Abstract

This research reviews the phenomenon of child marriage during the pandemic, from a legal, social and health perspective. Based on data from UNICEF, Indonesia ranks eighth in the world with the number of child marriages reaching 1.4 million children. Data on child marriage from the 2018 National Socio-Economic Survey recorded that the number of child marriages in Indonesia was quite high, reaching 1,220,900 incidents. This means that about 1 in 9 women aged 20-24 get married before the age of 18. This research was conducted in Jember Regency by taking 17 representations in 9 sub-districts. This study uses a qualitative method with an observation and interview approach. From the results of the study, it was found that a small proportion of informants were legally married at Religious Affair Office because they had not met the minimum age for marriage, which was 19 years. Some informants applied for a marriage dispensation at the Religious Courts, and some falsified the date of birth by increasing the age so that it meets the minimum age for marriage. Before getting married, a small number of informants got engaged first and most of them did not go through the engagement process. Informants who are engaged are usually engaged for a relatively long time, between 10 months to a year and then get married. Child marriage is against fundamental rights and freedom of children. The recommendation from this study is the need for more intense socialization about the rules of marriage age and the dangers of early marriage, especially related to their health.

Abstract

In Acehnese history, many women held significant positions. However, the history of female Acehnese rulers is hardly written in Acehnese history, even though they give many contributions to develop Aceh as we seen now. Safiatuddin is one of very famous female ruler in Aceh and she also creates a policy that still use until now. She also was invited to other countries in Southeast Asia to give lectures and she was a queen who believe in democracy and science by not arrested the ulama who want to make coup d‟ etat. She even not put them in jail but only exiled because those ulama do not sabotage, subversive, burning, killing and other criminal things. There are others female rulers and heroines who also give their contributions in developing Aceh. However, their contributions seem forgotten in Acehnese history lesson. It becomes worst when the fatwa from Mecca saying women cannot be a leader. The New Order also contributes in making women only in domestic sphere.

Abstract

The issue of patriarchy against women is widely voiced through various media, including film. Film serves as a platform that can advocate for societal problems. Myths, social norms, and the perpetuation of patriarchy can be vocally expressed in films, an example of which is Basri and Salma in a Never Ending Comedy. The existence of films can be a way of socialization that presents and voices issues of inequality to the public. This research aims to analyze the representation of patriarchy in the film Basri and Salma in a Never Ending Comedy based on the concept of Simone de Beauvoir's existentialist feminist theory using a qualitative research method with a Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. Based on the research, representations of inequality and discrimination against women were found, particularly on the topic of the normalization reality of a wife's obligation to provide an heir to her husband through her maternal function—which, of course, points to patriarchal practices.
