Abstract

Alginate is rich in bioactive compounds and has been known to act as a stimulator on the innate immune system. The objective of this study is to determine polysaccharide and oligosaccharide alginate yield, that percentage inhibition with a different type of extraction, to evaluate growth performance as well as immune response by oxygen stress tolerance. Thermal heating with oven laboratory at 140oC for 4.5 hr was done to breakdown the polysaccharide into oligosaccharide. The extraction was conducted by maceration, filtration, precipitation, and centrifugation. Factorial design with two factors was implemented to 260 Zebrafish and reared in thirteen aquariums (20 fish per aquarium) for 12 days. Zebrafish was fed at different dose (4.0g; 6.0g; 8.0g.kg-1) and different type of extraction [noEDTA/noKCl; KCl; EDTA and (EDTAandKCl)]. The evaluation of radical scavenging activity was done spectrophotometrically at 515 nm. Results showed that the highest alginate yield either polysaccharide or oligosaccharide was gained from KCL treatments, percentage inhibition (82.61%), growth performance as well as tolerance of stress (P<0.05). The best growth performance was reached in oligosaccharide supplementation at 6.0g.kg-1 treatment. It can be concluded that alginate oliogosaccharide produced by thermal heating enhanced the antioxidant activity, boost the fish’s immune system, proofed by better growth performance and more tolerant to the low oxygen stress.

Abstract

The relationship between molecular structure and bioactivity was evaluated for sodium alginates obtained under different degradation treatment (raw alginates, heat-treated, and chemical-treated) from Sargassum sp. This study was conducted to identify the antioxidant activities of the degraded sodium alginate from Sargassum sp. compared to raw extract. Raw alginate as the control treatment was dried overnight at 60 °C, while heat-treated was heated raw alginate at 140oC in a laboratory oven (4.5 hours). Two chemical-treated were applied. Raw alginate added hydrogen peroxide and raw alginat with hydrogen peroxide plus ascorbic acid. This treatments were replicated three times. All the parameters were evaluated spectrophotometrically. The spectroscopy results from the degradation methods showed a new absorbance spectra pattern. The FT-IR spectrum revealed that treatment affects the structure of the alginates. Heat treated and chemical treated sodium alginates showed non significantly different on DPPH radical scavenging activity. Meanwhile, the combination of alginate and hydrogen peroxide treatment was at the lowest scavenging ability. Therefore, alginate oligosaccharides (AOS) produced by heating or adding chemical reagents could be considered as a stronger antioxidant than raw alginate, which may be applied in the industry and biomedical

Abstract

Abstract

The mangrove planting activity in Angsana Village, Angsana District, Tanah Bumbu Regency was carried out to prevent coastal abrasion and preserve the coastal ecosystem. This program was implemented as part of a community service initiative by the Universitas Lambung Mangkurat student community service program (KKN), in collaboration with the village government, local agencies, private companies, and local residents, through the planting of 300 Rhizophora apiculata seedlings in the estuarine coastal area. The activity method included direct observation at the planting site to identify the physical condition of the coast and assess land suitability for mangrove growth. The program was followed by direct planting of Rhizophora apiculata seedlings involving students and local communities as a form of active participation. The results showed an increase in community awareness and concern for the importance of mangrove ecosystems in preventing coastal abrasion. Cross-sectoral participation from academia, local government, and the community further strengthened the sustainability of the rehabilitation program. The planting activity also provided students with hands-on educational experience in applying scientific knowledge in practice. Furthermore, the developed mangrove area has the potential to serve as an educational ecotourism site that supports coastal community empowerment. Thus, this activity not only contributes to the sustainability of coastal ecosystems but also opens opportunities for environmentally oriented management focused on conservation and community welfare improvement.
