Abstract

Sub urban is an interaction zone between villages and cities on the outskirts of the city around the main urban center. This Sub urban area is a source of inspiration for the author in creating this work of art, because the increasing number of land clearing for commercial, industrial and residential buildings in Indonesia, especially in areas near the author’s residence, is also an inspiration for this painting. This painting is a form of the author’s concerns and hopes for the sub urban environment so that development can run in balance with environmental conservation. This painting consists of 3 canvases which are presented as one triptych canvas. Overall, it presents the sub urban environment with its elements, and also indirectly in the three canvases depicts changes in the sub urban environment. This painting uses the technique of broken color impressionism. Impressionism has the value of transition, change, momentaryness which is in line with the concept of this painting. Small streaks of color, side by side, pile up on the canvas that blend optically when viewed from afar. The colors used are also bright and contrasting colors. This work offers a new contribution in the context of contemporary painting by combining the classic style of Impressionism with modern themes about the changing sub urban environment.

Abstract

Cirebon glass painting is one of the traditional art forms that contains cultural values, distinctive techniques, and local aesthetics. In facing the challenges of modern times, the sustainability of Cirebon glass painting demands a contextual and adaptive inheritance strategy. This study aims to examine how the values, techniques, and aesthetics in the tradition of Cirebon glass painting are passed down through art education, both in the formal (schools and art colleges) and non-formal (studios and communities) realms. Using a qualitative method with an ethnographic case study approach, data was collected through observation, interviews, and visual documentation. The results show that the inheritance of glass painting does not solely depend on technical skills, but also on the internalization of cultural values and understanding of local aesthetics. Art education plays a role as a medium for intergenerational inheritance, although in its implementation it faces various challenges, such as limited curriculum integration, lack of regeneration of artists, and the need for innovative learning methods that are in accordance with the contemporary cultural context. This study recommends strengthening collaboration between educational institutions, traditional art practitioners and communities in designing a sustainable art inheritance model.

Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of environmental art in the context of Indonesian contemporary art, using the Jakarta Biennale 2015 as its main case study. This research addresses the problem of how contemporary artworks in the exhibition reflect a critique of relevant ecological and social issues. The study employs a descriptive-interpretative analysis method of selected artworks, supported by data from the exhibition catalog and related literature. The findings indicate that the environmental artworks in the Jakarta Biennale 2015 not only function as aesthetic expressions but also serve as a powerful medium for social critique and public agitation. This finding contributes to the understanding of the role of contemporary art exhibitions as critical platforms for sustainability discourse in Indonesian art.
