Abstract

Anthrax is an infectious disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. This disease causes a fairly high mortality rate in livestock populations that can threaten food security in a region. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent and control its spread. This study aims to examine the model of the spread of anthrax disease in a livestock population by considering indirect transmission and the use of disinfectants. The constructed model is expressed as a system of ordinary differential equations. Dynamical analysis is carried out to identify the stability properties of the disease-free equilibrium point. The results of the dynamical analysis show that the disease-free equilibrium point is conditionally stable, namely when the basic reproduction number is less than one. In addition, the results of numerical experiments show that the use of disinfectants has a significant effect on the dynamics of the spread of anthrax disease, namely the higher the rate of bacterial death due to disinfectants, the fewer cases of anthrax. This study shows that the use of disinfectants can be an effective strategy to control the spread of anthrax disease in livestock populations.

Abstract

Maleo is a large megapod found on the island of Sulawesi and surrounding islands and is an endangered species due to illegal hunting and habitat conversion. In this article, we propose a mathematical model for Maleo conservation. The model that is constructed is expressed as a system of ordinary differential equations consisting of five equations. To study the optimal strategy, we use optimal control theory. In our model there are three control parameters related to guarding Maleo nests, monitoring Maleo habitats, and transferring Maleo eggs to captivity. To measure the impact and the consequences of each intervention scheme, we determine the percentage increase in the Maleo population and the average cost-effectiveness ratio. Our results show that the most effective intervention scheme to increase Maleo populations is a combination of guarding Maleo nests, monitoring Maleo habitats, and transferring Maleo eggs to captivity. Meanwhile, the intervention scheme that has the best cost-effectiveness is the intervention scheme which is a combination of guarding Maleo nests and monitoring Maleo habitats.

Abstract

Rabies is a zoonotic disease which is spread by animals mostly carnivores. Rabies regards as tropic disease. In this article, we construct a mathematical model for rabies involving dog vaccination and dog population management. The model has two equilibrium points, namely rabies-free equilibrium point and endemic equilibrium point. We determine the effective reproduction ratio using next generation matrix. Our dynamical analysis shows that rabies-free equilibrium point is conditionally stable. A global sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate which intervention is the most crucial among the two interventions considered in the model. We use Latin hypercube sampling method to generate parameter space. To investigate the parameter sensitivity, we calculate the partial rank correlation coefficient. We provide numerical experimental results related to stability and global sensitivity analysis. Our results show that the effective reproduction ratio is more sensitive to dog population management than vaccination intervention. This suggests that dog population management intervention, such as sterilization and monitoring of dog movements significantly reduces the effective reproduction ratio compared to vaccination programs. In addition, the number of infectious dogs has a strong correlation with dog culling actions.

Abstract

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious disease that can infect all cloven hoofed animals. FMD is one of the most important infectious viral diseases in the world. This disease is responsible for international losses in livestock production and trade. In this article, we formulate a mathematical model for the spread of FMD in goat farms that considers early quarantine, vaccination, and disinfection interventions. The model constructed is expressed as a system of ordinary differential equations consisting of eight state variables. We determine the basic reproduction number using the next-generation matrix method. Our numerical simulation results show that vaccination has a very crucial role in controlling the spread of FMD and reducing the basic reproduction number. In addition, quarantine interventions for latent and infectious goats are also effective in controlling the spread of FMD. The basic reproduction number can also be suppressed by disinfection and quarantine interventions. Therefore, we recommend implementing routine vaccination, screening and disinfection programs. In addition, farmer should be given education so that they have the ability to identify goats exposed to FMDV so that quarantine can be carried out early.
