redfish Extract-I (100 mg/ kg BW), II (200 mg// kg BW), and III (400 mg/ kg BW). This study evaluated the blood glucose level (before and after induction, third, sixth, ninth, twelfth, and fifteenth days) and histology study of liver tissue. This study showed that the Surf Redfish ethanol extract significantly decreased blood glucose levels every day for fifteen days (P-Value < 0.05). This extract also showed a significant decrease in vacuolated degeneration after fifteen days of extract administration (P-Value). Hence, it can be concluded that the most effective dose of Surf Redfish extracts in this study was 400 mg/ kg BW to decrease blood glucose level and width of vacuolated degeneration after fifteen days of administration.
