Tableau actually is one of the process drama techniques which allows the students to create a living picture using their body, gesture, and facial expression. Tableau is theoretically useful for students to be engaged in reading because it offers all reading strategies. However, there has been few available studies regarding to tableau, especially in EFL classroom context. It was then compelling for conducting the study of how students perceive of their experience in doing tableau in their classroom. The participants were 25 students in one of the EFL classroom in Indonesia. These participants were engaged in doing tableau for three-time meetings. After they experienced doing tableau in their classroom, they were asked to write a reflective journal to know their perceptions in regards to the benefits and concerns of tableau. Moreover, four participants were interview to get deeper understanding of their perception of tableau. The results from reflective journals and interviews revealed that the students perceived several benefits were gained after doing tableau, such as it helps them create sensory images, gain more vocabulary knowledge, deepen characters feeling, learn collaboratively, provide an alternative learning, and creating a fun atmosphere in the classroom. However, they also perceived several concerns about tableau, such as it takes much time, some ineffective groupworks still happens, and they also reported that they found some students misinterpreted the text in tableau.DOI: 10.24071/llt.2019.220207

Abstract

Abstract

Higher education plays a strategic role in producing superior human resources capable of facing global challenges. The success of higher education delivery is largely determined by the effectiveness of educational unit management, encompassing planning, organizing, directing, and controlling. This research, conducted using a literature review method, aimed to examine the key dimensions of higher education management, such as learning management, human resource management, financing management, and facilities and infrastructure management. The results of the study indicate that these four managerial functions are interconnected and must be synergistically integrated to achieve efficient and high-quality higher education governance. The analysis chart shows that the planning function has the highest contribution to institutional effectiveness, followed by directing, controlling, and organizing. Furthermore, the use of Management Information Systems (MIS) is a crucial instrument in integrating these functions and supporting data-driven decision-making. Therefore, an adaptive, technology-based, and responsive managerial approach to national policy is needed to drive sustainable higher education transformation. Abstract

In response to the growing need for critical literacy in adolescent English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, this study investigates how scaffolding techniques support junior high school students in navigating complex social texts and expressing critical perspectives through writing. While the concept of critical literacy is well-established, its classroom application in Indonesian EFL contexts remains limited, particularly with younger learners and genre-based instruction. This single case study employed a qualitative approach, incorporating classroom observations and three rounds of semi-structured interviews to examine how an experienced EFL teacher in a South Jakarta junior high school implemented scaffolding strategies during a biography writing project on Vincent van Gogh. The research was guided by Lewison et al.’s four dimensions of critical literacy, alongside established models of instructional scaffolding. The analysis identified four key scaffolding types: procedural scaffolding supported students in organizing content and mastering genre conventions; motivational scaffolding sustained engagement and encouraged creative risk-taking; conceptual scaffolding introduced abstract themes such as justice and identity; and metacognitive scaffolding facilitated students’ reflection on texts and their own perspectives. Among these, metacognitive scaffolding emerged as the most impactful, enabling students to examine diverse viewpoints and connect personal insights with broader sociopolitical issues. These findings underscore the importance of responsive, differentiated instruction in fostering critical engagement among adolescent EFL learners. The study contributes a pedagogically grounded model that integrates language development with reflective inquiry, offering practical implications for educators and curriculum designers aiming to cultivate social awareness and ethical reasoning in language classrooms.
