This research has purpose to reveal the characteristic of author’s figure of speech in Padusi novel by Ka’bati. The object of this research is to discover whether the figure of speech which used by the author shows his ideas and thought regarding the live of Indonesian labor in foreign country. Therefore, the approach used is stylistic. Stylistic, in this matter, merely sees the linguistic aspect and does not graze the content. The linguistic aspect is exposed using a concept set by Gorys Keraf. Method used in the research is qualitative. Out of this research can be concluded that there are several figure of speech used by the author. Those figures of speech are based on the structure of the sentences and either the sentences are direct or not. Figures of speech based on the structure of sentences are majority found as climax figure of speech. Based on the meaning directness, it divided into two, which is rhetorical and allegory. In rhetorical, the one most found is euphemism, paradox and tautology. In allegory, the ones found the most are metaphor, simile, and irony. Each figure of speech has its own different function. Those function exposed the portrait of Indonesian labor abroad.

This paper reviews historical materialization as repertoire in Hamka's Tenggelamnya Kapal van der Wijck novel. Repertoire is a concept attached to a theory of aesthetic response by Wolfgang Iser. Repetoire is a collection of knowledge owned by authors, consisting cultural elements (history, social, culture). Research method focused on aesthetic response which is about reading strategy and the interaction between text and its reader. It resulted in historical materialization in the form of background and foreground. "Paham Merah"/"Red Idealism" or PKI that appears in the text is stated as background in Tenggelamnya Kapal van der Wijck novel. Background leads reder's interpretation to understand foreground which is Zainuddin was PKI historical figure in Padang Panjang, Natar Zinuddin. It is supported by the presence of Muluk—Zainuddin's best friend—whom related to Muluk Nasution. The effect of idealism brought by them was the ups and downs of Haji Rasul's career in Sumatera Thawalib. It is also interpreted in a drama titled "Terusir" and "Kembali" by Zainuddin.

This paper discusses Marah Rusli’s Anak dan Kemenakan text with opposition concept by Julia Kristeva. Opposition is something unexchangeable and unconditional between two inharmonic, not-complementary, and unsettling groups. This paper was written to observe the opposition in Anak dan Kemenakan text. Data analysis methods used are suprasegmental and intertextuality analysis methods. It’s found that the oppositions in the text can be seen from the aspects of educational, marriage, social class, and mamak’s (uncle) and father’s role in Minangkabau’s matrilineal kinship system. All of those aspects are opposite in thought, attitude, and behavior between the old and the youth. It describes that the people of Minangkabau was starting to enter a renewal which was marked by the appearance of educational institution. Meanwhile,the renewal itself wasn’t completely accepted by the society. Therefore, the oppositions between the old and the youth became unavoidable.

Merantau Ke Deli merupakan salah satu kisah yang mengangkat persoalan antaretnik yang ada di Indonesia. Munculnya sebuah kebudayaan baru di antaranya bisa disebabkan terjadinya kontak antarbudaya. Kontak antarbudaya ini pun adakalanya diterima oleh suatu kebudayaan dan tidak jarang juga ditolak. Tulisan ini bertujuan menjawab pertanyaan mengapa sebuah budaya bisa diterima atau ditolak dalam suatu masyarakat? Untuk mengetahui hal tersebut digunakan pendekatan interkulturalisme. Pendekatan ini (interkulturalisme) dalam karya sastra menfokuskan kajiannya pada berbagai asal budaya yang berbeda dipahami, dinilai, diterima, atau dikeluarkan (ditolak) dalam satu perspektif dan tindakan budaya tertentu. Melalui tulisan ini dapat dibuktikan bahwa agama merupakan salah satu unsur kebudayaan yang dapat mempersatukan budaya yang berbeda. Selain itu, tradisi juga merupakan unsur kebudayaan yang dapat menolak dan menerima kebudayaan lain. Dari penelitian ini dapat disimpulkan bahwa perbedaan budaya antaretnik memperlihatkan keberagaman dan kekayaan budaya yang hidup di Indonesia. Perbedaan antarbudaya tidak hanya dapat memisahkan, tetapi juga dapat mempersatukan pemilik kebudayaan tersebut.

Artikel “Legenda Malin Kundang suatu Kajian Struktural Lévi-Staruss” membicarakan makna yang terkandung dalam legenda Malin Kundang. Makna legenda tersebut dilihat dari sudut pandang struktural yang digagas oleh Lévi-Staruss. Untuk menemukan makna dalam legenda tersebut penulis menggunakan metode analisis struktural yang ditawarkan Lévi-Staruss tersebut. Dalam hal ini Lévi-Staruss” mengistilahkan mytheme (miteme) dan ceriteme. Dengan metode tersebut penulis mendapatkan hasil bahwa legenda Malin Kundang tidak menggambarkan sistem Matrilineal. Hal itu terlihat dengan tidak adanya tokoh mamak dalam legenda Malin Kundang. Selain itu, juga tergambar dari tempat tinggal Malin Kundang yang memperlihatkan keluarga inti. Akan tetapi, dilihat dari nama tokoh cerita, legenda tersebut memperlihatkan ciri keminangkabauan. Kemudian, budaya merantau yang digambar dalam legenda itu merupakan salah satu konsep penting dalam budaya Minangkabau. Dengan demikian, legenda Malin Kundang merupakan cerita simbolis. Malin Kundang dikisahkan tidak mengakui ibunya. Artinya, dia menggugat keberadaan ibu dan menafikan simbol penting dalam sistem matrilineal Minangkabau dan ajaran Islam yang mengagungkan dan memuliakan ibu. Oleh karena itu, akibat perbuatannya Malin Kundang dan Kapalnya menjadi batu.

This thesis is a feminism criticism to a literature created by women. Related to the feminism criticism, the thesis is in the purpose to discover any kind of gender injustices to women in literatures. The injustices happened to women and written by women in Padusi novel are obviously different from literatures written by men. In order to discover the injustices, descriptive analysis method was used for this thesis. The injustices discovered in Padusi novel are: women subordination, negative stereotype to women, and the burden of double job. Gender injustice caused by patriarchy system in society. This patriarchy system is not only being applied by men only, but also by women. Matrilineal systemcannot prevent the injustice. If literature (novel) is considered as a reflection of society, then Padusi novel which taking Minangkabau custom as its background that profess matrilineal system has reflected it.

Larasati is a novel by Pramoedya Ananta Toer that records Indonesia’s flaming revolution at post-proclamation, not by “the great people and elders”, but a woman, Larasati. She was an ordinary villager whom became a stage artist and beautiful movie star as well as a woman who “prostitute herself to the colonialist”. This research uses post-colonialism theory and descriptive-analysis method. From the approachment used, the representation of ambivalency action from the live of the ruled ones can be seen.

This article examines the form of Minangkabau people's wisdom and concern for nature and the environment through kieh 'allusion' or figurative language found in the form of mamangan (one of the traditional Minangkabau expressions) which contains ecological wisdom. Data of this study consist of kieh expressions in the form of suggestions and prohibitions. Kieh has several kinds of proverbs called petitih, pituah, pameo and mamangan. The object of the study is the kieh which is related to ecological problems and solutions. By employing descriptive-analytic method, the study focused on the concept of environmental ethics and the view of Minangkabau natural philosophy as summarized by A.A. Navis. It is found that the Minangkabau people through mamangan kieh express wisdom and concern for the environment, including nature conservation and preservation of natural resources. This form of wisdom guides Minangkabau community in interacting with the environment. The Minangkabau natural philosophy is attentive to the sustainability of natural resources and the sustainability of the Minangkabau customary system and communal tradition, such as inheritance in the form of agricultural land, fields, forests, and else. The ecological kieh expressed the environmental ethics for the Minangkabau community.

This study reinterprets Kaba Cindua Mato (KCM) by comparing the Hikayat Tuanku Nan Muda Pagaruyung (HTNMP) from the Leiden University Library with newly discovered data from the Kitab Salasilah Raja-Raja di Minangkabau (KSRRM). Using a narrative comparative approach, the analysis focuses on four main aspects: characters, genealogy, plot structure, and conflict. Based on this comparison, the study reveals that the core narrative in both texts remains similar, particularly regarding the conflict between the Pagaruyung Kingdom and the Sungai Ngiang Kingdom. However, there are fundamental differences in character names, genealogical backgrounds, and historical chronology, especially concerning the parents of Bundo Kandung and the father of Dang Tuanku. This reinterpretation further reinforces previous researcher’s assumptions that Kaba Cindua Mato (KCM) is not merely an oral folk tale, but also a kaba composed with a strong historical foundation rooted in the era of the Minangkabau kings from the late 15th to the early 16th century CE. The findings of this study cntribute to a deeper understanding of the meaning of Kaba Cindua Mato, while also enriching knowledge of Minangkabau history.
