Abstract

When speakers share two or more languages in common, they often switch their languages in a conversation. It is true in the classes where both teachers and students must use a certain language as the language of instructions, as happening in the English classes of Computer Science students in Indonesia. Some teachers tend to always use English all the time with some considerations, whereas others often practice code-switching in the instructional process with other reasons, as well. This study is an observation of the effect of code switching to engage students in two English for computer science classes, in which the teacher in one class used code-switching and the other did not.DOI: doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2019.030206

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate students’ views toward the use of the Think-Pair-Share teaching strategy on their oral communication skills. The primary focus of this study was to investigate the possible effect of the Think-Pair-Share teaching strategy on the students’ oral communication skills. The secondary purpose was to know the students’ view toward the application of this teaching strategy based on their experiences. Based on the purpose of the study, investigations were done by using interviews. The interviews were done with four participants consisting of the chosen students based on their experience. Zoom application was used during the interviews. Audio recordings were transcribed into text and translated into English. The keywords extracted from the transcriptions were used to determine the coding. Furthermore, the themes were reported as the study's findings and then supported by previous research. The result showed that the Think-Pair-Share teaching strategy could help the students enhance their self-confidence and could be helpful in improving their oral communication skills on condition that the students use English as the medium of discussion. Meanwhile, the findings for the secondary purpose revealed that the students found this teaching strategy was quite helpful in improving their teamwork and critical thinking skill. The students also felt that this teaching strategy offered varied activity, thus making the class become less boring. The findings reveal that the Think-Pair-Share teaching strategy needs to be implemented carefully in order to achieve its full effectiveness. As the implication, the Think-Pair-Share teaching strategy could be applied considering the advantages and the effects for the students.

Abstract

Corpus linguistics is widely recognized as a branch of linguistics that analyzes and derives insights from authentic language usage, as it emphasizes on the use of large electronic collections of texts referred to as corpora to analyses real-world language use. The rise of corpus linguistics has closely followed advancements in computer storage capacity and processing speed. This study seeks to develop a nationwide English language training program for elementary school teachers. In the initial stage, training modules was designed for these teachers. The research employed the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate), utilizing interviews and questionnaires as data collection instruments, followed by the implementation of the training modules through direct instruction. The participants of this study were 19 elementary school teachers. The findings indicate that incorporating corpus linguistics into the training significantly reduced teachers' anxiety, enhanced their fluency, and improved their overall competency.  Future research should explore strategies to better support teachers’ professional language development and enhance English instruction in elementary schools.

Abstract: Speaking Anxiety in A Foreign Language Speaking Class: The Perspectives of Students’ And A Teacher. Objectives: This study aimed at investigating students’ speaking anxiety in a foreign language speaking class, the source of the anxiety, and the strategies to reduce their anxiety, in the perspectives of the students, themselves, and the teacher. Methods: Observation and interviews were applied in this qualitative study. The observation was conducted to choose six students as the interviewees with three categories according to students’ levels of speaking ability; high, medium, and low. The chosen students and the teacher of the speaking class were, then, interviewed to answer the research questions. Findings: The interview showed that students still experienced anxiety even though they had learned English since elementary school and had joined extra English courses or competitions. Additionally, students felt anxious due to huge gap between learning at school and in university levels. Related to the cause of students’ speaking anxiety, it was from the internal factor, like shyness, fear of being laughed, or lack of confidence. Peer pressure from friends who were likely more fluent was another factor influencing students' speaking anxiety. Conclusion: The strategies to reduce students’ speaking anxiety from their view were by practicing and motivating themselves. From the teacher's perspective, the best strategy to lessen speaking anxiety were providing counselling session and used Flipgrid, a platform, to collect speaking video tasks. In addition, this study could help teachers in dealing with students’ speaking anxiety, particularly in the pandemic era. Keywords:  speaking anxiety, foreign language speaking class, students’ views, teacher’s view.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i1.202414

Abstract

The community service programme was designed and conducted in response to the need of the school partner, SMP Negeri 2 Purwosari Gunungkidul, to improve the motivation of the teachers to provide quality teaching for the low-motivated students. The programme lasted from February 2023 until November 2023 and was carried out in the form of training sessions and mentoring sessions. In total, there were four main activities in the programme: a motivation-building session intended to remind the teachers of the altruistic purposes of the profession, the writing-up of a module on how to utilise technological tools to motivate students, a training session on how to effectively use technological tools in the class instruction, and team-teaching sessions where we team-taught classes with selected three teachers using technological tools to engage students in class. Though throughout the programme there were challenges on our part and the teachers, generally the programme was a success. The programme evaluation suggested that teachers were generally satisfied with the programme and were more confident in using technology in teaching. Future similar programmes can be conducted with school partners sharing similar characteristics with those of our present school partner, to allow a higher quality of class instruction and eventually students' learning.

Abstract

This community service programme was conducted to raise awareness of the students of SMP Negeri 2 Purwosari Gunungkidul, the school partner, on the importance of pursuing higher education for their future. This programme was designed and conducted in response to the needs analysis suggesting that the students at the school had a low learning motivation and many of them did not have any plan to pursue education even to high school. The programme was conducted in the form of two consecutive motivation-building activities. The first was conducted in the form of a session with the school partner. The session aimed to provide a venue for the students to share their actual dreams and to make them realise that achieving those dreams was not an impossibility. The second activity was a campus visit where the students of SMPN 2 Purwosari visited Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana and joined fun learning sessions. It was aimed to give them a first-hand experience of the learning atmosphere at university so that they could be motivated to pursue their study even at the university level. They were also facilitated to realise the many scholarship opportunities available allowing them to study at university even if they came from financially struggling families. More such community service programmes should be conducted in other contexts bearing similar characteristics of students to allow for the younger generation to dream high and fight for it

Abstract

The community service programme was conducted in the form of a training on Basic English for teachers of SMA Bopkri 1 Yogyakarta. The training was conducted online through the Zoom platform and offline at the school. It was divided into ten sessions in the course of two months from 17 February 2022 up to 21 April 2022. Fifteen teachers participated in the training. The materials were understanding sermons, greetings and introduction, describing school facilities, doing school tours, describing school culture, hospitality, entertaining guests, doing small talks, and celebration of learning. The training was conducted in response to the need of the school to improve the English skills of the participants as the school had biweekly English sermons and the probability of having foreign guests. Generally, the training was a success and most of the participants who were adult learners and senior teachers with decades of teaching experiences demonstrated high motivation to learn despite the challenges. The use of three languages: Indonesian, Javanese, and English and the minimum use of technological tools were found to positively affect the participants’ motivation and learning in general. Flexibility in instructional process and relevance of materials were also key factors for success.
