Abstract

This research examines Indonesia's economic strategy in navigating simultaneous engagement with two major economic blocs, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and BRICS, specifically analyzing the relevance of the OECD for Indonesia after BRICS membership amidst the dynamics of economic growth of OECD countries. This research aims to analyze the potential of Indonesia's economic strategy through a hedging concept approach within the framework of BRICS membership and accession to the OECD. Using descriptive-qualitative method based on literature study and secondary data, the patterns of cooperation and economic performance of the two blocs are analyzed. The results show that engagement with BRICS does not diminish the strategic role of the OECD, BRICS offers opportunities through market expansion and access to alternative financing, while the OECD remains vital as a partner to promote structural reforms and improve national competitiveness.

Abstract

The foreign aid program through capacity development projects by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which addresses water and sanitation issues in Pakis Kembar Village, Malang Regency through the IUWASH program, is perceived as less effective in constructing global environmental norms at the local level. Therefore, this research aims to measure the extent to which the process of constructing and disseminating global environmental norms at the community level has progressed and to identify the current status of norm construction. Employing the norm life-cycle concept, the study will examine how the stages of global environmental norms can be socialized and internalized through norm entrepreneurs in Tegal Pasangan Hamlet, Pakis Kembar Village, Malang Regency. The use of ethnographic methods with thematic ethnographic data analysis techniques is deemed relevant, given that the primary focus of the research is on individual or community behavior, which is closely influenced by local culture and other immaterial aspects such as norms and ideas. Overall, it is evident that there has been no significant change in the habits of the community, thus justifying that the norm cycle process has only reached the norm cascade stage.

Abstract

This article examines how the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), treated as an organization rather than a mere aggregate, can catalyze Global South leadership in economic development. Building on Said’s Orientalism, Santos’s Epistemologies of the South, and Global South IR (Tickner & Smith), the study uses a qualitative literature review with meta-synthesis. Findings indicate a three-tier role: (1) at the level of values, the Shanghai Spirit advances solidarity and equality, shifting development discourse from Western universals to epistemic plurality; (2) at the level of instruments, initiatives such as a development bank signal an intra-South financing ecology less dependent on conditionalities; and (3) at the level of norms, the coalition diffuses best practices and broadens security–development. Conceptually, the coalition functions as a decolonial “contact zone,” translating local experience into standards and enabling leadership rather than coercive dominance. Implications include governance and metrics beyond GDP; limitations include reliance on secondary sources and the need for empirical tests.

Abstract

This study examines the resistance of Umbul Gemulo residents to the construction of The Rayja Hotel in Batu City, East Java, through the lens of Karl Polanyi's concept of the "double movement" and Jürgen Habermas's notion of the "public sphere." Employing qualitative methods, including field observation, interviews with key stakeholders, and document analysis, the research identifies how market liberalization, backed by state facilitation, attempted to commodify a vital water spring, triggering a countermovement led by the Forum Masyarakat Peduli Mata Air (FMPMA). The results reveal that the community not only mobilized collective protest but also strategically reclaimed public discourse through legal channels and civic alliances. The study concludes that this resistance exemplifies a dual process: defending socio-ecological entitlements and revitalizing deliberative democracy, thereby re-embedding market activities into a framework of environmental justice and cultural continuity.

Abstract

Hunger in South Africa is a serious challenge that requires rapid and effective action to address its impacts. This research aims to explore strategies for alleviating hunger through implementing food aid programs and building food security in communities in need. The research method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach. The research results show that a combination of food aid and food security programs provides the best solution. Food aid can provide direct assistance to families in need, while food security programs aim to empower communities with the skills and resources to produce their own food. The importance of involving interested parties, including government, non-governmental organizations and the private sector, is highlighted in this research. Strong collaboration between various parties can increase the efficiency and positive impact of efforts to overcome hunger. This research makes an important contribution to understanding how best to address hunger in South Africa, providing a holistic and integrated view. It is hoped that the results of this research will serve as a guide for policy makers, humanitarian organizations and the general public in their efforts to combat hunger and improve food security in South Africa.

Abstract

The effectiveness of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) foreign aid in the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project plays a crucial role in infrastructure development in developing countries, particularly those funded by external sources such as Japan. By applying the concept of Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness and qualitative method with descriptive-analytical approach, this research focuses on the fulfillment of five principles of aid effectiveness namely ownership, alignment, harmonization, managing for results, and mutual accountability by JICA as the donor and the Government of Indonesia as the recipient. The result shows that although the foreign aid from JICA has a positive impact on infrastructure development in Indonesia, the Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP) financing scheme used creates limitations in the selection of main contractors and hampers the tendering process. Attachment to one donor limits Indonesia's flexibility to determine its development strategy. Continuous efforts and evaluation in approving aid schemes periodically are needed to ensure the effectiveness of foreign aid in funding infrastructure projects in Indonesia.
