Abstract

The fact that English has been embraced globally by most countries as a second language has prompted its adoption in various media, such as television and newspaper. As a language is adopted by a community of non-native speakers, a new variety of it tends to emerge due to the influence of the linguistic features of those non-native speakers’ arterial language. In Indonesia, where English is spoken as a second or foreign language, there has been a growing number of newspapers published in it. Along with the trend of world Englishes, this raises a question about the possibility of a new variety called Indonesian English. Even though more and more Indonesian teachers start to realize that the goal of English language teaching is no longer to imitate native speakers’ variety, there is still little research done on the topic of Indonesian English. For that reason, by collecting online data from an English language newspaper published in the country, this research identified the lexical characteristics of English variety used by educated Indonesians. It is basically a corpus-based lexical study that employed Corpus Pattern Analysis (CPA) to describe contextualized data gathered from the online newspaper. The focuses of this study were contextual information about loanwords, word meanings, word forms, and collocations, which are pertinent to the Indonesian variety of English. The findings indicated that the lexical characteristics of Indonesian English could be categorized into roughly four groups, namely: Indonesian-origin loanwords, Indonesian English lexicon resulting from semantic shifts and those from morphological shifts, as well as Indonesian English collocations. By doing so, it is expected that this research can provide a theoretical basis for English teachers in Indonesia to embrace an English-as-a-lingua-franca approach in their instructions and anticipate a new variety that might exist in the future: Indonesian English.

Abstract

Even though textbooks play an integral role in EFL teaching and learning processes, evaluation of English textbooks for vocational high schools in the Indonesian context and their relevancy to the targeted proficiency was still rare. This study identified text difficulty levels and English vocabulary profiles of a set of digital English coursebooks for vocational high schools in Indonesia. It also analyzed how text difficulty levels and vocabulary profiles correspond with the targeted proficiency level of vocational high school graduates. A corpus-informed and Lexile-based model was employed as the design of this research. Lexile framework was employed to measure text difficulty, while corpus information was utilized to determine the vocabulary profiles of the selected textbooks. Three tools were used to analyze the data quantitatively, namely Lexile Text Analyzer Professional, LancsBox, and English Vocabulary Profile in Text Inspector. This study found that the approximate text difficulty of reading passages in the coursebooks for grades 10 and 12 is slightly higher than the expected language proficiency level for vocational high school graduates. On the other hand, the approximate text difficulty of reading passages in the coursebook for grade 11 is slightly lower. However, in terms of vocabulary profiles, the three books emphasize the target vocabulary at the expected level (B1), as suggested by the Directorate of Vocational High School Development. In addition to those findings, it is important that teachers consider other factors outside the scope of this research, such as learners proficiency levels and interests or other qualitative data about the books, to determine whether the coursebooks are appropriate for their classes.

Abstract

This community service programme was conducted in the form of an English communication empowerment programme for employees of OHANA, a disability rights organisation based in Yogyakarta. The programme consisted of ten 90-minute meetings conducted from early October 2022 up to mid-November 2022. The materials of this training included self-introduction, introducing others, making small talks with a wide range of topics, as well as job descriptions and job responsibilities. The programme was conducted in response to the need for OHANA employees to make more effective communications with foreign partners concerning their jobs as advocates of the rights of women and persons with disability. Despite the low attendance rate in some of the meetings due to the tight schedules of the OHANA employees in providing services to the community, the language empowerment programme can be considered successful seen from the engagement of the attending participants and the generally positive feedback from them. Several conclusions and recommendations are stated considering the degree of success of this programme for the betterment of future similar programmes.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate how metacognitive reading strategies correlate with EFL learners’ achievement. Three types of metacognitive reading strategies were measured in this study, namely: global reading strategies, problem-solving reading strategies, and support reading strategies. The data collection was conducted with 56 participants from an ESP reading class at a private university in Yogyakarta. This study found that problem-solving reading strategies and global reading strategies correlated positively with students’ achievement, while support reading strategies correlated negatively with their achievement. However, those correlations were not statistically significant. Therefore, it indicates insufficient evidence to suggest that the same correlations also happened in the population or that the observed correlations might have occurred by chance. Despite the correlations not being statistically significant, in this research, the participants were sampled from the population with a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of 5%.In addition to the findings, this study provides teachers with an example of a framework for a needs analysis to measure their students’ metacognitive reading strategies and help them plan more informed reading instruction.

Abstract

The community service programme was conducted in the form of a training on Basic English for teachers of SMA Bopkri 1 Yogyakarta. The training was conducted online through the Zoom platform and offline at the school. It was divided into ten sessions in the course of two months from 17 February 2022 up to 21 April 2022. Fifteen teachers participated in the training. The materials were understanding sermons, greetings and introduction, describing school facilities, doing school tours, describing school culture, hospitality, entertaining guests, doing small talks, and celebration of learning. The training was conducted in response to the need of the school to improve the English skills of the participants as the school had biweekly English sermons and the probability of having foreign guests. Generally, the training was a success and most of the participants who were adult learners and senior teachers with decades of teaching experiences demonstrated high motivation to learn despite the challenges. The use of three languages: Indonesian, Javanese, and English and the minimum use of technological tools were found to positively affect the participants’ motivation and learning in general. Flexibility in instructional process and relevance of materials were also key factors for success.
